Lesson Plan

I. Title/Topic and Grade Level:

Geometry, Grade kindergarten

II. Lesson Essential Question:

How do you describe a 2-Dementional and 3-Dementional shape?

III. Standard:
Grade Kindergarten- Geometry- Identify and describe shapes (squares, circles,
triangles, rectangles, hexagons, cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres). Analyze,
compare, create, and compose shapes.

IV. Objectives and Assessments:

Learning Objectives Assessments

SWBAT identify and compare 2-D and TWBAT assess students acquired
3-D shapes. knowledge by observing students in
their centers and guiding them if help
needed.

V. Materials:
 Wooden cocktail sticks
 Marshmallows
 Printable 3-D shapes
 crayons
 Tape
 3-D shape blocks (with only cubes, cones, cylinder, sphere)
 printable flash cards
 2-D shape blocks
 computer and projector
 2-D shapes I know song
 3-D shapes I know song
 2-D and 3-D shape sort: factory game

VI. Pre-Lesson assignments and/or prior knowledge:

The teacher will use the computer and projector to show the students a 2-D and 3-D
shapes I know song/video. This will help the students learn the difference of 2-D and
3-D shapes. After indicating the song/video to the students, the teacher will then play
an online game called 2-D and 3-D shape sort: factory where students have to sort out
2-D and 3-D shapes.
VII. Lesson Beginning:
The teacher will start the lesson by replaying both the 2-D and 3-D song and talking
about the different types of activities they will be working on to learn their 2-D and 3-
D shapes.

VIII. Instructional Plan:

1. There will be three centers set up in the classroom where students will be put in
specified centers in groups of four.
2. In center one, there will be wooden cocktail sticks and marshmallows.
3. In center two, there will be cut out printable 3-D shapes, crayons, tape, and 3-D
shape blocks such as cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres.
4. In center three, there will be cut out printable “pattern block challenge” flash
cards and 2-D shape blocks.
5. For center one, students will create 2-D shapes such as squares, triangles,
rectangles, and hexagons using the cocktail sticks and marshmallows.
6. For center two, there will be 3-D shape blocks such as cubes, cones, cylinders,
and spheres set up in the center of the table, which will guide students to create
their own 3-D shapes. First, students will use their crayons to color their printable
3-D shapes. Then, students will start to fold and tape the sides and edges of their
printable shapes to create their own 3-D shape.
7. For center three, students will learn to compose shapes to create a larger shape.
For this activity, there will be several printable “pattern block challenge” flash
cards and students will use the 2-D shape blocks set on the table to compose and
create the different shapes.
8. The teacher will observe the students while in their centers and help them if
needed.
9. The teacher will also observe that the students are working on their activities,
when the teacher sees that students are done with their specified center, the
teacher will then make students rotate to a different center.
10. Once every student has completed each center activity, students will then clean up
the center which they are in.
11. Lastly, students will have a class discussion about their experience at the different
centers.

IX. Conclusion:
Students will share their experience about the different centers they worked on. After
their discussion, the teacher will show once more the 2-D and 3-D shapes I know
song/video. After the song/video the teacher will ask students according to the song,
what types of shapes are used in everyday life. Students could use the examples from
the song/video or other examples.
