On-Going Research Project

1. NANOFLUID FLOW AND HEAT TRANSFER FOR ENERGY APPLICATIONS (UNDER RESPOND)
(Submitted to Nano Mission, Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, India)
Project estimated cost: Rs 856 Lakhs Project Duration: 36
months
Objective:
The major objective of the project is to make the existing energy systems more efficient by
using nanofluids. The energy systems used for this project are as follows:
1. Direct Absorption Solar Collectors
2. Vapour Compression Refrigeration system
3. Heat exchangers
4. Heat Pipes and
5. Electronics cooling (Micro-channel heat exchanger and porous media)
In this work, use of nanofluids in the above-mentioned energy systems will be studied to
make them more efficient by increasing heat transfer rate and decreasing the viscosity of the
working fluid. This will be tried with different single nanoparticles like C60 – Fullerene,
Single walled CNTs, Multi-walled CNTs, Graphene and Diamond at the starting. To achieve
high heat transfer rate and less viscosity with single nanoparticle in nanofluids is not
feasible, then hybrid nanoparticles will be used for the study.
Anticipated Outcome:

This project will help in the translation of nanofluid technology from the lab scale research to
industrial applications in solar collectors, refrigeration systems, heat-exchangers, heat pipes and
electronics cooling (micro-channel heat exchangers) by making use of correlations developed in
the present work.

2. Stability of nanofluid ( On-going)

Project:

Master’s Project: (Experimental Work)

Topic: “THERMAL ANALYSIS OF THE AUTOMOBILE RADIATOR USING GRAPHENE

NANOFLUIDS”

Abstract: As the technology is emerging day by day, there is a need for some better
methodology which will enhance the performance of radiator. Nanofluid is the one area which
has promised the enhancement of the radiator performance. Currently, Nanofluid has got a well
effective solution for enhancing the performance of the automobile radiators. Suspending the
nano sized particle in the base fluid, with have got better thermal conductivity value when
compared to base fluid, is preferably considered for nanofluid.

In the current work, at first stabilized nanofluid solution of different concentrations are
formulated and then with the help of sophisticated test rig, parametric studies are being carried
out in order to check the performance of the nanofluid over base fluid.

With the proper guidelines and methodology, various experiments are being carried out at
different inlet temperature of fluid and different mass flow rate of fluid and air. At 40OC, 0.04%
concentrated nanofluid showed about 29% improvements and at 50OC, 0.02% nanofluid showed
23% improvement in its effectiveness at lower mass flow rate of fluid. Addition of nanoparticles
in small concentration to the base fluid has negligible effect on friction factor and pressure drop,
which indicates, there will be no need of special arrangement for pumping the nanofluid.

Mini Project: (Analytical work)

Topic: “THERMAL ANALYSIS OF AUTOMOBILE RADIATOR USING NANO FLUIDS”

Abstract: In the present work, we tried to incorporate the Nano sized crystal in the base fluids
i,e 50:50 ethylene glycol, which is the regular cooling agent for radiator system. In the current
work, we tried to variety of concentrated Graphene nanofluid. In this paper, concentration of
nanofluids is varied from 0 (base fluids) to 0.6 %, and studied the variation on effect of Nusselt
number [Nu], Peclet number [Pe], Convective heat transfer rate[h] and Over all heat transfer rate
[U] of the system. The Convective heat transfer rate of Nano-fluid, in radiator showed
improvement in its performance when compared to the base fluid. [20 to 25% enhancement].

Bachelor's Project:

Topic: “Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructure, Mechanically Alloyed Ternary

NiCuZn Magnet”

At first the elemental powder 60um and then it is mechanically synthesized to 5nm by high
energy planetary ball mill machine in NITK Surathkal. Then it is characterized by various
analyses by SEM, VSM, XRD and other analysis in IIT and IISC.

Abstract: In our work the elemental powder of NiCuZn was initially at grain size of 60 microns.
The mechanical alloying is done for about 75 hours using High Energetic planetary ball mill. For
these powder samples characterization is done by XRD, SEM, VSM and CIP analysis . At the
end of 75th hour by XRD analysis the grain size reduced to 13 nm. The VSM analysis showed
that the saturation magnetization goes on decreasing during the course of ball milling. This is due
to the formation of alloying and decrease in the direct Ni-Ni coupling. The CIP analysis also
shows that there is further grain refinement due to the SPD and also formation of amorphous
structure in the large crystalline region.
