Pertussis

(Whooping Cough)
What is Pertussis?
An infection of the respiratory system
● Bacterial infection
● Mainly affects kids younger than 6 months
○ Before protected by immunizations
● Kids 11 - 18 immunizations start to fade
● Respiratory infection caused by bacteria
○ Bordetella
Signs and Symptoms:
The first symptoms of “Whooping Cough”
are similar to those of the common flu
● Runny nose
● Sneezing
● Mild cough
● Low-grade fever

Other noticeable symptoms include:


● Uncontrollable “Seal bark” cough
○ Can’t seem to stop to catch breath
Prevention and Treatment
How to Prevent it How to treat it
★ Get vaccinated ● Pertussis is treated with
● Limit baby interaction if feeling sick antibiotics
● Limit interaction with people infected ○ Erythromycin
● With basic bacteria preventions ■ Taken for two weeks

For kids:
● Try to keep them calm
● Humidifier helps
If an Outbreak
Outbreak might start if low vaccination coverage
● Vaccine doesn’t last forever
○ Immunity dies down over time
○ Why outbreaks are common for teenagers
● Spreads through close interaction
○ Oral & respiratory (sneezes, coughs, etc.)
● Keep distance from infants/their parents
● Best to isolate yourself until better
● Go to doctor for antibiotics
Vaccines
Td:
● Actually helps prevent 2 diseases
● CDC recommendation for adults every 10 years
● Recommended to take only after Tdap
DTaP:
● Protect young children
○ Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis
● Given as 5 doses
○ Starts in infancy till ages 4-6
Tdap:
● Protects adults against 3 diseases
● Tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis
● Single dose for people 11+
○ Who haven't taken it before
Our five main focuses for the animation
Purpose
● Inform the community about Pertussis
○ Especially younger crowd and parent
● Prevent the kids infected every year from Pertussis
Timeline
5/10 - 5/14 Make mini animation script to inform adults & children on Pertussis
5/18 - 5/20 Search for people to voice the script
5/22 - 6/7 Start the process of animating the video, along with needed final edits
6/7 Post animation on YouTube
6/10 - 6/20 Share animation with schools around community, for it to get to kids
6/21 Contact different YouTubers to promote or talk about pertussis or
to promote our animation video
6/24 Try to get it on existing health websites
Ex. Health.org, KidsHealth.org, HealthForCalifornia.com
6/27 - 6/ If no response, we will promote it ourselves with our own social medias
Execute the plan
Teaching will be through entertaining animation
- Animation will have both knowledge, & some kind of humor
- Will include all the key points of pertussis
- Key information will be written under video
- Written aid for those that don’t watch video

We will….
● Share animation on social medias
○ For it to get to teens - adults
● Send it to schools
○ For it to get to younger crowd

Did you know…
1. Babies can have seizures because of Pertussis.
2. It can lead to Brain Damage (Bleeding inside brain).
3. Before Pertussis vaccine 5,000 - 10,000 people in the US died each year.
The numbers then lowered to less than 30 deaths, but the numbers are
starting to rise again.
