in previous years, undergraduates will receive a $3000 stipend from the National Science
Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program to support their attendance. They
are hoping to attract some students who might not normally be able to attend a field school in this
way. While down there we will assist in an archeological dig for four weeks (June 1, 2018 to June
29, 2018) and learn some basic information in lectures and laboratory techniques. Also while
attending this 6 credits will be counted to your school, as well as other opportunities in the
During the workshop, participants will have the chance to study the growth and development of
the human skeleton across various juvenile age cohorts, ranging from prenatal to preadult. In
addition to hands-on laboratory instruction, participants will also contribute to numerous seminar
discussions and hear lectures on topics related to the bioarchaeology of children, respectively:
growth and development, weaning and dietary stress, juvenile trauma and pathology, as well as
reconstruction and interpretation of infant mortality. Moreover, seminars and lectures will
introduce how novel technological applications (i.e., histology, CT imaging) have been utilized
by bio-archaeologists who study juvenile remains. It will take 4 weeks (mandatory, July 3 to July

3) Excavation and Exploration of the Roman Frontier - Transylvania Field School 2018
The project integrates Classical excavation approaches with various exploratory field techniques,
ranging from STP (shovel test pits), geochemical soil analysis (phosphate spot testing), and
surface field collection coupled with topographical total station assisted mapping. We will be
looking at the transformation of the countryside in relation to the development of the Imperial
road river infrastructure, and the role of our “palatial villa” in the development of a "creole"
Roman landscape. Cost: US$ 1295 per session. It will take 4 weeks (mandatory, July 3 to July
28). In addition, you will also have the opportunity to have your name published in a scientific
paper. This session will take place from July 1 to July 21, and will involve new discovered lab
techniques.
