Human Resources Assignment

● Executive Summary

I have been working for East Stroudsburg Alumni Center for about a year and a half now. This
has been my first and only job throughout my life and it has helped me gain skills. It has also let
me improve on some skills I have already been working on. Not only has it shown me the posi-
tive things about myself, but it has taught me where my downfalls are at as an employee. Learn-
ing from my mistakes and flaws helped me flourish even more as a stronger employee that can
contribute to the company in many positive ways. Biggest accomplish that I achieved last year
working for the Phonathon department was having the highest rate of participation with the do-
nors we called. This meant that every time I called about 50 people a night I had the highest
amount of donations per call.

● Accomplishments
Professionalism

In my first year working at the Alumni Center, I set many goals for myself since it is my first job
and I wanted to leave a very memorable impression on my boss. The first goal I set to work on
and eventually accomplished was my professionalism. This was my main goal because I believed
if my professionalism was to an ideal standard then everything else would fall into place. When I
state the word "professionalism" I am referring to on how I conduct myself in the working envi-
ronment. I accomplished to always stay positive even the outcomes are coming out the way I
wanted to be. My demeanor never changed when I was talking to our customers even if they
were very rude to me or disrespectful. I always found a way to stay calm and keep polite towards
them. Another thing that contributes to my professionalism was my reliability. No matter what I
always found the way to get the job done instead of making up excuses for why it seemed impos-
sible. I made sure that my boss was capable of acknowledging that I was a responsible employee
she can count on.

Leadership

One big thing I accomplished to do in just my first year of working at the Alumni Center is a role
model employee for the newbies that came in this year. Not only do I help others when they ask
me for advice or ask how what they should do in a certain situation, but I became almost like one
of the manager figure in our working environment. I was asked to help train the newcomers and
indeed I did, because not only think it would benefit the rest of the new employees but overall
the company. I think to help other helped me gain patience with others and helped my team
building skills grow stronger. Becoming and being a leader has allowed me to gain more com-
munication skills. This allowed me to become the caller with the highest percentage rate to get a
donation from a call. My communication skills came very handily in this situation because I
could properly communicate with our donors. For example, if one was to ask where their money
was going to when they did not have a specific fund to donate to, I could explain to them what
the Warrior fund is and how their money was always going to be useful no more the fund it went
to or the amount they decided to donate. This allowed the donor to feel much comfortable know-
ing their money was making an impact for someone and anyone on campus when needed. By
having more people donate this meant the next year we had a better chance at having more
money coming in because we had more donors and more retention. This also allowed me to ac-
complish my goal for the two-semester within my first year of working. My first semester the
goal to have about $2,500 money raised which I achieved. My second semester was $3,000 in
which I actually exceeded.

● Areas of Improvement
Attention to detail

When it comes to doing my task I have always been the person to just look at the overall picture
most of the time. I believe that paying more attention to detail is something I truly need to work
on because I miss on simple instructions sometimes or even a simple thing like on how to organ-
ize a file the way our boss wants it. It has been a big issue with my employer but I think it is
something I can avoid because it could be should simple thing that can one day get me in deep
trouble. I want to avoid being a hassle for the company instead I want to support the company as
much as I can.

Multitasking

Another thing that I find relevant to being a person who looks at the whole picture in a task is
finding the way to get as many tasks done as possible. I think in reality I do not really multitask
because I think it is impossible to actually. I find it to be that I get distracted easily sometimes.
For example, if I am working on my list of callers and someone asks me to help them I will pri-
oritize helping them first instead of continuing to complete my task. Another example would that
if a caller asks me to send them more information which most the time is just a detailed email
that I can do at the end of my shift or a manager can do, I would do it. This distracts me from my
main task which is to finish my list of calls I have to. Even though I finish my list all the time
sometimes I might be rushing and do not spend much time talking with the donors. This is affect-
ing my work in the long run, because I would always be rushing and never having my full atten-
tion on the task at hand. Resulting in not having the job done best to my ability.

Listening skill

When it comes to my listening skills I believe it can be improved a bit more not make my under-
standing of the task better. When I say listening skills I am not talking about the basic part. I can
sit there and listen to anyone and maintain eye contact with them, but I am referring to properly
understanding everything they say and being able to apply what they say to the workplace. By
improving my listening skills I can gain more useful information that will only benefit me in a
positive to help me finish my work. Another reason why I would like to improve my listening
skills is that I think this is a way to gain trust between me and the rest of my coworkers. Know-
ing that someone is listening to you or the instructions carefully help the overall team feel more
confident that everyone knows what they are doing.

● Areas of Continued Learning and Development

Social Development

An area thing that is important I develop more is being more opened and sociable. I think this
would help me understand my coworkers better and overall enjoy being at work much more. I
already feel like I get along with everyone and I enjoy being at work but getting to know some
people on a deeper level will enhance my relationship with them. By getting to know people on a
deeper level I will learn on what their goals are and how I can either support or help them
achieve their goals.

Criticism
This a big area I can develop more and learn from it too. Criticism is a vital aspect of growing as
a worker. Both giving and getting feedback is important, because it will allow me to improve
myself not only from what I think I should but from the view of my coworkers. Being able to
take criticism in a positive way is a good thing. My downfall is I always take it personally and
never take it as motivation thing. This is just hurting myself but I will be starting to taking it less
personal and take it only has motivation tool. On the other hand, I think I can learn more about
how to give feedback to help my coworkers improve themselves. At the end of the day, criticism
is going to help us all and the company main objective get done.

● Looking Ahead

Looking ahead into the future and planning out goals and how to achieve is essential to being a
successful company. Planning ahead with my goals makes me less stress and keeps me moti-
vated with the job. Having a plan ahead of time keeps me on track for the main objective and
helps me remember what I have to get done day to day to achieve that objective. Planning ahead
into the future helps me also avoid many future challenges that I might have encountered if I did
not figure out a solution ahead of time. Having to face challenges is a good and bad thing. It is a
bad thing because since I always stop and think about the most optimum option I can take.
Which involves me thinking about all my options and possible outcomes. This becomes a very
time-consuming thing to do. It can be a very good thing because helps me with my decision-
making skills which will, later on, help me in my future career in which I will be forced to make
big and important decisions for my company. Having practice and experience will benefit much
greater in the nearby future with my ideal career. Overall learning to plan ahead and set my goals
early will help me accomplish them more effectively.
