Math Lesson Plans 4/16 – 4/20

SOL K.6 The student will model adding and subtracting whole numbers, using up to 10 concrete objects.

In order to meet this standard, it is expected that students will


 Identify numbers up to 10.
 Be able to subtract two numbers together up to 10.
 Show how to create subtraction equations using manipulatives.
 Be able to subtract two numbers using fingers up to 10.
 Be able to subtract two numbers using pictures up to 10.

Materials: Guided Practice: 5 Groovy Buttons Song
Smart Board Calendar
Instruction: Read the 5 Groovy Buttons book
- Pass out Pete the Cat and buttons (5 for each student)
- While reading the book to students, they will do subtraction with
their own buttons and Pete the Cat
Guided/Independent Practice: Subtraction worksheet
- Model the first two questions whole group and have students
complete the rest independently
Differentiation:
Group 1: War math game on carpet
Group 2: Race to 100 with Mrs. Sancheiz
Group 3: Number recognition with Ms. Waterfield
Closure: Have students share with each other what they learned about
subtraction.

Materials:
Smart Board Calendar Guided Practice: Review Pete the Cat and have students complete
problems whole group while I model on the board
Instruction: Complete the Frog Book whole group
- Pass out white boards and have students practice writing the
equations on their white boards
Guided/Independent Practice: Frog worksheet w/ cut out frogs on logs
- Complete first 2 problems whole group
- Have students finish sheet independently
Differentiation:
Group 1: War math game on carpet
Group 2: Race to 100 with Mrs. Sancheiz
Group 3: Number recognition with Ms. Waterfield
Closure: Students will count to 100 by 5’s for extra practice.

Materials:
Smart Board Calendar Guided Practice: Read Cookie from the Cookie Jar Book
Instruction: Cookie from the Cookie Jar worksheet with cookies
- Students will be given cookies to put in their cookie jar
- Students will be asked to eat a cookie or two and will have to tell
how many cookies they have left to model subtraction
- Students will also be given whiteboards and will be asked to write
the subtraction equation, then will solve the problem
- This will be completed whole group as well as independently
Guided/Independent Practice: Subtraction worksheet
- Complete first problem whole group
- Have students finish sheet independently
Differentiation:
Group 1: War math game on carpet
Group 2: Race to 100 with Mrs. Sancheiz
Group 3: Number recognition with Ms. Waterfield
Closure: Review with cookies and do 1 problem

Instruction: Snake Subtraction
- Students will be given snake subtraction sheets and will need to
cut it out
- Students will be given verbal word problems using their snake
Guided/Independent Practice: Snake Subtraction Worksheet
- Complete first problem whole group
- Have students finish sheet independently
Differentiation:
Group 1: War math game on carpet
Group 2: Race to 100 with Mrs. Sancheiz
Group 3: Number recognition with Ms. Waterfield
Closure: Review as a whole group by adding two dice together.

Instruction: Goldfish stories
- Students will be given fish bowl sheets and 5 goldfish
- Students will listen to word problems and eat the goldfish that
leave the fish bowl
- Students will create equations on whiteboards form the word
problems
Guided/Independent Practice: Subtraction worksheet
- Complete first problem whole group
- Have students finish sheet independently
Differentiation:
Group 1: War math game on carpet
Group 2: Race to 100 with Mrs. Sancheiz
Group 3: Number recognition with Ms. Waterfield
Closure: Review with mental math finger cards.
