CVE 40002 Structural Design of Low Rise Buildings~2018

SWINBURNE UNIVERSITY oF TECHNOLOGY

FACULTY OF SCIENCE, ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY

Assignment 1-Part a

The two-storey house shown in the architectural drawings (download via Blackboard) is
proposed to be built at 47 Steen Avenue Wollert Vic (a northern suburb in Melbourne). A
satellite view (from Google Maps) of the site can be seen in Figure 1. The area of the new
estate may be considered flat for the purpose of topography class determination.

Provide a brief statement (1-page maximum including diagrams or tables as required) outlining
the design procedure for the house. Outline the standards, codes and procedures that must be
used or adopted to ensure the structure of the house complies with the building act and other
building legislation for Victoria. Discuss what design loads need to be considered in the design
and make reference to Australian Standards as appropriate. Summarise what imposed loads
(with reference to AS/NZS 1170.1) the different spaces within the house will be designed for
(e.g. living, balcony, roof etc.).

Calculate the wind the loads for the house, including the wind class in accordance with AS
4055. Determine the design wind pressures for the general, edges and corners areas of the roof
(lower and upper) and the walls for both ultimate and serviceability limit states. Summarise
these design wind pressures on a marked version of the architectural drawings (similar as to
what is produced in AS 4055, Figure 3.1 and 3.2).
