Class: 7th/8th Grade Band (7:50-8:30)

Unit: Music Literacy

Essential Question: How does knowledge of rhythm and rhythmic patterns help a musician to
perform or compose a piece of music?

Materials:
Lost Lady Found score and parts

7:50 Students will get Instruments Out

Warm-up (Make sure percussion is participating)

• Playing: Bb scale (3/4)

• 1st time: 3 quarter notes per note with legato connected notes (vocal model)

• 2nd time: 3 quarter notes per note with staccato notes (vocal model)

• Take a look at your music: why did we do that warm-up?

8:00 Discussion of Lost Lady Found


• Ask students: what are some things just by looking at it that you already think we are
going to have to really work on with this piece?

• (Create a “word wall” on the white board of student responses)

• Possible Discussions:

• Style/Articulations
• marcatos, staccatos, legatos

• “Dance song” means we need to stay light and bouncy

• “Slow off” at the end


• Staying together (watching)

• Read through the entire piece, stopping when needed dependent upon progress

• Clap and sing struggled areas of the music as needed.

• Word wall: ask students if there is anything they would like to add after reading
through the music?

• Read through the entire piece again

8:15 Discuss Grainger


• Ask students: What are these movements from?

• Lincolnshire Posy

• A 6 movement work, very famous in the band repertoire world

• Ask students: who is the composer?

• Percy Aldridge Grainger

• He is famous for using English folk songs in his music. He spent part of his life
traveling the English country side collecting folk songs.

• Born in Australia, spent some of his life in England and the United States

• Ask students: Who is the arranger?

• Michael Sweeney

• Last time we talked about how sometimes someone will arrange a piece so
that younger bands are able to play it.

• This piece is considered a grade 2. Does anyone remember what grade the
original Lincolnshire Posy is?

8:18 Measure 34: Work on Melody (34-49)


• Focus on playing the correct rhythms and notes

• All students clap their parts

• Play if you have the melody

• If you do not have the melody clap your part

• Play if you do not have the melody

• Melody clap your part

• Play through 34-49 again

8:27 Play 34 to the end


• Remind students to watch for “Slow off” in the last few measures
