I DO

Another topic I had chosen for my thought paper is the film entitled “I Do”. This is a story
about two lovers, Yumi and Lance, who at their young age faced a dilemma of parenthood. Yumi
is still in college when Lance got her pregnant. Since it is a teenage pregnancy, Yumi feared of
what her parents will say or think of her. The two decided that they will face both of their families
together in order to bring out the news to them. However, teenage pregnancy is not just the problem
they were facing, but also the Chinese tradition Lance’s family is following.

We weren’t able to finish the film in class, but still they were values shown in the first few
parts of the film. The conservativeness of Yumi’s family show that they give high importance
when it comes to union. They do not want the child to grow up with just one parent that is why
they were pushing the couple to get married. Even if at first they got mad at Yumi and to what she
got into, at the end of the day, they are still a family and they will stick together no matter what.
They were able to show their support and love for Yumi despite all of the things that happened.
Another value presented is the effort of Yumi and Lance of building a family together. Even if
Lance had doubts about Yumi, he still fought for her and made his family accept Yumi even if
she’s a Filipina. He did not act selfishly, hence taking responsibility of the consequences of their
actions. He did not abandon Yumi.

If we are to apply these values in life, we can learn that whatever happens, family will
always stick together. May it be in good or bad times, at the end of the day it is from your family
where you can get your strength. Also, problem can’t be solved with another problem or by running
from it. By choosing to continue the pregnancy, Yumi showed courage and commitment in
welcoming a new life that is about to come out of her. Her commitment now is for her baby. Even
if it was a product of unintended pregnancy, there was still a reason why it happened to her and
instead of running from it, she faced it with bravery. God does not give us battles that we cannot
fight or win. There are reasons why we are called for such commitments. Through the help of our
family and loved ones, we surely can answer to this call.
