ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY

‘The Honorable Doug Ducey
Governor
State of Arizona
1700 W. Washington, 9" Floor
Phoenix, AZ 85007
Dear Governor Ducey:
[am pleased to submit a status report on the development of ASU's School for Civic and
Economie Thought and Leadership as required by the legislative intent associated with the fiscal
year 2017 general fund appropriation for the school.
| believe this report demonstrates how we have fully embraced the opportunity to add to our
academic portfolio through this new schoo] and that we have made significant progress in a short
amount of time to bring this school to life.
We have worked diligently to map a plan that will position the new school as a national center
for scholarship, teaching, civil discourse, and public comment on leadership and statesmanship,
civie and constitutional thought, and political economy. Our desire is for the school to be seen as
both an academic and public resource and a leading hub of discussion and debate.
One of the biggest differentiators for ASU’s Schoo! for Civie and Economie Thought and
Leadership is the scope of activity that will fall under the school, including the fact that it will
offer undergraduate degrees immediately followed by graduate degrees. We conducted a
thorough audit of universities that focus on similar themes only to discover that most offer
limited activity and resources in this area. None have the full array of undergraduate and
graduate degrees, research-oriented faculty, fellows and community outreach that will be located
in the School for Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership.
Already, we have made a strategic hire in Paul Carrese as the school’s new director. Director
Carrese hails from the United States Air Force Academy where he is a professor of political
science and co-founder and former director of the Academy’s great-books honors program. He
has been a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, a post-doctoral research fellow at Harvard
University, a Fulbright Teaching Fellow at University of Delhi and a research fellow in the
James Madison Program in the Politics Department at Princeton University. With Director
Carrese now on board, we will be able to move quickly to put additional faculty in place and
begin accepting students in the school by fall 2017.We appreciate the opportunity the Arizona State Legislature has presented to expand ASU"s
knowledge enterprise and engage students, scholars and the community in new ways. Please do
not hesitate to contact me at any time with any questions,
ce:
Sincerely,
Mica Cas
