Conversation with Media Specialist:

I visited Lithia Springs Public Library to complete this assignment. This library building is 34 years old.
Funding for the library comes from the Douglas County Board of Commissions and some from federal
funds. I spoke to Mrs. Katie Sellers Gordon whose title is Branch Librarian. She said she can spend
approximately $1,200 a month on children, adult fiction, and YA books and resources. She and the other
librarians base their purchases based on their patrons’ requests, audience needs, what needs to be
replaced and updated, current and popular titles, and best-selling authors. Mrs. Gordon said the library is
currently weeding and is in fact constantly weeding. She recommended the cooking book section for this
assignment because it was currently in the process of weeding along with many other sections. As a
branch of West Georgia Regional Library, these libraries have a 4-year weeding plan. Each month a
section will be weeded (except June for summer reading programs.) This library is lucky to have many
librarians and assistants, so they are able to continue to weed continually and they are able to spread the
work out. Mrs. Gordon liked this process because it gave her a guideline and path of when to weed as
well as the ability to keep the library constantly and consistently updating to meet the patrons needs. The
weeded books are then sold to the public at a very cheap cost (most around $0.10) to raise money for
programming classes for the public. These classes are offered for children and adults and are free. Books
are weeded based on their relevance, frequency of use/check-outs (at least 5 times a year), condition,
popularity, and audience/patron needs. Mrs. Gordon allowed me to take the picture of their weeding
outline below.
