Before and After Revision of Research Paper

A major component of technology and social media allows for people to instantaneously

connect with others. This type of connection can provide a variety of benefits considering you

can communicate and interact with others all over the world whenever you want. However, this

type of connection can also lead to negative effects, depending on how you interact with others

on social media. For example, during the interview of Rachel Leonard by NPR’s Shankar

Vedantam, he focuses on analyzing the effects of social media on Leonard’s life and

relationships with others. Throughout the interview Shankar determined that Leonard’s initial

use of social media was positive. The technology allowed her to make connections with others

while she was backpacking in Central America and share her awesome experiences. However,

she soon began to provide a false picture of her imperfect life by only posting about positive

aspects of her life. Just a way to reword?- However, she soon began to provide a false picture of

her life by only posting the positive aspects which indicated a very put together, perfect life. One

of the main points of the interview was to reveal that over time, Leonard became [increasingly

unhappy] unhappier with her life as she was publicizing the opposite. The comparison she was

doing of her life to others with this twisted view of her life was the exact same thing the people

she was comparing herself to were doing. Rewording?- The comparison she was making

between her life and others was the exact same thing the people she was comparing herself to

were doing when Leonard would post her “perfect” life.

Technology and social media allow people to instantaneously connect with others. This

type of connection can provide a variety of benefits. Communication and interaction with others

all over the world can be immediate. However, this type of connection can also lead to negative

effects, depending on how someone interacts with others on social media. For example, during
the interview of Rachel Leonard by NPR’s Shankar Vedantam, he focuses on analyzing the

effects of social media on Leonard’s life and relationships with others. Throughout the

interview, Shankar determines that Leonard’s initial use of social media was positive. The

technology allowed her to make connections with others while she was backpacking in Central

America and share her awesome experiences. However, she soon began to provide a false

picture by only posting positive aspects, indicating a well put together, perfect life. One of the

main points of the interview is to reveal that over time, Leonard became increasingly unhappy

with her life as she was publicizing the opposite. The comparison she was making of her life to

others was exactly what the people of which she was comparing herself to were doing.

Considering this, through the misuse of technology the benefits social media first provided for

Leonard were eliminated and instead began to harm her mental state of being. This goes to

support the argument that social media and technology used incorrectly can have harmful results,

much like they did with Leonard.
