PASS REFLECTION

Before I undertook my education in Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (G.M.I.T.) I was

not aware of Peer Assisted Student Support (PASS). On my first day of college I was quite
nervous but it was quickly subsided as the Pass leaders explained to me what life in Letter frack
was like and how great the college is. They also helped me to get to know each one of my new
class mates.
I also felt that the PASS sessions every Tuesday where a great help to me. These sessions
allowed any questions I had about my course or anything else to be answered. The sessions
also allowed me to get to know my classmates better as we had time to get to know each other
unlike lectures where we cannot really talk to each other.
I also fell that it allowed me to adjust to the demands of third level education quicker than I
expected. If I had any questions about college life all I had to do was turn around and ask one
of the PASS leaders. It helped me to understand things such as referencing and citing which I
never knew before. I think it also helped me with upcoming CA’s as our pass leaders informed
us what to expect in exams and how to give the write answer. For me personally it aided my
understanding of technical graphics as I never did it before in school and was struggling with
the module at the start.
But I did feel that the PASS classes were slightly receptive. After the initial settling in period
of college and now up to speed with the demands of college life and gained an understanding
of my modules I found it slightly a burden on my timetable. I would maybe recommend a PASS
class every second week or something similar. I understand for some students they needed all
the PASS provided but this is how I feel from my perspective. I would admit that I have missed
numerous pass sessions as I felt that they had lost their effect for. I just felt that they had given
me all that they had to give and that it would be a waste of time going to more session.
Overall I felt that the PASS sessions were a good success for me personally as well as for my
classmates. They helped me to settle third level and learn what is expected of me at third level
education. I feel that Peer Assisted Student Support is the perfect thing to support first years in
the first in the first few weeks of third level and hope that it will be as successful for the first
year students after me.
