l iModel.
The Piggyback Truss option is a truss modification tool; therefore, Piggyback conditions are applied to
existing trusses already on the layout.
1. Activate the Piggyback tool from either the Truss menu or by selecting Piggyback Truss from
the Trusses toolbar.
2. At the bottom of the screen, a prompt instructs you to: Select Truss(es) to Piggyback. <Enter> After
Selection. With the mouse cursor positioned within the layout screen, click the right mouse button
to activate a popup menu and choose your selection method from listed. As you select the
trusses to piggyback, they turn red to verify their selection.
3. When you have finished selecting the desired trusses to Piggyback, click <Enter> to continue.
4. Once the Piggyback Options dialog window is opened, specify the applicable options and set-
tings. When finished selecting your options, click the button labeled OK to apply the condition
and close the dialog window, or click the button labeled Apply to apply the condition while leav-
ing the dialog window active. Clicking the Cancel button closes the dialog window with no action
taken.
5. The selected trusses now display the addition of Piggyback Cap trusses on the layout, and the
Truss List reflects two new trusses (i.e. the Base & Cap trusses) for each truss type on the lay-
out selected. The Caps on the layout are drawn ‘offset’ from the Base trusses(es) so it is easy to
tell at a glance they have been added. Each of these new trusses are now ready to be engin-
eered, either by Job Designer or manually in iDesign.
l iDesign.
1. You may either input a New Truss or select an existing truss from the Truss List.
2. Select the Piggyback option from either the Tools menu or the Edit Tools toolbar.
3. Once selected, the Piggyback Options dialog window is activated. When all your selections are
set, click the OK button to continue, or click the Cancel button to halt creation of a Piggyback
truss.
4. Assuming you clicked OK, iDesign automatically generates two trusses: the Base and the Cap,
as indicated in the Truss List.
5. Engineer and Save each of these two truss designs.

Note: The highlighted details below reflect the new additions to the Alpine {type} functionality.
l SAWFILE
This SAWFILE= section, which is 2 words without a space between ending with an equals (=) sign, is
used to create a specific sawfile.
o {type}
This first argument field is used to specify the saw type. The following list indicates the saw type
names available for use in the type argument of the SAWFILE syntax:
ALPINE is the Alpine TRS proprietary file type, and ALPINE3.0 is the Alpine TRS pro-
prietary file type with bevel information included. ALPINE0.01 & ALPINE3.0.01 are the
same, but also include the SETUPNUMBER.
ALPINE2 is also an Alpine TRS proprietary file type, and ALPINE3.02 is also an Alpine
TRS proprietary file type with bevel information included; however, the tag information is
omitted.
ALPINE2.01.&.ALPINE3.02.01.are.the.same,.but.also.include.the.SETUPNUMBER.
Therefore:
ALPINE or ALPINE3.0 TRS file includes the tag: i.e. (Truss label | Tag, Piece label,
Quantity).
ALPINE0.01 or ALPINE3.0.01 TRS file includes the tag plus any SETUPNUMBER: i.e.
(SETUPNUMBER, Truss label | Tag, Piece label, Quantity).
ALPINE2.01 or ALPINE 3.02.01 TRS file does not include the tag, however, the
SETUPNUMBER is included; i.e. (SETUPNUMBER, Truss label, Piece label,
Quantity).
Note: The ALPINE {type} that incorporates the use of setup numbers only work if you are
using: __SETUPNUMBER__, __SETUPNUMBERSONLY__, __
SETUPNUMBERSONTHELEFT__ keywords.
Note: The iModel BatchCut topic information is found in the software Help Menu labeled: Output Processor
Help. The Table of Contents path = Output Processor / Trusses Tab / Standard Output Section / BatchCut
topic.
To locate the information for the excerpt provided above, single click the Batched Cutting File Details - Batch-
cut.cfg Setup sub-chapter, scroll down and single click the Keywords bullet, scroll down and single click the
SAWFILE bullet, single click on the {type} bullet, and then single click the ALPINE, ALPINE2, ALPINE3.0,
and ALPINE3.02 bullet to view this topic information.

Note: Use of this utility in the Job Settings controls new trusses being created and saved to a job; however, if
you need to use this utility on trusses already saved to the job, the Check Relative Deflections option is located
in the Engineering Options, Misc. tab of iDesign.
The truss analysis checks for relative deflection within the truss, and if the analysis determines the rel-
ative deflection exceeds the allowable:
o A Failure Summary prompt is displayed (Figure-2) to alert you that the truss has Excessive Rel-
ative Deflection engineering problems; click the OK button to continue.
Figure-2
Figure-3
o If you continue and Save the truss, the status color of the truss is displayed red within the Truss
List (Figure-4), and a Warning note (Figure-5) is added to your Component Drawing output.

l Unselected .
The truss analysis checks for relative deflection within the truss, and if the analysis determines the rel-
ative deflection exceeds the allowable:
o A Warning prompt (Figure-6) is displayed to warn you that the truss has Excessive Relative
Deflection engineering problems; click the OK button to continue.
Figure-6
Figure-7
o When the truss is saved, the status color of the truss is displayed green within the Truss List (Fig-
ure-8). This is because the excessive relative deflection was not used as a limiting factor for the
passage of the truss design.

o Edge Wise.
When Edge Wise blocking is added to a panel, it is represented by a diagonal line within
the panel between vertical wall panel pieces (Figure-3).
Figure-3
o Flat Wise.
When Flat Wise blocking is added to either the Inside or Outside wall edge of a panel, it
is represented by a diagonal line within the thickness of the blocking located between ver-
tical wall panel pieces (Figure-4).
Figure-4
o Combination of Flat Wise & Edge Wise Blocking in same Panel.
When Flat Wise blocking is added to the wall panel edge, and Edge Wise blocking is
also added further down in the panel, both of these blocking type will be visible between
the vertical wall panel pieces (Figure-5). However, when Edge Wise blocking is added
above the Flat Wise blocking, it obstructs the view of the Flat Wise blocking and is, there-
fore, not visible in the layout top plate view.
Figure-5
Blocking applied in the Edge Wise direction is shown in the View Panel dialog. Click the
3D View icon for a clearer view of the blocking in the 3D Model viewer (Figure-6).

3. Bottom Plate View under Plan View Image (i.e. looking up through the bottom plate of the
panel).
When a wall panel image is displayed in the View Panel dialog window, there is also a bottom
plate plan view, as though you were looking up through the bottom plate of the panel (Figure-2).
This view can be used to view blocking in the same way that is explained in item #1 above for the
Layout Top Plate View.
o Above Opening.
Leave the Above Opening option unselected (i.e. default) when you do not want blocks added
between the top plate(s) and the top of an opening (Figure-8). However, select the option when
you do want blocks included above the opening (Figure-9).
Figure-8 Figure-9
o Number of Rows.
In the middle of the Add Blocks dialog window (Figure-1), there are three columns labeled; Row
#1, Row #2, and Row #3. Select the number of rows of blocks you want to add to a panel by
clicking the toggle arrow located at the right end of the Number of Rows field to open the drop-
down list (Figure-10) and make a selection of 1, 2, or 3. The number of rows selected is the num-
ber of rows that are active (i.e. not grayed out).
Figure-10
o Block Location.
The Block Location field is used to instruct the software how far down from the top or how far up
from the bottom, depending on how the Located From field is set, you want the blocking inserted
into the panel. Input the Block Location using Ft-In-Sx, In-Sx, or Decimal Ft. format.
The Located From field is used to specify where the Block Location is measured from, either the
Top of the panel down, or the Bottom of the panel up. Click the toggle arrow located at the
right end of the Located From field and make your selection from the drop-down list (Figure-11).
Figure-11
o Block Type.
The Block Type setting enables you to specify whether you want the blocks in the panel to be
lined up in a Normal alignment (Figure-12), or Staggered (Figure-13). Click the toggle arrow loc-
ated at the right end of the Block Type field and make your selection from the drop-down list (Fig-
ure-14).

The Block Placement setting enables you to specify the positioning of the blocks within the
panel. Click the toggle arrow located at the right end of the Block Placement field and make
your selection from the drop-down list (Figure-18).
Figure-18
o Wall Edge.
The Wall Edge refers to one face of the wall (i.e. the Outside) or the other (i.e. the Inside), and
this setting enables you to specify to which edge of the panel you want them applied. Click the
toggle arrow located at the right end of the Wall Edge field and make your selection from the
drop-down list (Figure-19).
Note: This option is only active (i.e. not grayed out) when the Block Placement option is set to
Flat Wise. Refer to examples in the Block Placement bullet.
Figure-19
Select the Delete Existing Blocks option to remove all previously applied blocking conditions
in the selected panel and replace them with Row setting information you have revised. To initiate
the revisions, click the button labeled OK and then click the Save icon located on the Main View
Panel Toolbar.
When this toggle option is left unselected , blocking revisions made in the Row settings are
applied to the selected panel in addition to the blocking that is already present.

Double dashed lines that form an "X" indicate the sheet of Sheathing is a full size sheet (e.g. 4x8, 4x9,
etc.). A single slanted dashed line indicates the sheet of Sheathing is not a full size sheet (i.e. less-than
the standard sizes available in your Sheathing inventory).
In order to clearly identify the sheets of sheathing on a wall panel, each individual sheet displays its sheet
number in a circle. Figure-iP.1 indicates sheet is a full sheet, and is a partial, or less-than full sheet.

The selected sheet turns red to verify selection (Figure-3).
4. After a sheet of Sheathing is selected, the instruction at the bottom of the screen prompts you to:
Select the From Point or press Ctrl to select line or piece.
Single LMB click the cursor on a Point location (i.e. an intersection of lines) to identify
where the Trim or Extend location for the sheet of sheathing selected is to start (Figure-
4). Once the desired Point is clicked, the prompt instructs you to now: Select the To Point;
therefore, click the ending point location for the sheathing. The example in Figure-5 illus-
trates how the sheathing has been shortened (i.e. trimmed) to the center of the wall block-
ing.
Figure-4 Figure-5
When there is a specific piece within the wall panel that you want the sheathing trimmed
or extended against (Figure-6), hold down the keyboard Ctrl key, hover the mouse cursor
over the desired line or piece and then single click the LMB. The sheathing is imme-
diately trimmed or extended (Figure-7).
