UCE 804: Seismic Analysis and Design
B.E. 8th Semester Session 2017-2018
Tutorial Sheet- 05: Lateral load analysis

Q1. A four storey reinforced concrete frame building as shown in

Figure is situated at Roorkee. The height between the floors is
3 m and total height of building is 12 m. The dead load and
normal live load is lumped at the respective floor level. The
soil below the foundation is assumed to be hard rock. If the
building is intended to be used a hospital, determine the
design base shear and floor loads as per IS: 1893 (Part1):
2016. The seismic weights are in kN.

Q2. Considering the free vibration data for a three storied building as given below, calculate the design
seismic forces and lateral force distribution using SRSS. The building is a SMRF structure situated in
Patiala. The soil beneath the structure is a hard rock and the height of each storey is 3 m. The seismic
weights of the top, middle and bottom stories are 640 kN, 690 kN and 690 kN respectively. Mode
shapes and natural periods of vibration for the three modes of vibration are given as:

Q3. For Q2 above, compare the computed design base shear with the base shear calculated using the
fundamental period. Apply base shear correction. The dimensions of the building are 27 m × 11 m.
Assume infill walls on all the beams. Show the distribution of lateral force at each storey in the larger
and shorter directions considering all the modes.
