Hi! From what I heard, the Papal Visit and World Youth Day closing mass at Rizal
Park/Luneta on January 15 is going to be the biggest ever and they're expecting a really,
really huge crowd.

I had the chance to visit the grounds today and check out the different areas so here's a guide
to better equip you for the mob and what to expect come Sunday.

Getting There:

For private vehicles: I'm sorry but I don't know where you can park, the immediate grounds
are off limits and I'm pretty sure that parking at the nearby H20 Hotel and Manila Hotel are
out of the question. No parking allowed on all roads leading to Luneta. You're going to have
to park somewhere in Malate/somewhere else nearby, leave your car and walk from there.

Commuting: On the way home, I was thinking that the LRT was the smartest choice but I
think they're closed. Not familiar with the stations but I'm thinking Quirino Station is the
nearest but which will be closed from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on January 18.

There's going to be Red Cross stations along the way for those who might need medical
assistance/attention.

It's hot, bring water and stay hydrated. I got a migraine from walking around the grounds and
I was there from around 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., same time as mass.

5
6
While walking around the grounds, we caught the CNN peeps doing a live report. I think it
was Anna Coren. Pretty cool cause it was all handled by just the 2 of them. Very impressive
2-man team. So professional:

There's portalets scattered around the area but didn't look like there were enough although I
don't know because delivery was ongoing while I was there. Hope they add a lot more.

7
This is the main holding ground for people attending the mass. It's extremely hot here so it's
best to wear a hat. I got really dizzy after a few minutes so...

What to Wear + Bring:

 Ground is a mixture of soil, grass and sand. Wear comfortable shoes that you're okay
with getting wet and dirty.

 Cool and loose clothing (make sure it’s still conservative)

 Hat + Sunglasses

 Fan, water, transparent bag

 Baby wipes/tissue/towel/face mist

 Umbrella

 PLASTIC BAG TO PUT YOUR TRASH IN

8
The main holding ground/viewing area is like a labyrinth, there's only a certain path you can
pass to go in and out.

9
And it's pretty far from the stage.

10
then there's a road, grassy area for tech people and finally, the holding/viewing area for the
crowd.

11
12
For those of you planning to take pictures:

Make sure to bring a zoom lens (I'm not sure if this is allowed though).

At 3:30 p.m., the sun is located right behind the stage which will make it pretty challenging to
take good photos.

And lastly, be patient and don't forget why you're here.

Pope Francis is the coolest Pope ever!!!

13
GUIDE: Tips for those going to Pope's Mass at Luneta
If you plan to attend the Concluding Mass for the Closing Liturgy of the 38th World Youth
Day to be led by Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI at Quirino Grandstand on
Sunday, here's how to go there and what you should expect.

For those with private vehicles, there will be parking areas at the SM Mall of Asia Complex,
CCP Complex, Manila Zoo, Harrison Plaza, Rizal Memorial Stadium, and other areas but
these are expected to be filled with vehicles.

Eight convergence sites along Taft Avenue, Kalaw Avenue, Katigbak Parkway and other
areas have also been identified by organizers.

For those who will commute to Luneta, the best way to reach the site is via the LRT-1.

You can alight at the LRT-1’s UN Station and walk across Kalaw Street to Luneta.

14
Gates are along M. Orosa and will be open starting at 6 a.m. Sunday.

The Luneta Mass site will be organized that will be secured by police, soldiers, as well as
Department of Health and Red Cross personnel.

Pope Francis will be on his popemobile and will go around the area to greet mass-goers.

Here are a few reminders for your safety during the mass:

15
Important highlights of the Papal Visit and World Youth Day
 Around 300 cameras on the ground will be set-up for the coverage of Papal Visit and
World Youth Day

 30 Outside broadcast Vans will be utilized

 5 satellites will be used to transmit the Pope’s visit to the Philippines and to the world.

16
 ABS-CBN, PTV, TV5, GMA, ETC, 2nd Avenue and CLTV will carry a five-day
marathon on the Pope’s Visit

 Cignal, SkyCable, and more than 820 local cable television providers agreed to create
a Pope Channel. Networks can pick-up from their signal beginning January 17, 2018.

 40 LED trucks to be deployed to strategic areas

 Over 500 broadcast technicians, anchors, reporters will cover the event

 Around 4,000 foreign correspondents are expected to cover the event

 There will be two Pope Mobiles that will be utilized. One in Metro Manila and one in
Tacloban

 40 LED trucks to be deployed to strategic areas where the Popemobile will pass

 The very first Liturgical service of the Pope at the Manila Cathedral to be beamed
worldwide will be directed by the undersigned.

Pope Francis in Luneta: Things you should know

ONGOING. Preparations continue at the Quirino Grandstand, where Pope

Francis will lead a Mass before millions of Filipino faithful. Photo by Mark Saludes/Rappler

One of the highlights of Pope Francis’ visit to the Philippines will be the open-air mass at the
Rizal Park on Sunday, January 15, his last engagement before he returns to the Vatican.

The mass, scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm on Sunday, is likely to be attended by millions of

Filipinos.

17
The last time a pope led mass in the same area in 1995, some 5 million Filipinos trooped to
the area, in one of the largest papal gatherings in the history of the Catholic Church at the
time.

Twenty years later, government officials are expecting more people but they said not
everyone will get the chance to get close to the Pope.

In a briefing on Monday, January 9, Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Ano
said only around 2 million people will be able to enter the main activity area.

Ano explained this was to prevent overcrowding in the open-aired space.

Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles earlier urged all Filipino Catholics to troop to Luneta to
take part in the Pope’s closing mass, telling them “not be afraid of the inconveniences” and
not to “mind the weather.” Villegas also heads the Catholic Bishops Conference of the
Philippines.

Inconveniences are one thing but if you’re planning to be among the millions in attendance in
Luneta, here are a few things you should know:

Come early, but not too early. The entrance to the main venue will only be opened at 6:00 am
for the 3:30 pm mass. Before that, the faithful will not be allowed to enter the Rizal Park area
since security forces need to sweep the venue first.

Camping out will be allowed in the venue in the days leading to the mass. Authorities also
appealed to the public to only start trooping to the venue the night before or Saturday,
January 14. Being in the venue earlier would result in heavier traffic along the area, Ano said.

Gates will be closed by 2:30 p.m., an hour before the mass is scheduled to begin.

Know your entrances and be prepared to walk. According to National Capital Region Police
Office Chief and Task Group Manila head Police Director Carmela Valmoria, the entrance
will be located along Maria Orosa street, roughly a kilometer away from the main venue.

At least 20 scanners will be part of the security measures for the mass, aside from the
thousands of police who will be deployed to secure the area.

Roads will be closed to vehicular traffic, a considerable distance away from Luneta. Mass-
goers can opt to be dropped off at the corner of Roxas Boulevard and Quirino Avenue, at the
corner of UN Avenue and San Marcelino, and the corner of Ayala and San Marcelino.

Vehicles will also be barred from crossing Jones, McArthur and Quezon bridges. Here's a
map you can use to pinpoint restricted areas during the Pope's mass:

Another option is for attendees to take the LRT 1 and go down at the UN Station.

So, get your walking shoes ready: you’re in for long walks.

‘Slots’ are limited. The land facing Quirino Grandstand is roughly 2 hectares and will
definitely be able to accommodate more than 5 to 10 million people.

18
During the World Youth Day in 1995, organizers of the papal mass thought of preparing a
“Michael Jackson-like entrance” for Pope John Paul II when he appeared before the crowd.

Jimmy Policarpio, chief operating officer during the 1995 World Youth Day, said organizers
considered the health of Pope John Paul II, who at that time was 74 years old and still
recovering from an accident.

“Pope John Paul II had an accident. He had a total hip replacement a year before the event, so
what we did was to make sure that all his movements would require less physical effort for
him,” Policarpio recounted.

To bring Pope John Paul II up the stage, carpenters cut a rectangular hole on the floor of the
Quirino Grandstand, just enough for the Holy Father to pass through. A seesaw elevator was
used to raise the pope. The stage floor opened up and out came Pope John Paul II.

“I got this idea when I watched the Michael Jackson concert in Russia,” Policarpio said.

The Mass, which will be concelebrated by 600,000 priests and 5,500 archbishops, bishops
and cardinals, will be in English while the intercession will be in same language.

Xavier Alpasa, one of the Emcees of World Youth Day 1995 would be used in time for the
2023 world youth day celebrations here.

To accompany the choir is a 300-piece orchestra. “There will be 60 musicians from the
Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Manila Symphony Orchestra, ABS-CBN Philharmonic
Orchestra and the UST Symphony Orchestra, plus a 60-member kids and youth orchestra.

“It would have been simpler to get choirs that have been performing together and one full
orchestra to accompany the choir and congregation,” but the multiple lineup “is symbolic—it
attempts to be inclusive and representative of as many parishes and institutions,” Francisco
said.

The congregation need not worry about getting lost in translation. “Though multilingual, the
refrains are quite simple,” Francisco said. “My rule of thumb is that the congregation should
be able to pick up the tune after hearing the melody once.”

20
While the Cebu-Sandiego Dance Company will be performing the Aliwan dance at the
Quirino Grandstand in Manila to welcome the visiting pope, the award-winning dance troupe
will not skip on dancing during the Sinulog grand parade on Sunday.

Val Sandiego, choreographer and owner of the dance company, said they will make it a point
that they can perform on the feast day, which has been a family tradition since its inception.

Sandiego said that when they were informed by the organizers, one of the problems that they
have to come up was the number of dancers because the activity falls on the same date.

“Among gitunga ang among dancers. Ang mosayaw sa Manila kay ang mga pioneer samtang
sa Sinulog, ang manayaw kay mga bag-ong dancers,” said Sandiego, who is not just a
staunch devotee of the Sto. Niño but a popular figure in Cebu for his great skills as
choreographer.

The 104 will be dancing the basic Sinulog dance steps. Sandiego along with his wife Ofelia
and their children will dance for the Pope. “Kay moadto man mi sa Manila, usa sa among
gihuna-huna as to who will be the lead dancer for the Sinulog. Maayo na lang kay sa among
paghangyo ni governor Gwen Garcia, wala gyud nibalibad ug misanong gyud dayon,”
Sandiego shared.

The devotion to the Santo Niño (Holy Child) is the oldest and the one of the most popular in
the Philippines. When Miguel Lopez Legazpi landed on the island of Cebu in 1565, one of
his soldiers found an image of the Child Jesus. It is believed to be the same statue Magellan
had given to the wife of the chieftain of the island after her baptism. The image is venerated
today in the Basilica in Cebu. For Filipino Catholics, the Holy Child represents a God who is
accessible to all and can be approached without fear. The devotion instills the virtues of
simplicity, obedience, and trust in God. At the same time, it calls for mature discipleship and

21
loving service at all. (Cf. Supplement to the Roman Sacramentary for the Dioceses in the
Philippines)

From the Apostolic Nunciature on Taft Avenue, the Pontiff arrived at Malacanang Park
aboard the Popemobile at 4:20 p.m., where he was greeted by the families of members of the
Presidential Security Group.

They waved copies of his photograph and raised rosaries and images of Jesus Christ and the
Blessed Mother for his blessing.

22
He then boarded the helicopter along with Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle
and Apostolic Nunciature to the Philippines Gabriele Giordano Caccia.

The President arrived at the back of the grandstand on board the same helicopter at exactly 4
p.m. He was accompanied by his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, and
Ambassador Lolita R. Haney.

The World Youth Day closing liturgy is thought to be the largest congregation ever
assembled at a single site for a Mass. Vatican official claimed it was the largest gathering, the
Pope has seen in his 3, 594 days, 15 hours, 5 minutes and 0 seconds or 9 years, 10 months, 1
day, 15 hours, 5 minutes’ papacy.

The pope was visibly awed by the spectacle of more than 4 to 10 million people covering the
whole Luneta Park and stretching out as far as he could see from the elevated altar at the park
grandstand. For a moment, the pope was motionless as he stared out at the mammoth crowd,
but his lips quivered.

Tens of thousands more had lined the streets on the three-kilometer route from the Apostolic
Nunciature to Luneta Park, hoping to catch a glimpse of the pope as he passed in the custom-
made “popemobile.”

Upon arrival and upon departure from the Quirino Grandstand area, Pope Francis rode his
popemobile from the Apostolic Nunciature to the Malacanang Park was forced to use a
helicopter to get to the Quirino Grandstand after an estimated eight billion people who came
to attend the final Eucharistic Celebration made the Port Area, Intramuros, Rizal Park, Paco,

23
Ermita and Malate roads impassable for land vehicles and went around the crowds – blessing,
waving, even shaking hands and kissing babies.

Cardinal Tagle, Bishop Mylo Vergara, and the Papal Visit and World Youth Day Organizing
Committee deserve the highest commendation for preparing the Luneta papal concluding
mass event.

Singing in the background was a 1,200-member choir, accompanied by a 200-piece

symphony orchestra, led by a Franciscan father at the north side.

President Duterte and his family, their predecessors and members of Cabinet and
personalities from all sectors attended the Papal Mass as announced but he kept very much in
the background, seated and waited at the Grandstand to greet the Pope before he boarded the
helicopter back to the Malacanang Park.

Vice President Leni Robredo also greeted the Pope after Duterte.

Two hundred bishops and 3,000 priests concelebrated the Papal Mass; 300,000 lay ministers
distributed communion in an orderly fashion under a white umbrella.

Cardinal Tagle, Papal Nuncio Gabriele Giordano Caccia and Archbishop of Davao Romulo
Valles delivered closing remarks to thank the Pope for visiting the country. Gaudencio
Cardinal Rosales and Cardinal Tagle read parts of mass prayers.

The Mass ended with the singing of the official song of 10th World Youth Day, “Tell the
World of His Love.”

Also, during the mass, the “Universal Message of the Youth to the World,” a manifesto
authored by the IYF delegates, was read by Michel Remery of Netherlands.

This was followed by the “Angelus Domini” led by the Pope, after which he delivered his
special message entitled “Farewell to the Family and Youth.”

In his message, the Pope prayed to the Blessed Virgin Mary to “let the flame of God's love be
rekindled in the hearts of people everywhere” and to let others “share the new life which
radiates from the cross of the Christ.”

After the message, the Pope greeted the different peoples of the world in their own languages
after which he proceeded to thank all those responsible for the success of the 38th World
Youth Day.

After the mass, President Duterte gave a 30-minute address to the people. The President kept
his speech “apolitical” in respect to the religious activity. In his speech, Duterte urged the
people to remain ardent in pursuit of true Catholic life.

Prior to the mass, Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle of Manila gave his welcome
remarks, saying that it was indeed a “beautiful day” amidst feverish chants of “Pope Francis,
we love you!”

24
His Holiness Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI was forced to use a helicopter to
get to the Quirino Grandstand after an estimated eight billion people who came to attend the
final Eucharistic Celebration made the Port Area, Rizal Park, CCP and Mall of Asia
complexes roads impassable for land vehicles, including the Popemobile.

Most of the people who attended the mass were carryovers from the overnight vigil and had
camped on streets. Others came to the vicinity as early as 4 a.m. to catch a glimpse of the
Holy Father.

Vatican sources that the crowd, estimated to be at ten million, was an attendance record,
surpassing the number who showed up during the Pope’s first visit in his native Poland in
June 1979 after he was elevated to the papacy on October 16, 1978.

They were brought back by the same helicopter to Malacanang Park, where he boarded the
Popemobile for the trip to the San Carlos Seminary in Makati City.

El Shaddai love Tagle

Bishop Jessie Eugenio Mercado, spoke briefly to the crowd on how their charismatic
movements and the Catholic hierarchy could differ on certain issues but remain united on
basic Catholic tenets.

“We may agree on our politics, but we are united in faith,” Mercado said in Pilipino in his
message just before 8:30pm.

He then quoted a Catholic saint who said: “If there is doubt, let there be differences.”

He asked the crowd to show their appreciation for the Asia's 36 archbishops--Manila

“We love you Cardinal Tagle, we love you Cardinal Rosales, we love you Cardinal Vidal, we
love you Palma,” Mercado and the El Shaddai members chorused.

The celebration ended with a cultural dance presentation show, followed by a youth concert
and a fireworks display.

25
This will be participated in by Pasigarbo sa Sugbo contingents from Minglanilla, Talisay
City, and Mandaue City. The Lumad Basakanon, who has reaped awards during the Sinulog
festivities, will also be part of the presentation.

At 10 P.M., a 30-minute firework display from four barges in Manila Bay 250 meters off the
shore, between the Manila Yacht Club and the United States Embassy set up by pyrotechnic
experts from Bocaue, Bulacan for P120, 000 lit the night sky and lasted an hour and was met
with a roar of applause by people at the parade grounds.

‘Hope’

The Pope called the world’s youth the “hope for the future” on which will depend the year
2020 which he described as “a marvelous epoch for humanity but which also raises not a few
fears and anxieties.”

“Build your lives on the one model that will not deceive you,” he urged the youth.

“I invite you to open the Gospel and discover that Jesus Christ wants to be your friend.”

He challenged the Christian laity to do its part.

He called on “people who till the soil, factory workers, engineers, technicians, doctors, nurses
and health care personnel, teachers, men and women in the legal profession, those who serve
in public life.”

He also challenged “writers, people who work in the television, theater and cinema and the
media, artists, celebrities, musicians, sculptors and painters” to take part in the mission.

Again, addressing the family and youth, the Pope added “one specific challenge and appeal,
which involves the healing of a source of immense frustration and suffering in many families
all over the world.”

Gratitude toward parents He said: “Parents and older people sometimes feel that they have
lost contact with you, and they are upset, just as Mary and Joseph felt anguish when they
realized that Jesus had stayed behind in Jerusalem.

“Sometimes you are very critical of the world of adults, and sometimes they are very critical
of you… But always remember that you owe your life and upbringing to your parents.”

He exhorted both parents and children “to build bridges of dialogue and communication.”

People from all over the world, including a black youth clad in a G-string, presented offerings
at the Mass.

A man from the Netherlands read the manifesto of the International Youth Forum.

More than a hundred members of the Presidential Security Group were around to secure the
President and some members of his Cabinet.

26
Previously, the late Pope John Paul II’s biggest crowd was the 2 million people who turned
out on June 6, 1979 at his hometown of Krakow, Poland for his first visit to the late pope's
Polish homeland after his elevation to the Papacy on October 16, 1978.

The last state visits to the Philippines, that of Pope John Paul II on January 15, 1995, attracted
around 5 million people— “the largest papal crowd in history”—according to the Guinness
World Records.

The Mass was the climax of the Roman Catholic Church’s annual celebration of the annual
weekend feast of Santo Nino de Cebu which brought together Roman Catholics from around
the world.

There were a relative handful of representatives from the Muslim faith, Iglesia ni Cristo,
National Council of Churches in the Philippines, Council of Laity in the Philippines, Mission
of All the World Ministries and the FullGospel Businessmen's Fellowship.

The main concelebrants of the Mass were Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Tagle, Manila
Archbishop Emeritus Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, Cáceres Archbishop Rolando Joven Tria
Tirona, Cagayan de Oro Archbishop Antonio Ledesma, Cagayan de Oro Archbishop
Emeritus Jesus Tuquib, Capiz Archbishop José Advincula, Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma,
Cotabato Archbishop Orlando Cardinal Quevedo, Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles, Davao
Archbishop Emeritus Fernando Capalla, Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, Lingayen–
Dagupan Archishop Socrates Villegas, Lingayen–Dagupan Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz,
Lipa Archbishop Gilbert Garcera, Lipa Archbishop Emeritus Ramon Arguelles, Nueva
Segovia Archbishop Mario Perlata, Nueva Segovia Archbishop Emeritus Edmundo Abaya,
Nueva Segovia Archbishop Emeritus Ernesto Salgado, Ozamiz Archbishop Martin Jumoad,
Ozamiz Archbishop Emeritus Jesus Dosado, Palo Archbishop John Du, Palo Archbishop
Emeritus Pedro Dean, San Fernando Archbishop Florentino Lavarias, San Fernando
Archbishop Emeritus Paciano Aniceto, Tuguegarao Archbishop Sergio Utleg, Tuguegarao
Archbishop Emeritus Diosdado Talamayan, Zamboanga Archbishop Romulo dela Cruz,
Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Cardinal Parolin, Dean of the College of Cardinals Angelo
Cardinal Sudano, and Stanisław Cardinal Ryłko, head of the Pontifical Council for the Laity.

Hundreds and thousands of cardinals, bishops, deacons and priests also served as
concelebrants.

The concluding rites started over an hour late than slated as the gathering, estimated to
number more than five to ten million, prevented the Pope from traveling short distance from
the Apostolic Nunciature to the park grounds in his popemobile.

Instead, the Pope was brought to the Quirino Grandstand by helicopter.

The entrance hymn had to be sung before the mass began in earnest. Priest in charge of the
event enjoined the crowd to sing, to pray and even to do a “love wave” to help while away
the time and to stretch aching muscles.

So thick was the crowd that evens the base of the Rizal monument, normally off-limits to the
public, became a dais on which the people stood shoulder-to-shoulder.

27
Neither the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila nor the Vatican had prepared for such an
eventually. There, was some discussion on whether the pontiff should take a helicopter or a
boat through Manila Bay to the Luneta when the sheer size of the crowd exceeded all
expectations.

The mass of people stretched from north to south from the Manila Hotel all way down to the
Ramon Magsaysay Building on Roxas Boulevard. No blacktop was visible from as far as
huge portions of T.M. Kalaw, U.N. Avenue and Padre Faura, three major streets
perpendicular to the main road fronting the venue of the Feast of Santo Nino de Cebu event.

Scores of government officials, foreign dignitaries, sports icons, entertainment celebrities and
high society personalities attended the 3-day annual feast of Santo Nino de Cebu which was
televised live nationwide via domestic satellite on television over GMA-7, ABS-CBN 2, PTV
4, 5 (The 5 Network), ETC and 2nd Avenue and aired live on radio over Radio Mindanao
Network (RMN), GMA Radyo Bisig-Bayan AM, ABS-CBN Radyo Patrol AM and My Only
Radio FM, Catholic Media Network, Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC)’s DZRH, 90.7
Love Radio, 96.3 Easy Rock, 101.1 YES! FM and Radyo Natin FM, RPN Radyo Ronda AM
and Bureau of Broadcast Services-Radyo ng Bayan radio stations.

“To see him”

Scores of people who had been waiting for the Pope started leaving Rizal Park when they
learned he had taken a helicopter.

“Why should I stay when I won’t see him, after all?” said an elderly woman. “I just came
here to see the Pope.”

By the time the annual event started, the crowd in front of the Manila Hotel had shrunk to a
third of its original size.

More than 10 million children aged Under 1, 1 - 4, 5 - 9, 10 - 14, 15 - 19 and 20 - 24, were
reported missing while thousands suffering from intense heat and cold collapsed in the mass
camp-out at the Apostolic Nunciature, Port Area, Plaza Miranda, Rizal Park, Ermita,
Baywalk, Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex and SM Mall of Asia complex from
Friday morning to Monday noontime.

As of 5:30 p.m. yesterday, the Department of Health counted 10 million persons who were
brought to emergency medical stations at the park, Port Area District, Manila Cathedral,
Baywalk, CCP Complex and SM Mall of Asia complex.

The complaints involved dizziness, asthma, allergies and headaches, said Dr. John Layugan,
a member of the Stop Disasters, Epidemics, Accidents and Traumas for Health (Stop Death)
team.

Criselda Tungcol, 39, a WYD delegate from San Juan City, Metro Manila, was rushed to the
Polymedic General Hospital in Mandaluyong after suffering spasms at Rizal Park. She has
since been discharged.

28
Although the Pope looked very tired and lost in thought as he arrived for a Sunday evening
meeting with Asian bishops, aides said his Manila reception was just what he needed to help
get through the loss of his former active lifestyle.

“That kind of change is difficult psychologically and this trip has helped him come to peace
with himself about this new phase in his life,” the aide added.

“It has recharged his batteries.”

Crowd estimate

The WPD arrived at the crowd estimate by multiplying 610,000 square meters or 61 hectares
(the approximate area of the western portion of the park from the Quirino Grandstand to
Roxas Boulevard to Taft Avenue to Manila Bay at the back of the grandstand) by four (the
number of persons who, Razon said, could stand inside one sq.).

Three days before the event, tents of sack, plastic and umbrellas had already mushroomed in
and around the venue. The residential families from the local government units arrived in
buses, trucks, jeepneys, and other vehicles festooned. In view of the huge numbers of people
coming to the venue, the Roxas Boulevard was closed and a big number of those who came
had to stay in their vehicles, go to the rooftops of nearby buildings, or sit on the sidewalks
and simply monitor the celebration on their portable TV and radio sets.

While at least seven persons can fit into one sq., the MPD reduced the number to four, taking
into consideration that portions of Parade Avenue and the field in front of the grandstand had
numerous obstructions such as trees, vendors’ booths and muddy ground.

Added into the equation was the estimated number of people at the eastern portion of the park
from Roxas Boulevard to Taft Avenue, and those outside the park proper (on T.M. Kalaw
Street, Maria Orosa Street, Roxas Boulevard from T.M. Kalaw to Padre Faura Street,
Bonifacio Drive, Port Area District, Padre Burgos Drive and Finance Road, Jones Bridge,
MacArthur Bridge, Quezon Bridge and Ayala Bridge, United Nations Avenue, Quirino
Avenue Extension, Taft Avenue from Quirino Avenue southbound and northbound, Baywalk,
CCP Complex and SM Mall of Asia complex and ends at Baclaran, between the east end of
Aseana Avenue and west end of Andrews Avenue).

Asuncion was assisted in computing the crowd number by the police command center led by
Chief Insp. Ferdinand Ampil, head of the MPD Tactical Operations Center. The center was
based on the fourth floor of the Manila Hotel overlooking the park.

At 5 p.m. Sunday, January 15, Ampil and the command center placed the number at 10
million, which swelled, he said, shortly after the President arrived for the concluding mass of
the 38th World Youth Day.

“There were no untoward incidents, thank God,” he told reporters.

The MPD and the National Capital Regional Police Office deployed 2,500 uniformed and
plain-clothes personnel in the area.

Razon himself was posted on Katigbak Street leading to the grandstand.

29
Enlightenment

Representatives of religious organizations took turns praying for Mr. Aquino’s

enlightenment. They did not ask that he see the good of his sucess, as Manila Archbishop
Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle put it at the Jesus is Lord Church event on the occasion of its
39th anniversary celebration at the same venue on October 28 to 29, 87 days prior to the
concluding mass of Pope Francis on the third and last day of his state visit and apostolic
journey to the country yesterday and today, January 18 to 19, but for him to continue to lead
the country toward peace, unity and prosperity.

Fr. Manoling Francisco, SJ, who, event organizers had said was to have delivered a
testimonial to the President, was present.

Organizers also earlier said that the Philippine Independent Church would participate.

“Let the light of Your Face shine upon his life… so that he may see the path that you want
him to take,” said Bishop Efraim Perez of the New Hope of Life Church based in Barangay
Pinagbarilan, Bulacan.

Rev. Fr. Larry Faraon, representing the Catholic Church, went against the stand of the Manila
Archdiocese and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines as he led the prayer for
“productive interaction between the Church and the government.”

Faraon replaced fellow Dominican Rev. Fr. Sonny Ramirez in leading the prayer.

El Shaddai’s Velarde, Mr. Aquino III’s spiritual adviser, and the INC’s Samson, Jr. prayed
for an end to divisions among the people so that there could be a dialogue for the country’s
good.

“Let all political parties and religions (come together) so that this annual event may be
sucessful,” Velarde said.

“Help us find the way to harmony and peace so that we can do away with hate and fighting,”
said Samson.

Frank Rola, a leader of the Jesus Miracle Crusade (JMC), said: “For the respectable President
of our country, President Rodrigo Duterte, give him strength and physical health. Guide
him… for the progress of our country, especially in his resolve to uplift the condition of
majority of our people.”

The JMC had one of the largest contingents, coming in third in number after the El Shaddai
and the INC.

The others who led prayers were Patriarch John Florentine Teruel of the Apostolic Catholic
Church; Roger Arienda of the Federation of Christian Churches, who called the three-day
weekend gathering “a miracle”; Ruth Castro of the Cheers Prayer Fellowship; and Aleem
Mohammad Cana of the Ulama Conference of the Philippines.

Business was brisking for vendors of "street food"--fish balls, popcorn, chicken innards--and
ice cream, bottled water and soft drinks.

The event may have been held to mark the “34th Feast of Santo Nino de Cebu,” but many of
the participants were observed feasting on food and drink and engaged in card games.

“The accusations against the President are all lies. Noynoy is good. He loves the poor. He
gives them land. We came here to fight for Noynoy,” Gemma Mananglay of Tondo, Manila
told the INQUIRER.

A women’s group came in red shirts that bore the message “Mahal namin si Mayor Erap
Estrada.”

Estrada is a staunch supporter of Mr. Duterte.

Police confiscated several pro-Noynoy streamers and posters mostly brought by a group from
Mandaluyong.

Caloocan City 2nd District Rep. Edgar Erice said he had received a complaint that a resident,
supposedly an El Shaddai member, was given P10, 000 yesterday morning by a barangay
captain to mobilize people to attend the rally.

A group of Marcos loyalists who claimed to have spent Friday night at the rally site walked
in before the President arrived Sunday when they noted that they were among the groups
acknowledged.

“It’s because we’re poor and have no influence. We are not considered important here,” said
a middle-aged female loyalist before leaving.

32
‘Merienda’

Journalists covering the rally were told to register with organizers in a function room at the
Sofitel Philippine Plaza.

After listing down the reporters’ names and distributing access tags, the organizers gave them
cakes that bore the phrase “peace and unity” written in icing.

Reporters were also invited to partake of pancit canton, fresh lumpia and ensaymada before
they were sent off in air-conditioned vans to the rally site.

Nearly all parking areas of the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex and SM Mall of
Asia shopping mall and Mall of Asia Arena parking lot in Pasay City and Harrison Plaza
Shopping Center in Manila were occupied by provincial buses.

Passengers wore color codes on their collars, apparently to make their group easily
identifiable to their marshals.

On Ortigas Avenue, police observed three buses loading people supposedly bound for the
gathering site.

“It’s obviously hakot, most probably by (Rizal) Gov. (Casimiro) Ynares because he has been
vocal about his support for the President,” said a rookie cop.

The INQUIRER witnessed other “hakot” activities in Pasig City and Payatas, Quezon City.

A tricycle driver said they were offered P300 each to attend. “But even if they did not offer
P300, many drivers will still go because the President promised them land titles,” he said.

After the mass, Kris shared the photo taken prior to the ceremony.

"Picture was taken before Mass started. I really obeyed when it was announced that no
pictures please during Mass," Kris wrote.

"When I was about to take the picture PNoy said: “Instagram na naman?” I said please
pagbigyan na ko, super cute naman the 3 of them, and it's a mother's joy to take pics of her
sons. And anyway, no signal in Luneta, so late upload."

“After the Mass, when Pope Francis was waving from the Popemobile, Bimb said: "Thank
You God, this was the best experience ever.”

On Friday, January 13, Kris met the Pope for the first time during the Pontiff's Philippine
visit during a private moment. She shared the photos on Instagram.

Pope Francis in his homily highlighted the Filipinos' special relationship with Santo Niño, the
Child Jesus, asking the faithful to embrace the identity of being “God’s children.”

33
“Throughout my visit, I have listened to you sing the song: ‘We are all God’s children.’ That
is what the Santo Niño tells us. He reminds us of our deepest identity. All of us are God’s
children, members of God’s family,” said Pope Francis.

Pope Francis, in the country for a five-day visit, added that Catholics are God’s adopted
children, and in turn Jesus’ own siblings.

“Today Saint Paul has told us that in Christ we have become God’s adopted children,
brothers and sisters in Christ. This is who we are. This is our identity. We saw a beautiful
expression of this when Filipinos rallied around our brothers and sisters affected by the
typhoon,” he said, referring to super typhoon Yolanda, which leveled Central Visayas and
killed thousands on November 8, 2013.

3-hour speech

Velarde delivered a three-hour “healing message” at 5 a.m. to the El Shaddai faithful still
gathered in the park before dawn.

So effective was the President's portrayal of himself as the underdog and victim in the
ongoing debate on Charter change, that Velarde said he consoled him after Mr. Duterte’s
speech on Saturday, January.

“I told the President, don't be provoked by those who try to provoke you,” Velarde, speaking
in Pilipino, told the crowd which had grown during the night, spilling over from Roxas
Boulevard into Ermita, extending up to Maria Orosa Street, Port Area, Quiapo, Paco, Malate
in the north and Baclaran in the south.

Also, millions of residents had their opened umbrellas inverted to catch El Shaddai miracle
hankerchiefs being dropped from a helicopter

Velarde and Mr. Duterte were having dinner in the VIP Lounge at the Quirino Grandstand on
Saturday when the charismatic leader advised tolerance. Velarde is the President's spiritual
adviser.

He enjoined his followers: “Let us pray for those that oppress us,” referring both to the
President's critics and those who have questioned the El Shaddai's timing of its annual
celebration of the Feast of Santo Nino to coincide with the Sinulog Festival in Cebu.

A Catholic charismatic organization, El Shaddai is under the supervision of the Archdiocese

of Manila which Tagle heads.

Velarde, who turned in millions of votes for the President's electoral bid in 1998, 2004, 2010
and 2016 is expected to present Mr. Duterte with the funds gathered for Visayas and
Mindanao as well as to pray for the government's development initiatives in the south.

El Shaddai gatherings are usually held on Saturday afternoon through Monday morning, with
praise and worship and a Mass.

Local leaders and the environmental network Ecowaste Coalition urged devotees and visitors
to couple their devotion to the Jesus Christ our Lord Savior with respect for the environment.

34
The call came as participants leading to the annual celebration of the Feast of Santo Nino
every year since 1985.

“Combining our people’s amazing devotion to the Jesus Christ our Lord with action
respecting, nurturing and defending Mother Earth will be a powerful force of hope and
deliverance against those who trash and ruin the environment,” Tin Vergara, Zero Waste
Campaigner of the EcoWaste Coalition, said.

“If the millions of devotees who come to Rizal Park and Quiapo will simply not litter and
avoid waste in all its forms, we’ll have a feast that is pleasing to the eyes and pleasing to the
Lord,” she added.

Past celebrations in 34 years have seen truckloads of garbage collected from Rizal Park to
Port Area to Ermita to Quiapo that included cigarette butts, candy and snack wrappers, plastic
bags, cups, bottles and straws, polystyrene food containers and bamboo skewers that often
cause injuries to barefooted participants.

The Liturgical Texts and other Ritual Expressions

166
The formularies are taken from the Votive Mass “Holy Name of Jesus” and the readings from
the Proper of the Feast of Santo Niño. The readings invite us to “encounter Jesus in living out
his own compassion and mercy towards our brothers and sisters in need and poverty, in
suffering, loneliness, in hopelessness.”

Pope Francis himself said: “To meet the living God we must tenderly kiss the wounds of
Jesus in our hungry people, in the sick and in imprisoned brothers and sisters. Study,
meditation and mortification are not enough to have us encounter the living Christ. Like the
apostle, Thomas, our life will only be changed when we touch Christ’s wounds present in the
poor, the sick and the needy. The path to our encounter with Jesus is his wounds. There is no
other.”

At the beginning of the Eucharistic Prayer, children carrying lighted torches, earthenware
vessels of incense and baskets of flowers approach the altar to serve as sentinels of the
Eucharist.

You are indeed Holy, O Lord, and all you have created rightly gives you praise, for
through your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, by the power and working of the Holy Spirit,
you give life to all things and make them holy, and you never cease to gather a people
to yourself, so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be
offered to your name.

Therefore, O Lord, we humbly implore you: by the same Spirit graciously make holy
these gifts we have brought to you for consecration, that they may become the Body
and + Blood of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate these
mysteries.

For on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread, and, giving you thanks, he
said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying:

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT, FOR THIS IS MY BODY, WHICH WILL BE GIVEN
UP FOR YOU.

172
In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and, giving you thanks,
he said the blessing, and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying:

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT, FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD,
THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT, WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR
YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS. DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.

173
Ipagbunyi natin ang misteryo ng pananampalataya.

174
Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the saving Passion of your Son,
his wondrous Resurrection and Ascension into heaven, and as we look forward to his
second coming, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice.

Look, we pray, upon the oblation of your Church and, recognizing the sacrificial
Victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself, grant that we, who are
nourished by the Body and Blood of your Son and filled with his Holy Spirit, may
become one body, one spirit in Christ.

May he make of us an eternal offering to you, so that we may obtain an inheritance

with your elect, especially with the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with
blessed Joseph, her Spouse, with your blessed Apostles and glorious Martyrs and with

175
all the Saints, on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing
help.

May this Sacrifice of our reconciliation, we pray, O Lord, advance the peace and
salvation of all the world.

Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim Church on earth, with your
servant Francis our Pope and Luis Antonio our Bishop, the Order of Bishops, all the
clergy, and the entire people you have gained for your own.

All my heart subdues itself before you,
Since it all before you faints and fails.

Hearing only do we trust secure?
I believe, for God the Son has said it --
Word of Truth that ever shall endure.

On the cross was veiled your Godhead's splendor,

Here your manhood lies hidden too;
Unto both alike my faith I render,
And, as sued the contrite thief, I sue.

Though I look not on your wounds with Thomas,

You, my Lord, and you, my God, I call:
Make me more and more believe your promise,
Hope in you and love you over all.

O memorial of my Savior dying,

Living Bread, that gives life to man;
Make my soul, its life from you supplying,
Taste your sweetness, as on earth it can.

Deign, O Jesus, Pelican of heaven,

Me, a sinner, in your Blood to leave,
To a single drop of which is given
All the world from all its sin to save.

Contemplating, Lord, your hidden presence,

Grant me what I thirst for and implore,
In the revelation of your essence
To behold your glory evermore.

At the conclusion of the Eucharistic celebration, candles are lighted and the assembly sings
“Tell the World of His Love” as the Holy Father sends them to their families, communities
and workplaces to be instruments of God’s mercy and compassion.

The candles held by the faithful are lighted while the narration is read.

Readers:

In the beginning, the universe was dark and cold – and the Spirit hovered and brooded
and whispered: “Let there be life... Let there be light!”

The Word was spoken and light and life came into being! God handed the light to
human beings and they handed the light on to their children and their children handed
the light on to their children.

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; on those who lived in
shadows – on them God’s light has shone.

In the dark of a stable in the town of Bethlehem a new light was given to the world:
the one who was there in the beginning came into the world; in him was life – and the
life was the light of peoples.

186
The Word became flesh and lived among us.

In the darkest hours, just before sunrise darkness gave way to a new dawn an eternal
dawn: eternal light shone upon the world.

The light became divided and humans tried to possess it: to claim it as their own.

Yet the light was not defeated.

The light passed on to those who loved God’s Word – who translated it – and placed
it into the hands of believers.

The light passed on to those who sought to understand God’s creation –and explored
its wonders.

The light passed to those who saw the dignity of human beings and fought to bring
justice to the poor – freedom to those who were slaves.

The light waits – Who will keep the light burning in our day?

Who will take the light into the world?

Who will carry the light – if we do not?

Who will carry the light – if you do not?

Holy Father: My dear brothers and sisters, we received this light in baptism and were
entrusted to keep this light burning brightly. We vowed to spread this light when we
were confirmed. I ask you now: Keep the flame of faith alive in your hearts. Walk
always as children of the light. This is the mission of every Christian: lumina pandit,
to spread the light and to tell the world of God’s love.

Before the final blessing, let us sing the hymn to our lady who brought to us the light of the
world Jesus Christ and who was light is pass these thru.

Salve, Regina, Mater misericordiæ,

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevæ,
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
in hac lacrimarum valle.
Eia, ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos
misericordes oculos ad nos converte;
Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,
nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.
O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

At the end of the Mass, during the Angelus, Pope Francis will announce the place and date of
the next World Youth Day and delivered special farewell messages in 30 languages,
including Filipino.

“Kayo ay isinugo ni Kristo tulad ng pagsugo sa Kanya ng Ama. Salamat at

(Christ sends you even as he himself was sent. I thank you for listening to his word,
and I encourage you to become apostles of the Gospel and builders of God’s kingdom
in your groups, families, parishes, groups, and in every aspect of Filipino life. Be
strong in faith and love!)

Napupuno ka ng grasya
Ang Panginoon ay sumasaiyo
Bukod kang pinagpala sa babaeng lahat
At pinagpala naman
Ang ‘yong anak na si Hesus

Santa Maria, Ina ng Diyos

Ipanalangin mo kaming makasalanan
Ngayon at kung kami’y mamamatay
Amen.

After the mass, President Duterte gave a 30-minute address to the people. The President kept
his speech “apolitical” in respect to the religious activity. In his speech, Duterte urged the
people to remain ardent in pursuit of true Catholic life.

He said Saint John Paul II reflects the kindness of the Filipinos.

8:24 p.m. - As the choir sings Pananagutan, the Holy Father stays once again to greet as many
devotees as he can.

“We invite everyone to remain when you are as the Holy Father will go around once more to
greet us many of us possible! Let us all join in singing our final song, Pananagutan. Wala po
muna aalis!”

Viva Francisco!

Kumanta po tayong lahat!

Pananagutan

We Are All God’s Children

Official Theme Song of the 2015 Papal Visit
by Jamie Rivera

Do you see these children on the streets?

Have you walked the pavements where they sleep?
Do you feel their hand when you give them alms?
Did you ever give them bread to eat?
Have you seen their homes washed by the floods?
While a mother tightly holds her child
Do you hear the wind of the raging storm?
Can you tell them where it’s coming from?
Let us show our love and mercy
With true kindness and humility
For God loves the weak and the needy
Just like you and me
We are all God’s children
We are all the same
He is calling us by name to help the poor and lame
And learn what life is really for
It’s to know and love and serve the Lord
Stand together and let’s do our part
Hear their voices mend their broken hearts
Choose to be brave, fight for their rights
Give them back their honor and their pride
Please do not be blind
And just leave them behind
To struggle in darkness
Or give them empty promises
We are all God’s children
We are all the same
He is calling us by name to help the poor and lame
And learn what life is really for
It’s to know and love and serve the Lord
It’s to know and love and serve the Lord
It’s to know and love and serve the Lord

Yehey!
Mabuhay si Papa Francisco! (2x)

Nasa Quirino Grandstand, Rizal Park sina Mike Enriquez at Vicky Morales para
sa papal Mass. GMA Network

8:32 p.m. - That marks the end of Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI's final
public event here in the Philippines, as his convoy has left Quirino Grandstand riding a
helicopter back to Malacanang Park

221
He was brought back by the same helicopter to Malacanang Park, where he boarded the
Popemobile for the trip to the San Carlos Seminary in Makati.

At the Luneta and at least 10 shrines around the Philippines, there will be processions to be
led by images of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

3-hour speech

Velarde delivered a three-in-a-half-hour “healing message” at 5 a.m. to the El Shaddai

faithful still gathered in the park before dawn yesterday.

222
So effective was the President's portrayal of himself as the underdog and victim in the
ongoing debate on Charter change, that Velarde said he consoled him after Mr. Duterte’s
speech on Saturday, January 20.

Velarde and Mr. Duterte were having dinner in the VIP Lounge at the Quirino Grandstand on
Saturday when the charismatic leader advised tolerance. Velarde is the President's spiritual
adviser.

223
He enjoined his followers: “Let us pray for those that oppress us,” referring both to the
President's critics and those who have questioned the El Shaddai's timing of its annual
celebration of the Feast of Santo Nino to coincide with the Sinulog Festival in Cebu.

224
At the end of the gathering, it lasted the 3-in-a-half-hour Worship and Healing Rally from 5
a.m. to 8:30 a.m., the servant leader says: "God bless us all!", pagkatapos ng kantang ito,
dahil walang po muna aalis, kasi mag-tatalumpati po ang pangulo! The song was released on
August 20, 1989, exactly five years after the foundation was established.

A Catholic charismatic organization, El Shaddai is under the supervision of the Archdiocese

of Manila which Tagle heads.

Velarde, who turned in millions of votes for the President's electoral bid in 1992, 1998, 2004,
2010 and 2016 is expected to present Mr. Duterte with the funds gathered for Visayas and
Mindanao as well as to pray for the government's development initiatives in the south.

El Shaddai gatherings are usually held on Saturday afternoon through Monday morning, with
praise and worship and a Mass.

Local leaders and the environmental network Ecowaste Coalition urged devotees and visitors
to couple their devotion to the Jesus Christ with respect for the environment.

The call came as participants leading to the annual celebration of the Sinulog-Santo Nino
festival every year since 1985.

The Liturgical Furnishings
The general shape of the altar table, as seen in its elevation, takes the image of hands lifted up
in prayer and offering. The hands of the “orante” in Christian art serves as inspiration. The
top horizontal member of the table seems to float in the air lifting up the gifts of the
Eucharist.

The base of the table with its dynamic diagonal lines, is covered by “anahaw” leaf (livistona
rotundifolia) as motif. “Anahaw” is the Philippines’ national leaf. This strong leaf with round
and zig-zag edge is also used as roof material for Philippines vernacular houses. “Anahaw”
not only represents the country but also the strong and dynamic faith of its people. The leaf
seen in its half, resembles the image of a “wing”, therefore connotes “lightness” as the spirit
and its flight.

The alternating motif of cross and dove. The cross is inscribed in an orb is a powerful
Christian symbol of Christ embracing the world. It also represents the mission of the Church
to reach all the ends of the earth to spread the Gospel message. Doves are representations of
souls, the object of the Church’s mission of evangelization, the Salus animarum suprema lex.

The color copper, which is reddish-orange in color, suggests a transition metal with high
thermal and electrical property. This color is used as accent to suggest the “warmth” of the
Gospel message and the “conductibility” of faith, meaning faith as the greatest heritage of
humanity for all generations.

The lectern or ambo follows the same motif as the altar table giving it, the Liturgy of the
Word, the same weight as the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The rosette being four in number,
represents the Evangelists.

na kapatid at kababayan, ladies and gentlemen, your Holiness, I do not have to tell the you
how much your visit? as inspired the Filipino people, 108 million of us,” he said.

After the message of the President, the farewell speech prior to his departure to be followed.

Dear Filipino Friends,

256
My Pastoral Visit to the beautiful Philippines is now at an end. I wish to thank
everyone for the warmth and graciousness of the hospitality I have received from the
first moment of my arrival. In a special way I am grateful to His Excellency President
Duterte and the members of the Government for their close participation in each
stage of the visit. I cordially thank Cardinal Tagle and Archbishop Valles and all my
Brother Bishops and their collaborators for making my pilgrimage to the Church in
these Islands such a fruitful and joyful celebration of our faith in Jesus Christ.

I thank everyone who took part in the Masses and other events, those who organized
them, those who maintained order and security, those who have worked to broadcast
and televise the events, those who in any way served the needs of so many pilgrims.
May God reward each and every one, each one of you!

With particular affection I say thank you to the young people who have been the main
actors in the Thirty-Eighth World Youth Day. How can we explain or measure the
mysterious working of divine grace in so many generous young hearts? The Lord
described the Kingdom as a seed which a man sowed, and which then produced a rich
harvest. Here, the seed had already fallen on rich soil. Many people – parents,
teachers, catechists, Religious, priests – have kept watch over the seed of faith and
helped it grow. And God gives the increase. How far will it grow? How wide will it
spread from here through the immense human geography of Asia? This is the
challenge and the task which the young people of the Thirty-Eighth World Youth Day
and the whole Church in the Philippines have taken up and will carry into the year
2020.

All of this fills my heart with gratitude and joy. I will continue to have boundless hope
in the youth of the Philippines and of the world: Christ is working through them for
the new springtime of Christianity on this continent. We see the early stages of the
planting; others will rejoice in the rich harvest.

I take with me a thousand images of the Filipino people. I know your desire for
greater justice and a better life for yourselves and your children. No one can
underestimate the difficulties you face and the hard work that lies ahead. Above all,
no one should pull back from the great demand of real and effective solidarity, a new
solidarity between individuals, in families and throughout society. There has to be
progress in sharing. There has to be a renewed sense of responsibility of everyone for
everyone else; we are, each of us, our brother’s keeper. May God help you to follow
the path you have already begun: towards a continuing development that preserves
and promotes the true values of your Filipino culture!

My parting wish can be none other than the one I expressed for you when I came here
almost eight years ago: “May you always enjoy peace in your hearts and in your
homes; may justice and freedom reign throughout your land; and may your families
be faithful forever, united in joy and love! May God bless you all! God bless the
Philippines! Mabuhay!”

The Pope feels so well in the Philippines that he looks at another opportunity perhaps
to return. I don't know how?

Come early, but not too early. The entrance to the main venue will only be opened at 6 am for
the 5 pm Sunday mass for the World Youth Day. Before that, the faithful will be allowed to
enter the Rizal Park area since security forces need to sweep the venue first.

Camping out will be allowed in the venue in the days leading to the mass. Authorities also
appealed to the public to only start trooping to the venue the night before or Saturday,
January 14. Being in the venue earlier would result in heavier traffic along the area, Ano said.

Gates will be closed by 1:30 p.m., an hour before the mass is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.

Know your entrances and be prepared to walk. According to National Capital Region Police
Office Chief and Task Group Manila head Police Director Carmela Valmoria, the entrance
will be located along Maria Orosa Street, roughly a kilometer away from the main venue.

At least 20 scanners will be part of the security measures for the vigil and mass, aside from
the thousands of police who will be deployed to secure the area.

296
Roads will be closed to vehicular traffic, a considerable distance away from Luneta. Mass-
goers can opt to be dropped off at the corner of Roxas Boulevard and Quirino Avenue, at the
corner of United Nations Avenue and San Marcelino, and the corner of Ayala and San
Marcelino.
