Abstract:

We have done this experiment to calculate the calorific value of a liquid/solid fuel by bomb calorimeter
although it did not work with our lap group after it was supposed to explode the fuel by a wire in a
calorimeter filled by 2 liter amount of water then the water temperature was recorded after pressing test
button an measure it ever 10 seconds if there is any difference for almost one hour maybe one of the
steps was wrong so it didn’t explode at the end I have read some books about our experiment and I found
a conclusion the purpose of this experiment is to measure the heat of the water that was below 23 where
heat causes a rise of the temperature by the calorimeter is which is assessed and used to measure the
change of energy while combustion.

Introduction:

The bomb calorimeter is the most common device for measuring the heat of combustion or calorific value
of a material but we have used a manual bomb calorimeter maybe our data have some mistakes but at the
end we have know what is bomb calorimeter and how it works and why we used it. The fuel is kept on a
Crucible supported by wires connected to each side it uses electrical energy to ignite the fuel as the fuel
which made out of carbon and hydrogen is burning, it will heat up it is mostly used in chemistry to assign
the value of the temprture for the material is burning in the air of oxygen under some pruser that’s why
we used Container chilled in water and put in it the assign the air will fill in the containaer on pruser
between 20 and 30 par . the material we want to test is placed in a crucible then placed in the bomb and
ignited by electrical energy , by determining the rise of the tumperture and the waight and mass then we
can calculate the thermal value of sample material .

Principle of work & Components:

Quantum information of water is placed in an isolated chamber to absorb the heat released from the
reaction by absorbing the energy absorbed by the reaction and then we can measure the change in the
temperature of the water mass.
This type, called the price of detonation or the bomb is a price used by nutrition chemists.

Theory Bomb

calorimeter is a gadget used to decide warming estimation of any fuel. It is a container which can endure
high weight. An example of fuel appending with a start wire is filled into tried container. It is put inside
the bomb, and pressurized by 30 bar of oxygen. The bomb is put inside a 2 liter water basin, and shut to
finish the readiness. The bomb is touched off by squeezing the red catch for 2-3 seconds until the point
when light happens. The temperature of water is for the most part estimated at regular intervals through
the trial. Be that as it may, the water temperature is to be estimated at 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, and 120
seconds in the wake of terminating. The bomb calorimeter can likewise be balanced its productivity by
having two water can. The water temperature in the additional basin is acclimated to be the same as the
water temperature of thinner pail persistently. It is the same as adding ideal encasing to avert misfortune
amid the experiment. Subsequently, more exact figures are obtained. The motivation behind why 30 bar
of unadulterated oxygen is compacted into the bomb is that complete combustion is required. The entire
measure of analyzed fuel is to be responded with oxygen and produces CO2

. On the off chance that fuel makes out of hydrogen, it is important to drop 1-2 drop of water to make
beyond any doubt that the ignition happens in immersion condition which water can't condenses. After the
burning procedure, there is 2 period of water that can be delivered. In the event that it is in liquid phase,
the gotten warming worth is high warming quality. In the opposite, on the off chance that it is in vapor
phase, the acquired warming quality is low warming worth. The connection between these two is Q hhv

= Q LHV + h fgH2O (m H2O/ mf )

The volume of the bomb calorimeter is constant, so the equation for heating value is Q
HV= -∆U. This equation is also applied
with constant volume combustion (Benzene engine). If the combustion occurs with constant pressure
(Diesel engine), the equation is Q
HV= -∆H.
The heating value obtained from this experiment is high heating value at constant volume

Procedure:

Prepare the sample in the bomb

Closing the bomb

Filling the bomb with oxygen

Fill the calorimeter bucket with cold water less than 23 celsius

Final setting connect the power source

Read and record temperatures after 10 min when it starts

Recording change in temperature every 10 sec

Calculation

Mass of coal = 0.50 x 10-4kg

Mass of water = 2.000 kg
Pressure of oxygen = 25 bar
Specific heat capacity of water = 4.187 kJ / (kg· oC)
Water equivalency for calorie meter, bomb and mixer = 0.3983 kg

Mass of fuel x calorific value = (mass of water + water equivalent of bomb )x temp x specific heat of
water
(5*10^-4kg )x (Qgr,v)=(2 kg= 0.3983kg) x (278.5k) x(4.18x10^3(j/kg.k))
Qgr, v =5583.87 mj/kg
Qnet , v = Qgr, v –(9mh x 2.453)
=5583.87mj/kg-(9(0.06)x 2.453)
=5582.55MJ/kg
