Project Proposal
October 25, 2017
1. What specific area(s) within the field will be investigated, researched, and/or
studied?
Within the field of veterinary medicine, I will be focusing on dentistry and cardiology.
Specifically, I will study how dental disease affects the development of chronic degenerative
valvular disease (CVD) in dogs.
2. How will knowledge or ability in the field be acquired, developed, and demonstrated
through the year?
Knowledge in the field will be acquired throughout the year through shadowing doctors and
technicians on site to learn about veterinary medicine. Additionally knowledge will be acquired
through reading articles/journals on similar topics and experiments in the field. Knowledge will
be demonstrated through presentations, the paper, and the final product.
3. What will be the product(s) and/or outcome(s) of the internship?
The internship will provide me with insight of veterinary medicine and allow me to see real
patients being treated first-hand. The product/outcome will be a paper in which I examine the
significance of periodontal disease on chronic degenerative valvular disease.
4. What proven need will be addressed? What real problem will be solved? What
question will be researched?
Chronic degenerative valve disease is the most common heart disease in dogs, and affects many
dogs who are less than forty pounds and greater than five years old. The question I will be
researching is “How does dental disease affect the development of chronic degenerative valvular
disease in dogs?”.
5. What is the intended audience for the project? Who, other than the student, will
learn or benefit as a result of the work? To whom will the outcomes be
communicated? For whom is the product or result intended?
Aside from the student, the result of the work could benefit pet owners, by portraying how
periodontal disease could affect their dog’s chance of acquiring chronic degenerative valve
disease. Therefore it would help pet owners learn how they can decrease their pet’s likelihood of
heart disease.
6. Will the audience be local, state, or national?
The audience will be local, state, and national, as the intended audience, dog owners, exists at all
three levels.
7. How will the products and outcomes be communicated to or performed for the
selected audience? What will be the outlet vehicle?
The outcomes of the research will be presented to the audience in a paper, and through an online
webpage.
8. What resources will be required for the project? (human, print, organization,
media)
Organization will be required to help me successfully complete the project on time, and humans
will be required to guide me in my internship. Additionally journals and articles will be used to
help me research my topic.
9. What are the special considerations of the project? (cost, materials, equipment,
transportation, special permission, printing/distribution)
Transportation may be a slight issue because my mother, my sister, and I share a car, thus I
frequently have to rely on them for rides and be cognizant of their schedules. I do not believe
cost, materials, equipment, etc. will be an issue.
