ACTIVITY TITLE: Helicopter TEACHER: Chelsea Smith

TYPE: Physical Education Game


TARGET AUDIENCE: 1st grade
EQUIPMENT: 16 cones (4 cones, per 4 teams)

ORGANIZATION OF STUDENTS: 4 equal teams signified with large cones and a sign (North, East, South, West)

INSTRUCTIONS:
● Object: The object of this game is to help students learn their cardinal directions, along with practicing
their fundamental movements
● Organization of equipment and students: Four large cones spaced out evenly on the gym floor with
their direction attached to the cone. Two students will be the taggers and the other students will be
event split into teams via toe-to-toe method.
● Anticipatory Set:
o Who has ever seen a helicopter?
o Today we will be helicopters!
● Directions:
o Introduce game – Helicopter
o SAFETY – when I blow the whistle, turn and face me with hands on knees (PRACTICE THIS)
o Toe-to-toe in groups of 4 (mixer)
o N – tallest, E – second tallest, S – third tallest, W – remaining players
▪ What do these letters stand for?
o What do Helicopters do?
▪ Fly and today you will be helicopters flying in different directions
▪ Fly – running
▪ Glide – sliding
o When I say North fly South, they will travel to the south
o Pick two students to be taggers
▪ If tagged, you swap with the person who tagged you
● Demonstration:
o Practice round: North fly south, East Fly West, West fly North.
o Have students practice gliding to other spots (sliding).
TEACHING TIPS/MODIFICATIONS:
● Students can make helicopter noises and spread out arms like a plane
● Change North, South, East, West, into colors
SAFETY:
● Remember to watch out for your peers
● Slow down as you approach the location
● Taggers will not push, tap them on the arms or back
● Blow whistle when I need you to stop and put your hands on your knees
