III. Student’s Resume

Shane Catherine T. Besares is a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Biology,

Major in Microbiology at West Visayas State University. After almost year of practicing
the field of microbiology in the food industry, she decides to pursue her passion in
teaching. She is currently taking Diploma in Teaching in the same university.

Academically, she is most interested in the field of scientific research and

discovery. She views herself as teacher who will empower students not only to learn but
also to be creative, innovative and think outside the box. She considers herself as a bit
of a constructivist for she believes that learning is a discovery and refers to it as a
“picking up the pieces and creating something true or new”.

Personally, she has a passion in the field of arts, may it be by words, ink, paint or
even photography. She has been writing since she was 10 and has always joined
school publications believing that through it she can express herself and share
expression and ideas. She is more inclined in books of the genres: mystery,
supernatural and fantasy. By heart, she is a writer and an artist.

Shane Catherine has a mission that someday she will be a teacher, like her
parents, viewed not only as an educator or source of knowledge but as a small yet
critical part of a foundation that will build a learner - a learner that will someday become
a successful person.

She has a vision for students to appreciate science and look at it in the
perspective of discovery not merely memorization. With the rapid development of
technology, she noticed young people mostly get their answers online fast and easy
without fully grasping the concept of it. She seeks to help students slow down and truly
articulate what they are searching for and what they want to learn.

IV. Statement of Purpose

This portfolio was made, prepared and developed to provide and share
experiences for those who will undergo the same undertakings. The greatest value of
this practice teaching portfolio is that it serves as the mirror of the practice teacher for
their progress and achievement in their practice teaching.

This practice teaching portfolio was also prepared to expose the pre-service
teacher experiences so that she can use it in relating their theories learned inside the
classroom to become globally competitive.

Another purpose of this practice teaching portfolio is that it assess the pre-
service teacher’s learning for the preparation in future life in facing the real world of
teaching. The pre-service teacher must do always their best in imparting knowledge to
the students.

Field Study 1 focuses on Learner’s Development and Environment, the learning

environment as well as the psychological environment that may affect the students’ way
of learning. A physical environment that is conducive for learning may be the product of
physical and psychological atmosphere that creates interaction between student to
student and teacher to students, it had a great impact to teaching-learning process.

In this folio, the pre-service teacher will see that every student is unique and
each one may differ from each other. Through this she will see the importance of
identifying and considering the differences of the students, so that she may respect
them and treat them equally.

Impression:

As I visit and observe the different learning resource center, the learning
resources that were available or present were computers, textbooks, magazines,
newspapers, television, articles, DVD player, tapes and etc. All materials were properly
arranged according to their types and functions. It seems that all materials have a
proper maintenance because they were free any dust.

My Analysis

1.Did the board display design reflect the likes/interests of its target audience?
Why? Why not?
Yes, especially the students in that class, learning the subject..

2. Was the language used clear and simple for the target audience to
understand? Why? Why not?
Yes, because it intended for the students taking the subject and it is located
inside the classroom where the audience are the students taking the subject. The font
and size of the words were formal enough to be read by the target audience and the
words were also bold enough to be clearly seen. The words used were appropriate to
the level of the students where in the students who will read it can understand its
thought.

3. What do you think was the purpose of the board display? Was it effective?
Why? Why not?
The purpose of the display is inform the student the lessons they have learned
and what they will be learning. It also highlights the important parts, theories, person of
the subject. The designs it holds attention, the contents were appropriate that provide
learning information, and the boards were not merely filled with written words but also
pictures that facilitates easy understanding.

4. What suggestions can you make?

I think it will be better if the students were the ones who will stick the lessons as
the grading goes on. It will be like they will fill up the details and the displays will start at
bullets only.

My Board Display Layout

13 | Technology in the Learning Environment Besares, SCT 2018

My Reflections

1.Name at least five (5) skills that a teacher should have to be able to come up
with an effective board displays. Elaborate on why each skill is needed.
The skills that a teacher needs to create an effective board display could include:
Creative– the teacher can create ideas in a limitless way
Informative– the board display must have varied yet appropriate information
Idealistic– the teacher must think of an idea of what his/her board display would
look like and how it will work for the learning of the target audience
Artistic- the teacher must have a sense of art in order to make an attractive board
display
Resourceful– resourcefulness of a teacher may contribute to the enhancement of
the board
Minimalistic Views – Good teachers know they must minimize content to the
basic building block they want to teach. Rather than a display aimed at students who
understand the most, thebest, or the easiest, the display would be shared to include
students who understand the least, the poorest and the hardest.

2.Which of the skills do you already have? Recall your past experiences in
making board displays. How do you practice these skills?
I have a sense of idealism and resourcefulness, a little of being creative,
informative and artistic. It was high school days when I started making a board display.
The content was the whole topic that covers our third grading period. I also have a
visual skills since I wanted to get their attention with the display I am going to make.

3.Which skill do you need to develop? Reflect on how you can improve on or
acquire these skills?
I think, more on the minimalistic view and creativity. There are lots of ways or
techniques that I am not aware of or that I haven’t try yet because I don’t know how to
do it. That’s why There’s a need for me to be expose to a lot of bulletin board displays
so that I can apply it on my own bulletin board. Surfing the net could be of big help since
internet offers a wide variety of sample board displays and techniques on be effective
on it.

OBSERVATION REPORT
Date of Observation: February 6, 2018
School: Jalandoni Memorial National High School
Subject: Science
Grade/Year Level: Grade 8

The teacher knows how to get the attention of the students and they get started with a
prayer with the today’s leader. Before the class starts, the teacher asked some questions
about their previous lesson. Hence, the students answered the teachers’ questions politely.
After 5 minutes of remembering the previous lesson, the teacher started the discussion of their
new topic. The students cooperated with the teacher well.

15 | Technology in the Learning Environment Besares, SCT 2018

My Analysis

1. What do you think prompted the teacher to choose the materials/learning

resources that she/he used?
She was able to use and discussed the lesson as she wrote on the chalkboard. It
is also important that the teacher should use other materials aside from writing it down
on the chalkboard all the time.

2. What difficulties, if any, did the teacher experience? How can this be managed?
Mostly because of the students were misbehaving, some learners were not
listening and they were doing their own thing in their seats. I think the teacher should
use attractive and attention wise word problems that can interest the students.

3. Over-all, were the learning resources/materials used effectively? Why? Why not?
During this observation, somehow the material were being used effectively since
the classic chalkboard is also a very flexible tool.

16 | Technology in the Learning Environment Besares, SCT 2018

My Reflections

1. Put yourself in the place of the teacher. What would you do similarly and what
would you do differently if you will teach the same lesson to the same group of
students? Why?
If I will be the teacher of that class teaching with the same lesson, I will also
provide activities in order for students to have an opportunity to practice and apply their
learning after learning a particular knowledge, skills and attitudes. I will also use the
same teaching approach which is the inquiry approach.

I will also integrate the use of ICT tools because the concept of computer literacy
for students has been redefined (creating web pages, digitizing multimedia and the use
of social networking sites) thus I have to be aware of this trends, as my own teaching
effectiveness will depend on my understanding of these recent technological trends.
With this reason, I will create a game through the use of projector in a way that has
relation to the tropic. I will also present a power point presentation that contains my
topic for that day. Through this, the students will be attentive and participative in the
lesson and it brings convenience to my part. If the resources are not available, I will
use the chalkboard and I will provide them an interactive activity by dividing them into
groups to be followed by a short discussion, this is to facilitate the visual, auditory and
bodily or kinesthetic learners. After I implement the instruction, I will evaluate students
by providing an assessment method that is suited to the needs and interest of the
students in order for me to measure the retention of students if they have achieved
mastery, and to know if I’m going to proceed or revise the instruction.

Some learning resources in the resource center seem to be useful for my chosen
topic which was the parts and functions of respiratory system. I choose the parts and
functions of the Respiratory System as my topic and also choose several learning resources
such as chalkboard, books, power point presentation, mock ups, realia, photocopies,
pictures and visual aids. I choose those several learning resources because for my topic
because I believe that it can help me achieve my lesson objectives and to maximize
learning inside the classroom. Since my topic is about parts and functions of the Respiratory
System, so I can say that available materials are appropriate for my target year level which
is the Grade 8 .

Aside from power point presentation and visual aid I can also make flash cards, cut out
letters, and as much as possible learning resources that are made from indigenous or
recyclable materials.

My Analysis

Give at least three benefits of doing a survey of available materials before making your
own materials? Explain each.

Doing survey of available materials will give me a new idea of what to make and
how to make it. There may be unique learning materials that could be beneficial to the
lessons that I will be teaching, and by looking at the other materials can have additional
information on what to do. Through survey I can gain competence in preparing
instructional materials that are appropriate to the learning content, learning objectives
and learning styles of my students.
Doing survey can help me realize what other learning materials that I need to
make or avail in order to enhance learning in my class. Doing surveys provide several
options as well as bases for me to choose so that I can produce an appropriate and
effective materials that should be based on students characteristics or learning styles
and to my lesson objectives. It is also necessary that the materials must be applicable
to the subject matter.
Doing survey may also help me evaluate the materials I will be making is
beneficial or relevant to my lesson. The information that I have gathered during the
survey will serve as my bases or guide on how I am going to evaluate my materials. It is
important for me to evaluate the materials that I will be making so that I can produce an
improved and developed materials based from the evaluation I have made, with this
reason I can gain competence in making instructional materials that are appropriate to
the learning content, learning objectives, and learning styles of my students.

20 | Technology in the Learning Environment Besares, SCT 2018

My Reflections

1. Which of the materials did you like making the most? Why?
I like making power point presentations because it’s easy for me to put different
graphic designs, effects and transitions. I can also insert pictures, video clips and
even sounds. My purpose of selecting power point presentation among other
instructional materials is to make a clear representation and while presenting a topic,
it is necessary for me to monitor and facilitate to make sure that students stay on
task. I believe that making power point presentations aids in enhancing creativity.

2. What difficulties, if any, did you encounter in making the materials? How did you
overcome them?
I do not encounter any problems in making presentation because the power point
program has a guide on how to use it. Making a presentation using power point
program is just an easy task for me. The only thing which I consider a problem for
me is on how I’m going to deliver the content in my presentation.

3. What tips can you give teachers regarding presentation of teaching?

The teacher must assess first what are the learning styles of his/her students.
She/he must see to it that his/her materials will fit to the learning styles of the
students and must be applicable for his/her subject matter for the materials to be
effective. The chosen materials must be appropriate and can contribute to the
achievement of learning objectives. In today’s generation, it is important for a
teacher to meet the changing needs and interest of students, thus several factors
must consider such as practicality, availability, cost effectiveness and
appropriateness that is based on student’s characteristics or learning styles and
lesson objectives. The teacher may also do surveys to the available materials or can
search through the internet.

Episode 5 - PAPER WORKS (Preparing hand-outs)

Name of the FS Student: Shane Catherine T. Besares

Course: Diploma in Teaching Year & Section: A
Resource Teacher: ShielamiteDiergos Signature:
Cooperating School: Jalandoni Memorial National High School

Hand- Out Plan

Subject Matter: The Respiratory System

Grade/Year Level: Grade 9

Outline:
I. DEFINITION OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
The respiratory system is responsible for gas exchange between the
environment and the body (delivery of oxygen from the lungs to the
bloodstream and elimination of carbon dioxide from the bloodstream to the
lungs).
II. PARTS AND FUNCTION OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
A. Upper respiratory tract:
1. nose - takes air in and lets it out
2. mouth - takes air in and lets it out
B. Lower respiratory tract:
1. trachea – the tube connecting the throat to the bronchi.
2. bronchi – the trachea divides into two bronchi (tubes). One leads to the left lung,
the other to the right lung. Inside the lungs each of the bronchi divides into
smaller bronchi.
3. broncheoli - the bronchi branches off into smaller tubes called broncheoli which
end in the pulmonary alveolus.
4. pulmonary alveoli – tiny sacs (air sacs) delineated by a single-layer membrane
with blood capillaries at the other end.
5. lungs – a pair of organs found in all vertebrates.
6. diaphragm - constantly contracting and relaxing causing the chest cavity to take
in and take out oxygen.

22 | Technology in the Learning Environment Besares, SCT 2018

III. COMMON LUNG DISEASES
1. Asthma: When respiratory muscles have to work harder due to the bronchioles
constricting, which creates smaller airways It is a response to an allergen or other
irritant (such as animal fur).
2. Emphysema: When respiratory muscles have to work harder due to the fact that the
lungs have become stiff with fibers and are less elastic in nature.
3. Bronchitis: When respiratory muscles have to work harder due to inflamed, narrow
airways.
4. Pulmonary Edema: A slowing of the gas exchange due to a build up of fluid between
the alveolus and pulmonary capillary
5. Pneumonia: Bacteria or virus that affects the membrane (pleura) that surrounds the
lungs.
6. Lung Cancer: When malignant cells divide in the lung tissue, possibly invading nearby
tissues or spreading through the blood stream; oftentimes caused by smoking.
Figure 6 illustrates the presence of cancer in the lungs: the black areas are the lungs
and the white patch on the right lung is cancer.

My Analysis

1. After working on your handout, answer the following questions:

What are the good features of a handout?
A good handout must contain the important information that the students must
know about the topic or the lesson. It must be precise and can be understood by the
readers. To shorten it, the use of bullets may contribute as well as the use of diagrams,
flowcharts, etc. The content must be sequenced properly to avoid confusions.

2. Which of these features are present in the handout I made?

The handout I made was concise and comprehensive. I contained the
information in which I want my students to know. I used bullets and flowcharts to
summarize the process.

3. Which features are not present in the handout I made?

I think most of the features I enumerated are present on my handout. Only, it is
not hundred percent achieved. Say for example, clarity and organization. For me, the
handout is not very clear or it needs improvement. I tried my very best to organized it
well but it may or may not well organized if others will look at it.

Your Reflections

1. What difficulties, if any, did you encounter in making the handouts? How did you
overcome them?
To make a handout is kinda difficult. The only thing that took time and needed a
brainstorming when I made my handout is the conceptualization of the flow of the
handout and the diagrams and cluster map that I included.

2. What tips can you give teachers regarding preparation of handouts?

The teacher must identify first her objectives and the purpose in making the
handout. Then he/ she must conceptualize the flow and the content of the handout by
making an outline. The teacher must also read several references so that the handout
will be an informative tool for the students learning.

What are the good features of a slide presentation?

According to what I have learned, a good slide presentation must have, clarity:
fonts used must be clear to viewers, must possess important, details: details must be
chosen properly, possess animation (just simple)- simple animations will prevent
boredom in the class.

Which of these features are present in the slide presentation you made?

My presentation clear fonts and effects, present important facts and information,
have animations, let students interact on the presentation because they are involved in
the presentation, well-organized presentation.

Which features are not present in the slide presentation you made?

I don’t follow the 6-7 standard of making presentation. Ihad a hard time making it
simple because the lesson is complicated. Every slide is very much crowded compared
to the standard one. But even though it’s not the standard the information presented is
clear to the students and they will surely learn from it.

My Reflections

1. What difficulties, if any, did you encounter in making the slide presentations? How did
you overcome them?

For me, I didn’t really encounter difficulties since I made it simple and easy to
understand. And I didn’t use much animations on every slides and use a font that is
clear to see so the students will not suffer from understanding the content.

VI. Personal Reflections on the Portfolio

This portfolio have given me great knowledge and experience in the real world of
teaching. In teaching, our role as a teacher is not only to talk, teach, record grades and
submit it to the authority. The main purpose of teaching is focused on the learners. They
are the center of our instructions that is why we must know their nature and how they
act in school.

There are learners who are very active and seemed restless but there are also
some who are just quiet and timid. Some have unpolished talents and some have well-
exposed skills. As a future teacher, I realized that I should know each of my students. I
should know their nature. I should impose some questions like why are they acting that
way? Are their nature suits my teaching? Despite their individual differences, could they
be interested on how I will manage my instruction? Does my instruction fit my learners?
Do the smart ones be reinforced with this method? Could the slow learners understand
well if I will make this instruction? Is the environment conducive to learning? All of these
must be answered by the teacher?

There is also a great importance of being very much aware of the needs and
behaviors of our learners in order for me to plan and make my instruction effective I
should be knowledgeable enough on the possible uses of technology that may help and
benefit me and my students so that I could encourage them and so that I could catch
their field of interest. I believe that if they find learning interesting, it would continue
throughout their lives.

Other than preparing myself mentally, one of the greatest challenge I have
observed in being a teacher is being innovative, adapting and taking initiative. The
school I visited was a public high school and a lack of facilities. If they do have facilities,
those facilities are mostly phased out or not in tune with the modern needs of students. I
find myself seeing a challenge because the absences of these facilities are not the
reason on the interference of the students' learning. A teacher must to able to teach
them and to facilitate them with or without using these facilities for it should not be a
hindrance of learning. It depends on the teachers ability on how she/he will cope these
problems. Furthermore, I think a teacher should not limit their abilities in the average
level on, but they must strive hard to compete with others, because in the hands of
teacher lies the future of their learner.
