Dear students, staff, and faculty, 

Thank you for the interest many of you have shown in this week’s SGO referendum on the Board of Managers’
1991 ban against considering social impacts related to the College's endowment. The referendum, calling on
the Board to ins tute a new investment policy that takes into account both long term financial results and
Swarthmore’s commitment to social responsibility, passed with 87% approval.

In the Quaker tradi on, when faced with important decisions, some friends may “feel under the weight of
concern” and share their concerns. Similarly, three faculty members have commi ed to fast under the weight
of concern, for one week at a  me, un l the Board meets in May. These professors hope you will join them in
reflec ng on the urgent stories and lived experience of the climate crisis as well as our ability to take ac on
and divest from the fossil fuel industry.

Professor Mark Wallace will begin the fast on Monday, April 23 to be followed by two addi onal faculty
members, who will be announced as they begin fas ng. Faculty, staff, and students are invited to come
together and hold study hall and office hours on the front steps of Parrish Hall on Monday from noon to 2:00
and as  me allows throughout this period. 

President Smith has promised to take the results of the referendum to the Board during its mee ng in early
May, and members of the Board will surely learn of the referendum through the grapevine and campus
publica ons. The next three weeks are thus important ones as they grapple with the need to count the cost of
carbon and support just sustainability efforts in their work as managers of the endowment.

The endowment is an important interface of the College with extrac ve industries seeking to slow the clean
energy transi on. Many of us con nue to be concerned about the way in which our investments in fossil fuel
corpora ons bu ress business plans that work at cross‐purposes with the well‐being of marginalized and
indigenous popula ons around the world and the College’s commitment to its own sustainability. We hope
the Board members with similar concerns will reach out and feel the support of the campus community to
work with their colleagues toward divestment.

Members of the staff, faculty, and student body con nue to stand in support of divestment and socially
responsible investment. Students held a previous referendum calling for divestment from fossil fuels, and
faculty passed two similar resolu ons. (The faculty white paper that accompanied the faculty resolu ons is
available at: h p://bit.ly/swa acdivestpaper). Come out and renew those calls at noon on Monday on the
front steps of Parrish Hall.
