1. Introduction

The pump is an essential component of any water distributing system such as in agricultural
irrigation networks and water storing facilities in high-rises. Proper selection of pumping
equipment that provides optimum performance requires good understanding of existing
conditions. Design restrictions, operating conditions of the water distribution system, and
required flexibility in system operation must be understood before a suitable pump and
operating parameters can be selected for a given system. Typical operating parameters that
engineer used to tweak the performance of a pump system are capacity, head, power,
efficiency, required net positive suction head, and specific speed.

2. Assignment Question

In this assignment, water is needed to be pumped up to a reservoir at an elevation difference

between the inlet and outlet of 50 m. In order to pump water, you are required to design
the piping system by identifying the relevant components which are to be placed at
appropriate positions logically. Analyse the designed piping system by identifying all the
possible losses and consider the Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH) in order to select the
most suitable impeller size which in turn leads to achieve the lowest possible operating
cost. All the assumptions made during the analyses will need to be justified accordingly.

Note :

The pump used is Etanorm 050-032-250 centrifugal pump with multiple impeller options
and the performance plot of the pump can be found in Appendix D.

Instructions to Students on Discussion, Conclusion and References

Discussion

In the Discussion section you should give an overall appraisal of the results of your work. It is here
that you will have the best opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the work and to give
a critical account of what challenges you were facing and your solution to these challenges for the
assignment completion.

Conclusion

The Conclusion is a short summary of the results of your work (about 200 words). The Conclusion
should follow naturally from the Discussion. It should give a concise statement of what has been
achieved. Anticipated application of techniques developed should be summarized very briefly. The
Conclusion should be self-contained, i.e., it should not make reference to any sections, figures, or
references in the report.

References

All references to books, papers, and other publications must be fully and correctly quoted to be
useful to the reader. Please refer to the Quick Harvard Referencing Guide document in APU
Library Homepage for guidance on referencing and citation.
