Strengths of the lesson:

1. The teacher motivated the students by playing a song video focusing on: vowel
clusters of ou, ue, oi, ai, ee,ie,oa, and oo; consonant clusters of ch,sh, and th; vowel-
consonant clusters of ar, er, and or; and the velar nasal /η/. The song set a good
learning mood for the students. Some students (boys and girls alike) were singing
with the video.
2. The teacher was ready with a support activity when the first activity was quite
difficult for the students to do (spotting the given word from a jumbled set of
letters).
3. The activity done in front of the class where the students arranged in order cut
pieces of paper for them to spot a word with -oi- was intellectually challenging. It
gave the students to think critically to solve the puzzle.
4. The teacher’s voice was well modulated that it can be heard at the back of the
classroom.
5. She had lots of confidence in teaching her lesson.
6. She went around to monitor the students’ work and progress.
7. Rewards were given in words and in material form (candies).
8. She followed her lesson plan, an indication that she mastered every part of it.
9. Her activities related towards the realization of the objective of the lesson.
10. The last activity was parallel to the objective of the lesson.
11. Results of the evaluations are follows:
Group 1: Mean of 9.4 (17 items)
Group 2: Mean of 7.75 (8 items)
Group 3: Mean of 3.7 (7 items)

This means that Groups 1 and 3 are just above the passing score of 8 and 3.5 respectively,
while Group 2 prevailed. In which case, Groups 1 and 3 need to be taught again the lesson.
Areas for development:
1. The second item in the activity where students were supposed to write oi was wrong.
All the other 8 items were correct, except number 2. As it is, O_ _ cannot be filled
with oi since there is no such word as ooi.
2. The first practice activity (looking for a word with oi in the “jungle” of many
disarranged letters) was too difficult for the students. Further training on that kind of
activity should have been given first to the students before it is introduced to them
because some words need to be read backwards to be able to spot the word needed
such as liof.
3. Since this is a phonics lesson, it is a must that the teacher led the pronunciation of
the words with oi. I never heard the teacher pronounced in an orderly fashion the
words coil, foil, toy, oil, and others.
4. Bad English Good English
Read this one and matching with the picture. Read this one and match it with its
correct picture.
Go and sit in your place. Go back to your seat.
Who can matching the word? Who can match this word with…?
Next time, I want to see a pure lesson, not a review. Thank you
