The Mission
We believe that high quality and innovative Non Destructive
Evaluation (NDE) will make our world a safer place and will help
preserve the environment
Therefore, our mission is to bring the benefits of Simulation and NDE
Development Methodology to the NDE Community

Benefits of NDT modeling
DESIGN, OPTIMIZE AND PREPARE INSPECTION:
 Better understanding, easy variation of parameters :
a wide range of testing scenario to converge
to the optimal solution
 Better mastering of a technique and less iterations
 Less mock-ups, less trials : Save time and money

EXPERTISE:
 Reproduce field results to understand complex situations
and confirm/disprove a diagnosis

QUALIFY: To support performance demonstrations

 Study of influential parameters by simulation (and reduce mock-up tests)
 Predict the worst case scenario or compute POD curves
An element of technical justification in qualification stage

DISCUSS AND CONVINCE:

 To ease technical discussions between all “players”
(inspector, manufacturer, end user, etc.) and convince

TRAIN AND TEACH : page 5

CIVA in a few words
Software platform dedicated to
NDE modeling

Multi-technics : Developed by CEA LIST

CIVA
Main new features 2017:
 Built-in library of UT industrial probes

 Weld & Nozzle inspection simulation improved

 Arbitrary/Complex trajectories (e.g. robotic),

defined with a txt file

 Enhanced Total Focusing Method

- TFM parameters before the computation
(used to be only available in post-processing)
 Can be run in batch or parametric mode
- FMC-TFM or PWI TFM
- New TFM imaging (T-Scan with cursors, etc.)
- ATFM (stands for Adapted TFM)
- Sliding TFM along the probe scanning

 New FEM model embedded (see next slide)

page 8
CIVA
New FEM model embedded:
 In addition to the semi-analytical models a new automatic hybrid model is
included allowing to perform 2D and 3D configurations
 Useful when you are out of the validity domain of semi-analytical models (small
defect, critical angles, etc.).
 For planar & rectangular defects in this release
 Example of a parametric study with a flaw varying from 5mm to 0.1 mm

CIVA &
Implementation of metamodels in CIVA:
 When running studies with parametric variations
 A metamodel is a “model of the model” or a “smart interpolator”
 Once a first database of CIVA simulations is computed, a metamodel is built and aims at
reproducing the behaviour of results variation for all parameters & in a continuous way:
- Allow real time fine sampling along full variation range
for an extensive parametric analysis
• 1D Curve
• 2D Plots
- Allow sensivity analysis vs Sobol Indices to evaluate
relative impact of all parameters
- Leads to an easy generation of POD analysis
(Probability of Detection) and fine
data resampling in real time
Single POD curve or Array of POD curves
