Review Questions
1. In order to determine the density of a substance, it is necessary to find both the mass of a
sample of the substance and the volume of the sample (2 marks; ½ mark each point).
(a) State briefly how you would determine the mass of the sample if it is (i) a solid; (ii) a
liquid?
i) A solid can be measured simply by placing it onto a calibrated scale.
ii) To measure the mass of a liquid, the container's mass must first be measured. The container's mass must
then be subtracted from the mass of the liquid in the container, in order to get the mass of the liquid only.
(b) How would you determine the volume of a sample if it is (i) a regular solid; (ii) an
irregular solid; (iii) a liquid?
i) The length, width, and height of the object must be recorded using a ruler, and equated using the formula V =
L x W x H.
ii) Measure the volume of a liquid and subtract the difference after the solid is dropped in.
iii) Pour liquid into a graduated cylinder and read the volume markings provided.
2. An empty graduated cylinder has a mass of 45.6 g. When filled with 38.6 mL of a liquid, the
total mass of the container and the liquid is 58.2 g. Calculate the density of the liquid (1 mark).
D = M/V
D = 12.6g/38.6mL
D = 0.326g/mL
4. What is the density of whole blood for a human (use units g/mL)? (2 marks)
1060kg/m3 -> 1,060,000g/m3 -> (100cm)3 = (1m)3 -> 1,000,000cm3 -> 1,060,000g/m3/1,000,000cm3 = 1.06g/cm3
1cm3 = 1mL Therefore, D = 1.06g/mL
