Sexual Reproduction in Plants Definition:

This is considered the production of new living organisms/ offspring, involving the combination
of a male and female gamete. (1)

Five (5) Stages of Sexual Reproduction:

1. Pollination- the transfer of pollen to a stigma, ovule, flower, or plant to allow fertilization

2. Fertilization- union of male and female gametes (reproductive cells) to produce a zygote

3. Seed Formation- composed of the embryo (the result of fertilization) and tissue from the
mother plant, which also form a cone around the seed in coniferous plants like Pine and Spruce.
The new seed is formed in plant structures called fruits.

4. Fruit Formation- Once the zygote starts to grow, the ovary will begin developing into a
fruit and the ovules will begin to form seeds.. The outside wall of the ovary and pistil becomes
the skin of the fruit, or in some cases like the apple and pear, there develops a fleshy and edible
material outside the ovary wall which will become the edible part of the fruit. This fleshy
material is then covered by an outer covering that is derived from the petals, sepals and bracts.
In either case the fruit will grow as long as the plant does, but eventually it will fall from the tree
when the plant goes dormant for the winter.

5. Germination- to develop into a plant or individual, as a seed, spore, or bulb.

Parts involved in Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plant:

Stamen- The pollen producing part of a flower, usually with a slender filament supporting the anther.

Sepals- The outer parts of the flower (often green and leaf-like) that enclose a developing bud, functions
for protection in the budding plant.

Petal- The parts of a flower that are often conspicuously coloured, functions to attract insects and birds
to the flower.

Pistil- The ovule producing part of a flower. The ovary often supports a long style, topped by a stigma.
The mature ovary is a fruit, and the mature ovule is a seed.

Activity- Facilitator will place each student in groups of 4. Each group will be given the answers
to the puzzle scrambled. Students are then expected to unscramble and answer as a means of
gaining a prize. After each is completed recap is done briefly and class dismissed.
