How to ask for direction?

Assalamu’alaikum wr.wb.
Good morning. I'm Inggit and right now I'm going to tell about how to ask for directions. Maybe
we're traveling in an english-speaking country and we lose our way, we get lost. We have a map
or GPS, but it's not helping us. So to make our situation better, we have to ask someone for
directions. Maybe we're nervous to do this, but we really shouldn't be, because asking for
directions is very easy to do.

Right now I'm going to tell some expressions that can help us ask for directions. So we can get
to where we need to go. Let’s take a look at the module, page 6.15. In the table, there are some
expressions that we can use to ask for directions.
The first is : “Excuse me, could you tell me the way to the post office, please?”
and then “Excuse me, can you show me the way to the drug store?”
“Excuse me, can you help me, please? I’m looking for a toilet.”
“Excuse me, can you help me, please? I’m trying to find Diponegoro Street.”
“Excuse me, do you know where the library is?”
“Excuse me, can you tell me where the nearest bank is?”
“Excuse me, would you like to tell me where the police station is?”

First of all, it starts with, "excuse me", that's how you get someone's attention. "excuse me or
pardon me", is the same meaning, but excuse me is like “look at me please”, but it's polite. Just
say, excuse me, or pardon me, and you get the attention. They know you want to talk to them.

After we say “excuse me”, we can ask to someone to tell the direction that we are looking for.
For example in the module, we have about seven expression. “could you tell me the way to
…?” , “can you show me the way to ….?” , “can you help me, please? I’m looking for ….”. ? I’m
looking for and “I’m trying to find ….” is the same meaning. And then we have “do you know
where …..?” , “can you tell me where…..?” and “would you like to tell me where…..?”
The post office, the drug store, a toilet, library, nearest bank, Diponegoro Street, and police
station, are the examples of place that where we need to go. Notice if there is “wh question”, in
this case is “where”, then adverb of place is followed by “to be”. To be “is” is used because the
place has pronoun “It”.

That’s all the expressions we can use for asking direction. If we remember those expressions,
and we pick which one we like more the next time we're traveling, and we get lost, so we use
one of those expressions, it will help us and make finding our way around at a foreign country
much easier than we think before.

Okay, I think that’s enough. I apologize for the lack. Thanks for your attention. If there is
question, please raise your hand. Assalamu ‘alaikum wr.wb.

1.Apa saja tips untuk menanyakan arah? (What are the tips for asking directions?)
Okay. There are five tips about how to ask for directions.
Start the conversation with a greeting is a must. Especially if you’re a newcomer in a city or
region. If you want to receive a nice explanation, begin by saying hello first. Examples:
Hello! Good Afternoon!
Excuse me, could you help me?
Then, don’t forget to finish the conversation with a “thank you” or “thank you. have a nice
day”.
The second is use polite expression. Modal verbs, such as “can, could, may, would” will help
you express yourself.
The third is build your vocabulary. You should know the basic vocabulary that can be used
when getting directions. It may be useful to remember frequently visited places too.
The fourth is learn the most commonly used prepositions and adverbs of place. Some important
prepositions to remember when getting or giving directions are between, left and right, next to,
straight ahead. And the adverbs near, nearer, nearest and close, closer, closest will be very
useful when you need to find something fast. The people who you ask usuallly use one of these
expressions.
And the last, know where your house or residence is on a map. Before you go on a trip, check
first where your house is located on a map. Find it and mark it! It is important to know where
you live.
I hope you feel satisfy with my answer. Thank you.

2.Apa itu GPS? Dan apa bedanya dengn peta? Kenapa GPS dan map mungkin tidak membantu
kita? (What is GPS? And what’s the difference with map? Why the GPS and map maybe not
helping us?)
GPS is abbreviation of Global Positioning System. Something that usually we use when we
activate location feature in our smartphone and open application such as google map. While
map, is a sheet containing a map of an area, which we usually find in travel brochures or atlas
book. You know, sometimes our smartphone is error, maybe because low memory or low
battery, so we can’t use the location feature in it. While map, it’s often not so clear, so in order
we find what place we need to go, we need someone for help. So, we should remember how to
ask for direction.
