This vivid color palette is inspired by the foothills of the mountains. The bold pinks
and purples really pop and bring energy to the room. The sandy colored stones and
shades of greens and golds help to ground and balance the palette. This is a color
palette sure to energize your office environment.

WORKPLACE SUMMARY
My husband Weldon, is a Chemical Engineer and works for Chevron in the LNG department as their Consultant Process Engineer. He works on the 21st
floor of 1400 Smith. Each of the floors have around 90 employees. This particular floor has closed private offices. Most of the employees on his floor
are either engineers or have very technical jobs that require quiet places to work. His coworker, Lee is the department’s Senior Scientist.
I interviewed five people total, and the above two work for Chevron. The other three people I interviewed, work for different companies as an engineer,
a sales representative and another that works in Human Resources. The three people that work in other offices had a number of complaints such as
noise level, privacy issues, uncomfortable chairs and frequent interruptions.
With my husband’s company, there seemed to be fewer complaints. Largely due to the new office redesign, most of the common office issues were
addressed. Both my husband and his coworker reported that their work area which includes their desk, chair, monitors, keyboard and mouse are for the
most part comfortable. Also, the sit stand desks help to relieve aches and pains by changing positions. With the private offices, visual privacy is not really
a problem, however, acoustical privacy can be somewhat of an issue. They both said the walls are thin and you can hear other conversations taking place.
Some of the conference rooms and huddle rooms have better acoustical privacy. The need for additional work surface and storage seemed to be a
minimal concern. My husband has a significant number of reference books and binders he likes to have on hand. Most of the one-on-one meetings take
place in their private offices. As shown in the pervious slide, the offices have two, floor to ceiling white boards that they use everyday. There is one guest
chair in each office which makes these little meetings easier. When they need to conference with three people they both said they use the huddle rooms
that are found throughout the office interior. The complaint of interior workspaces, is poor lighting. These huddle rooms contain one small table and
three chairs, a small tv monitor and white board. Larger meetings take place in the conference rooms.
WORKPLACE SUMMARY CONTINUED…
This large energy company has many employees and strives to have the latest and greatest working environments. The 1400 Smith tower that my
husband works in, has 50 floors. Next door is a very similar tower that my husband said is much like the one he works in. Since Chevron bought the old
Enron towers, they have redesigned and gotten the latest technology and equipment for their employees. This improves their ability to get work done
quicker, with little work related injuries as possible. The Four Pillars of Ergonomics are carefully considered in the redesign of the offices. The desk chairs
are very Supportive. With the dual monitors being mounted on a swivel arm and plenty of desk top area, the Reach is easy for employees. Vision is not
usually an issue with most of the offices having outside windows that allow natural light into the offices. As for Breathing, Chevron doesn’t have air
cleaning machines that my husband is aware of, but he does have a C02 sensor in his office.
Adjacency requirements and spatial configurations seem to work well according to my husband and his coworker. For the most part the 21st floor is the
Process Engineering floor. A big part of their day is spent on the 21st floor, however, my husband said he does go to other floors frequently. He also said
it is very easy to take either the elevator or stairs to other floors to have meetings with coworkers. Sometimes he has to go over to the adjacent tower,
accessed through the sky ring. My husband said he likes working in the towers much better than a campus that is spread out. This is a much more
efficient way for employees to use their time effectively. Next door to my husband’s office is his bosses office. Most of the people he needs to
communicate with frequently are steps away. Having this particular office layout seems to be ideal and is working quite well.
I have learned a lot over the past few days interviewing these people. I have also learned how different office types as well as occupations can have a
huge impact on the employees and their working environment. With my husband’s occupation, closed offices work best. For other occupations, open
offices and co-working offices suit them better. As interior designers, observing and listening to the needs of others will help give us the information we
need to design the best possible spaces.

REFLECTING
This Commercial Design class has been very eye opening as we discovered the different types of office systems and what works best
with different industries. The research we did before the project was very insightful. Closed Offices are a traditional type of office that
are usually reserved for executives of highly technical positions. Open Office Systems are a space saving way that is also helpful in
collaboration and working hand-in-hand. These types of offices are better suited for jobs where collaboration is necessary rather than
all independent work. Co-working office spaces are the latest version of office spaces and are usually more of a relaxed environment.
There are industries that this works for but is not the perfect solution for everyone.
There are many things to consider when designing an office space and this class has systematically walked us through the process in
making decisions for such large spaces. The functionality of each space is highly important to the entire office working like it should. As
I go forward with the remainder of my degree and beyond, things I have learned in this class will definitely have an impact on my overall
approach. The individual departments have to function well be also adjacencies are highly important to the entire office functioning well
together. The overall design of the project needs to show quality in all furnishings and functionality. A well designed work space will
increase productivity for years to come. This class has been very beneficial in building my knowledge and understanding of the
workplace.
