MACHINES IN THE MEDICAL
FIELD
X-Rays

"An X-ray is a quick, painless test that produces

images of the structures inside your body —
particularly your bones."
"X-ray beams pass through your body, and they
are absorbed in different amounts depending on
the density of the material they pass through.
Dense materials, such as bone and metal, show up
as white on X-rays. The air in your lungs shows up
as black. Fat and muscle appear as shades of
gray."
MRI
"Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a
technique that uses a magnetic field and
radio waves to create detailed images of
the organs and tissues within your body.
Most MRI machines are large, tube-shaped
magnets. When you lie inside an MRI
machine, the magnetic field temporarily
realigns hydrogen atoms in your body.
Radio waves cause these aligned atoms to
produce very faint signals, which are used
to create cross-sectional MRI images — like
slices in a loaf of bread.
The MRI machine can also be used to
produce 3-D images that may be viewed
from many different angles."
ROBOTIC SURGERY

 Robotic surgery allows doctors to perform many types of complex procedures

with precision, flexibility and control than is possible with conventional
techniques.

 "During the last 14 years, over 1.75 million robotic procedures were performed in
the United States across various surgical specialties [1]. Surgical robots enable
conducting complex minimally invasive procedures with better visualization,
increased precision, and enhanced dexterity compared to laparoscopy."
ROBOTIC
SURGERY
 In the year 2000 the number
of robotic surgeries were
around 1000 worldwide.
 12 years later they are doing
around 450,000 a year
worldwide

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

 Hyperloop is a tube created by

Elon Musk that transports
passengers at speeds over 700
MPH from San Francisco to LA
(being tested in those 2 cities,
not yet out)
 Rail travel now is slow and
expensive
 As oil gets more expensive, the
Hyperloop is the solution to all
current train problems
 So far no one is competing with
technology such as Hyperloop
 First phase of California line will
cost approximately $68 billion
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

 European carrier EasyJet is

teaming up with Wright Electric
to build an all-electric airliner
 Aircraft would fly 335 miles or
less (New York to Boston,
London to Paris)
 It would cover 20% of its
passengers journeys
 Hopes to have it flying in the
next decade

 Robot Umpires?
MLB: ADVANCED ANALYTICS

Spray Chart
 Shows hitters tendencies, patterns
 Gives other team information on where to put their
defense for each particular hitter
MLB: ADVANCED ANALYTICS

• Hot Zone
• Breaks down the Strike zone into 9
parts
• Shows hitter where hits he the ball
for success (hit)
• Gives the pitcher and idea of where
to stay away from so he can get this
hitter out.
MLB: STATCAST TECHNOLOGY

 Statcast
 Tracks all different types of advanced stats, including:
 Pitch Velocity (How hard a pitcher is throwing)
 Spin Rate (How much spin the pitcher is getting on the ball)
 Exit Velocity (How hard the ball is coming off the bat)
 Launch Angle (What angle the ball is coming off the bat)
 Distance (how far the ball is coming off the bat)
MLB: VIDEO REPLAY

 Video Replay
 Similar to NFL, once a play happens and the decision on the play is questionable it can
be challenged by the Manager.
 The Manager has 10 seconds to tell the Umpire that they are deciding whether or not
they want to challenge.
 After that there is a team in the booth that has 30 second to get all of the angles from
the TV cameras and then tell the dugout whether or not is it worth Challenging.
 If the Manager decides they want to challenge, the Head Umpire and the umpire that
made the call get on a headset with the Replay Center, which is located in New York.
 The Replay Center then tells the umpire the call and they change it if necessary.
MLB: ROBOT UMPIRES

 Robot Umpires
 The way that the game is evolving, they want to eliminate as much human error as they
can.
 Normally, umpires don’t have a huge amount of say in an outcome of a game, but in the
Postseason, it was obvious that most of the Home Plate umpires were very inconsistent
with their strike-zones.
 This called for players coming out and saying that MLB needs to take a look at the idea
of Robot Umpires, or electronic strike-zones, to eliminate umpire error.
NBA: SPORTSVU

 Started in the 2011-12 season

 Established a system of
identifying and tracking key
events related to individual
play, including a variety of
items (including starting
spots, trajectories, timing
and acceleration data, burst
and stop points, and more).
 NBA finally installed them in
all 30 arenas for the 2013-24
season.
 The first College team to use
it was Duke University.
NFL: INTEL 360 DEGREE CAMERA

 Intel and the NFL installed Intel freeD technology in select NFL stadiums ahead of the
2017 season.
 Installations bring immersive 360 replays powered by Intel technology to fans on NFL’s
digital and mobile platforms as well as in select stadiums.
 Broad technology agreement sets the stage for expanded footprint and new digital
features like “Be the Player” as seen in Super Bowl LI*.
 One feature of Intel’s freeD technology is 360 replay technology, which creates unique
perspectives of game action through “virtual” cameras.
 Each stadium is equipped with dozens of 5K ultra-high definition cameras coupled with
Intel-based servers capable of processing up to 1 terabyte of data per 15- to 30-second
clip.
 Gives you a feeling that you're on the field.
NFL: MICROSOFT SURFACE TABLET

 Starting in the 2014 season, all teams

have sideline access to league-
provided, specially configured
Microsoft Surface tablets, where they
receive high-resolution color images
almost instantaneously.
 The Sideline Viewing System app lets
coaches zoom in, make annotations,
review plays and tag 'favorites' for later
review.
 They had to withstand heat, cold, rain
and glare, so they were rigorously
tested and modified until fit for game
action.

 Examples of Positive impacts on Law Enforcement

 The Laptop-Officers are able to analyze certain
objects at crime scenes, store important information,
and help collect information about suspects and
victims.
 Through The Wall Radar-Allows officers to monitor
movement through walls. Officers use this tool to
mitigate the dangers before entering a building.
 Predictive Analytics-Using software dedicated to
providing insight to criminal patterns, analysts are
able to recognize various activities and cases and even
predict where the next threat will emerge.
LAW ENFORCEMENT

 How technology has revolutionized law enforcement.

 Body cameras and in-car video- Body cameras and other forms of video have increased
officer accountability and have cut down the unnecessary acts of violence.
 Mobile Fingerprinting- Small mobile fingerprint readers give a fingerprint reading in
minutes resulting in a sharp rise in officer productivity.
 Drones- Drones have made improvements in law enforcement involving Search and
Rescue, Traffic Collision Reconstruction, Investigation of Active Shooters/Suspects,
Crime Scene Analysis, Surveillance, and Crowd Monitoring.
SUMMARY

 Technology has positively impacted the

fields of communication, education,
transportation, medication, sports and
law enforcement.
