Keywords
Chemical Engineering
Position of the course
The student learns to describe, calculate, design and optimize (the discussed) unit
operations and chemical reactors of the chemical industry.
The student has to be able to specify the physical-chemical principles of these unit
operations.
Contents
This course discusses mass transfer, several unit operations (solid/liquid extraction,
drying/humidifying, adsorption, ion exchange, crystallization, filters, mixers, moulders,
breakers, sieves) and chemical reactors.
The industrial equipment for these operations is discussed as well.
Initial competences
This course unit builds on certain learning outcomes of course unit Unit Operations of
Chemical Engineering.
Final competences
1  Describing, calculating and optimizing of solid/fluidum unit operations
1  (including filtration, mixing, moulding, breaking and sieving) and cooling towers.
1  Describing the mass transfer between the solid and the fluidum phase.
2  Describing, calculating, simulating and optimizing chemical reactors.
3  Mastering and using practical skills to evaluate and optimize specific solid/fluidum
1  unit operations and to determine the kinetics of chemical reactions.
4  Act with consideration to sustainable, environmental, quality and safety factors.
5  Communicate (including an objective and critical analysis) about experimental
1  results and case studies in writing and in graphics.
Conditions for credit contract
Access to this course unit via a credit contract is determined after successful competences
assessment
Conditions for exam contract
This course unit cannot be taken via an exam contract

Evaluation methods
end-of-term evaluation and continuous assessment
Examination methods in case of periodic evaluation during the first examination period
Written examination with open questions, oral examination
Examination methods in case of periodic evaluation during the second examination period
Written examination with open questions, oral examination
Examination methods in case of permanent evaluation
Written examination with open questions, participation, report
Possibilities of retake in case of permanent evaluation
examination during the second examination period is not possible

Calculation of the examination mark

Periodical evaluation: 90% of the examination mark.

Permanent evaluation for practical exercises (evaluation of the reports and behavior
and theoretical test at the end of all practical exercises): 10% of the examination mark.

Unauthorized absence for a practical exercise or the theoretical test results in an

examination mark of maximum 9/20, regardless of the marks for the periodical
evaluation.
The scores for non-periodical evaluation are transferred to the second exam period,
where only periodical evalution will take place.
