Where Lesson is Taught: The Gymnasium

Grade Level: Grade 2

Unit: Manipulative

Day: Tuesday, April 9, 2018 (Day 2)

Title of Lesson: Jump Rope Tournament

Total Time Planned: 45 minutes

Engaging and Supporting Diverse Learning: Applying Principles of Universal Design for
Learning

Sociocultural Details: There are 15 boys and 13 girls in this classroom.

11 students are Caucasian, 11 students are African American, 4
students are Middle Eastern and 2 students are Hispanic.
Our 2 Hispanic students (Josephine and Samuel) are both ELL
(English Language Learners).

Students Strengths and Samuel is new to the district and is not yet fluent in English.
Needs Relevant to this Samuel will be paired up with Josephine since she is able to
Lesson: fluently speak both English and Spanish. Josephine will be able
to help Samuel understand the directions of the lesson.
Josephine and Samuel are friends and Josephine is usually
happy to work with Samuel.
Some students in the classroom are still not yet proficient in jump
rope, thus some students will not make it very far in the
tournament. We will have jump ropes off to the side of the
gymnasium for students to work on jump roping once they have
been eliminated from the tournament.

Materials and Digital Tools Needed

Equipment and Set-Up for This lesson will require 14 short jump ropes and 5 long jump
Lesson: ropes (short for the tournament, long for students to share after
being eliminated), and 14 foam dice. Students will be asked to
get their own short jump ropes and dice after getting into groups
of 2. 5 long jump ropes will be set off to the side of the
gymnasium previous to the tournament beginning.

Risk Management It is a concern that students will use the jump ropes improperly or
Concerns: trip on a jump rope during the course of this exercise. The
teachers of this lesson will be given zones of the gymnasium to
oversee to ensure that such cases are avoided.

OUTCOMES AND ASSESSMENT

State Standards Grade 2, Standard 1, Number 27:

Addressed: a. Jumps a self-turned rope consecutively forward and
backward with a mature pattern.
b. Jumps a long rope 5 times consecutively with student
turners.
Grade 2, Standard 4, Number 4:
Works independently with others in partner environment.
Grade 2, Standard 4, Number 5:
Recognizes the role of rules and etiquette in teacher-
designed physical activities.
Grade 2, Standard 4, Number 6:
a. Works independently and safely in physical education.
b. Works safely with physical education equipment.

Lesson Objectives: 1. Students will be able to properly jump with a jump rope
consecutively for the amount of times that the number is
rolled on the dice.
2. Students will be able to work independently in groups of
2, as well as being able to work independently while
practicing jump rope with peer turners after being
eliminated from the tournament.
3. Students will be able to follow rules of the tournament in
order to work safely and efficiently.
Lesson Assessments: 1. Teachers of this lesson will be watching to ensure that all
students are using correct techniques to properly use a
jump ropes (notes will be taken if a student struggles to
jump 5 times consecutively).
2. Teachers of this lesson will be watching to ensure that
students are able to work independently (notes will be
taken if a student is unable to do so).
3. Teacher of this lesson will be watching to ensure that
students are practicing safety with the gymnasium
equipment and during the activity (notes will be taken if a
student is unable to do so).

INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICE

Lesson Preview: 1. Introduction: We will begin the class by briefly reviewing

the lesson on single person jump roping that was taught
the day beforehand. We will then explain to the students
the rules of the jump rope tournament. We will also
explain to them what they will be doing after being
eliminated from the tournament (working with a long jump
rope with peer turners). We will explain that they are
expected to strictly follow the rules of the game and safety
rules.
2. Review the previous lesson: We will review the
previous lesson of jump roping by explaining to the
students the proper ways to use a jump rope. One of the
teachers of this lesson will use a jump rope to give an
example of how to proper use a jump rope.
3. In student friendly terms, identify objectives and how
students will be assessed:
a. Students will be able to properly use a jump rope.
b. Students will be able to work by themselves, in a
group of two, and off to the side of the gym with
long jump ropes.
c. Students will be able to follow all rules in order to
learn the game the right way and keep themselves
safe.
4. Hook: We will explain to students that the classroom
will be practicing jump rope skills by playing a game.
Lesson 1.Identify all learning activities and teaching cues: Differentiated
Development: a. The teachers of this lesson will start this class Instruction
session by reviewing the proper way to use a
jump rope. One of the teachers will explain how
to use the jump rope properly and
inappropriately. After this explanation, one of the
other teachers will demonstrate how to jump for
this exercise. Teachers will also demonstrate to
the students how to properly use the long jump
rope. The students will be told that they are
expected to follow proper procedure during this
activity. This should take approximately 5
minutes.
b. The teachers of this lesson will then explain to
the students how the activity will work in depth
(See step c). Students will be given an
opportunity to ask questions. This should take
approximately 5 minutes.
c. The students will then get into groups of two.
Students will then grab one jump rope and one
dice per group and spread out across the gym.
Students within each group will take turns rolling
the dice one time each. Students will then add
the numbers that they rolled together and take
turns jumping that amount of times consecutively
using the jump rope (the student who rolls the
highest number will go first). The first student to
be able to complete the consecutive jumps with a
jump rope without tripping or needing to stop will
go on to the next round. After the students have
finished the first round with their first group, they
will sit down on the floor to indicate to the
teachers that they are ready to move on. This
should take approximately 10 minutes.
d. After all of the groups are sitting, the teachers of
this lesson will ask the winners to raise their
hands and find another winner closest to them to
compete with. Students who are not moving on
will be asked to pick up the leftover jump ropes
and move on to working with long jump ropes
using peer turners. This will continue until there is
a classroom winner. This should take
approximately 20 minutes. 5 minutes will be
left for lesson closure.

2.Develop activities including checks for understanding

throughout:
The teachers of this lesson will be asking
students if they have any questions after each
round, as well as intervening during the activity to
help students if necessary. Teachers will be
readily available to answer questions if need be.

3. Indicate transitions, grouping strategies and notable

gymnasium layouts/class formations:
Students will be asked to spread out across the
gymnasium. If there is not enough room between
groups, a teacher will have groups spread out
even further to allow a proper and safe amount of
room. Transitions will be indicated by students
sitting down after completing each level of the
tournament. After every student in the classroom
is sitting, the teachers will indicate to the winners
to move onto the next level. The other students
will be asked to put away the extra jump ropes
before moving on to the long jump ropes.

Lesson Review: 1. For closure, we will congratulate the winner of the

tournament. The teachers will ask for students to
volunteer to share the highest amount of consecutive
times that they personally were able to jump using a jump
rope throughout this lesson.
2. The teachers will explain that tomorrow’s lesson will be a
focused on using the long jump ropes with peer turners.

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY: TEACHER REFLECTION

Teacher 1. Describe the portions of the lesson that worked well and why.
Reflection: 2. Describe the portions/aspects of the lesson that did not go as
planned and why.
3. Discuss what you would do differently next time to better support
your students’ learning.
4. Provide evidence from the lesson that allows you to determine
whether or not each of the outcomes for the lesson were met.
5. Describe how you will use data from the assessment portion of
your lesson to inform future lessons. For example, consider what
you would do if a significant portion of the student did not do as well
as expected in one or more of the assessments.
