ANALYSIS PAPER
Fire Extinguisher
By Doms Pagliawan

Fire extinguisher tells to the reader that we need to know better the person we just met, before we
trust them. Instead of choosing fire extinguisher as a symbol, I prefer an eye to be a unique symbol to this
story. I choose an eye for my symbolism in the story because an eye can sometimes be illusive to the
person who owned these. An eye will only notice the physical appearance of a person; it cannot imagine
or think the people who are there around you.

There are 5 main characters in the story. The first character is Benjie. He looked like a teenager in
his blue jeans and white t-shirt, bringing a small, half- empty bag. He is the one in the story who trust
immediately to other characters here. The second character is Opok. Opok is a short and fat man in the
story. He has the quality of fooling persons and making them believe that money is better than the trust of
a person. The third character is the old man. This man looked elegant with polished black shoes, hair
glossy with pomade, well-pressed polo shirt and brown slacks. Yet his face showed ignorance of the
place, appearing quiet pathetic. Below his tacked-in polo shirt, or inside of it, something like bundles of
paper protruded, circling his waist. The fourth character is the hardware guy. He is a tall man, holding a
bunch of keys. He fools all the people that he is a seller of fire extinguisher. And the last character is the
salesgirls who are introduced in the last part of the story and the one who tell Benjie that the hardware
guy is not there working.

I see myself to Benjie because there are times that I am blind of what is really happening in my
surrounding until one day I will realize that there is something going on that I need to stop because it will
not make me progressive anymore. Knowing that I always trust people. That there is someone who is
there for me always to help me sincerely to the task I have. Which does not really exist, I’m just
imagining that there is a serious and sincere man behind my back to support and help me through the
days.

There are actually lots of lessons learned in the story. First is we should know the place where we
will about to go, so that you are sophisticated about the place. Second is do not trust people especially to
the people we just met earlier. Don’t talk as much as possible. Third is do not believe immediately to
people we don’t know yet.
