From the Vicarage Fake News and Good News
We hear much about fake news, from Russia, from people who put their
gloss on stories and from film makers. In recent years there have been
stories about Mary Magdalene and her relationship to Jesus - close,
married, had a child - and legends about her going to south of France. All
fake news.
All we know for sure is that Mary Magdalene was one of a group of women
who ministered to Jesus' needs, then saw Him crucified and buried. Two
days later they found His tomb empty and she met Him in the garden, when
He told her to tell His Disciples He had risen from the dead. The empty
tomb, where no one could produce the body, meeting Jesus alive after His
crucifixion, which she and the Disciples did, and the fact that this
transformed their lives from being fearful to being preachers of this good
news, are the key evidence for Christ's Resurrection. She was central to
this - the messenger or Apostle to the Apostles. But there her story ends.
Later, on Ascension Day (10th May this year) the Disciples heard their
Lord's command to 'Go into all the world and proclaim the Gospel of Christ
Crucified and Risen'. He who had taught about God's truth and love,
forgiven penitent sinners, proclaimed care and justice to all in need, and
given hope and new life to all who believe in Him. This was the good news
they and millions of men and women down the ages then preached and
lived. Like these 3 whom the Church remembers in May.

Augustine (26th) sent from Rome in 597 as first Archbishop of Canterbury,

led a mission to convert the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity, which later united
with Cuthbert and Celtic monks from Holy Island to establish the English
Church. After centuries of growth, then decline, and despite its failures, it
still seeks to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to the people of our land
and to serve them in His Name, through its ministers and faithful people in
many churches and parishes.

John Wesley (24th) the greatest of all English evangelists, in 18th century
travelled far and wide to bring good news to people in Britain's new
industrial towns and deep rural areas like the Dales. He spoke of God's
truth and grace. His love and forgiveness, as he sought to spread
Scriptural Holiness throughout the land. He established Methodist
congregations which now share with Anglicans, Roman Catholics and
others a common Gospel and care for all in need. Good News indeed.

Josephine Butler (30th) was a Victorian social reformer, concerned for

women whose poverty forced them to live as prostitutes. She spoke firmly
3
about Christian and humanitarian values and showed them in action. This
year when we remember women who sought the vote, its good to
remember all people who have fought to change attitudes and unjust laws
and to show caring concern for the oppressed.
In today's world many men and women seek to bring good news to others -
a cheering or caring comment, a ready offer of practical help, a courageous
action, a comforting word. We can do the same, being positive and
seeking understanding and fellowship (rather than disagreement) in our
families, churches, local communities and Brexit divided nation. And
sharing good news and support in our personal relationships.
David Lickess

From "Follow me." to "Come and see.": living and sharing the
Christian faith.
We know that Jesus calls us to share our faith and bring others to know
him, but how do we start? A short 5-session course called "From "follow
me" to "come and see." looks at some of the words of Jesus himself,
considers what that means for us as followers of Jesus, and then how
these words can help us to bring others to come and see Jesus for
themselves. The course follows the form of a book club in that you will need
to read a chapter of the course book before each session.
Booking is essential as materials need to be ordered. The group will meet
at 9am in Lizzy's Tea Rooms at The Staveley Arms on Thursday mornings
and sessions will last for just over an hour. You will need to buy a tea or
coffee, but breakfast is also available if you are hungry!
Dates: Thursdays at 9am on May 17th & 24th, June 7th, 21st & 28th
The course costs £10 in total (to cover the cost of materials including a
book) and this can be paid at the first session. Please book with Revd Nick
Morgan by emailing revnjmorgan@gmail.com or calling 01765 635039 /

Together we’re stronger than the storms.
Haiti is one of the poorest counties in the world, making it much harder for

A Prestigious WI Award for Services to the Community goes to Joy

Rayden from Masham
Joy is well named in that Joy is what she brings to everyone who comes
under her care. She is an unassuming quiet hard-working, talented and
skilled individual who works tirelessly for those she meets, or when she
13
goes to the aid of those she sees in need. Joy’s whole career as a
Psychiatric Social Worker and Child Care Officer has meant she has been
immersed every day in giving help to people in their darkest hours in
practical as well as medical and spiritual ways. She was the instigator of
many projects during her time as a Voluntary Service Officer and
subsequently the Volunteer Centre Manager for Ripon Council many of
which are still going. In addition to her work role she went above and
beyond her role. Her dedication to her local community didn’t stop after she
retired, and she has managed to persuade others to help her address many
aspects of social needs locally. The support and encouragement she
received from her church spurred her on to working with other established
charitable organisations where she was able to take her ideas a step
further offering outreach for any and all groups within the community. Joy
has a strong faith and believes that the money and the people needed for
her projects will turn up, and it/they, do. She also makes sure that there are
no financial strings attached to those who benefit from any of the services
or projects. However, people have said they would like to make
contributions towards the projects, so donations are accepted from people
who are willing and able to contribute via a collection plate placed in a
discreet corner.

Mashamshire Swift Conservation Community Project Update

The Mashamshire Swift Project was set up, following the excellent evening
in the Town Hall in November last year, when Tanya and Edmund Hoare
came to talk, to try to halt the decline of this beautiful and iconic bird. A
group of interested people has been meeting regularly, and we have made
a very good start in creating new nesting sites for our endangered swifts.
We have also obtained a grant from the Parish Council to support our work.
We now have a set of nest boxes in St Mary’s Church tower in Masham,
thanks to the support from the Church Council and the generosity of the
Bell Ringers. A number of people in Masham and the surrounding villages
have put up nest boxes, or made internal nest boxes for the swifts. The
school in Masham is planning to put one up, and the Black Sheep Brewery
has installed one. There is still time to install boxes before the swifts arrive;
anyone interested should get in touch for more information.
We are planning to carry out a survey of current swift nesting sites during
the coming season; anyone wishing to be involved could contact Carla
McCowen or Janet Darby. Survey forms, with a special one for children, will
