TOPIC OF LESSON: Introduction to tourism

PRE – KNOWLEDGE: Students have experience as domestic and regional tourists.

Students have been exposed to the different reasons people travel.

OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to:

1. Explain the term tourism.(Cognitive-Understanding)

2. Differentiate between a tourist and a visitor. (Cognitive-Analysing)

3. Demonstrate the ability to distinguish between the different types of tourism using a

concept map. (Cognitive-Analysing)

4. Classify the different types of tourists.(Cognitive-Understanding)

5. Participate in a class discussion on the reasons people travel. (Affective-

Responding)

6. Express their appreciation for domestic travel as a leisure activity. (Affective-

Valuing)

SET INDUCTION: Time: (2 mins) –

The teacher will show images of a passport, cruise ship and aeroplane and ask students to

predict the day’s lesson.

SESSION 1: Time allotted 60 mins.

Teaching points:
1. Tourism is the movement of people from their usual place of abode to a destination
for reasons other than work.

2. The most significant difference between a visitor and a tourist is that whereas a
tourist stays at a destination less than 24 hours, a tourist overnights and stays at the
destination more and 24 hours but less than a year.

fees, head and departure taxes on visitors, taxes on businesses in
tourism industry
- Revenue earned is used to provide social services

3. Negative economic impact of tourism

- Prime agricultural land is cleared and used for tourism facilities (hotels)
- High wages in hotel sector attracts workers away from agricultural
sector

- Tourism creates greater local demand for imported foods
- Increased land prices due to the demand for land for tourism
development
