Kayla Bardales_5E Lesson Plan Ideas

Subject area/course/grade level (2 points): Mathmatics, First Grade

Standards (State and ISTE Standards for Students) (2 points):

Compare two two-digit numbers based on meanings of the tens and ones digits, recording the results of comparisons
with the symbols >, =, and <. [1-NBT3]
1c: Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and imporves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in
a variety of ways.

Objectives (2 points):

SWBAT demonstrate the understanding of comparing two two digit numbers based on meaning of the tens and ones digits,
recording the results of comparison with the symbols >,<, and =.

SWBAT explore using technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and will demonstrate their
learning in a varity of ways.

Differentiation Strategies (2 points):

How will the lesson address the various learning styles of the students and the needs of those with special needs?

-Special needs students will get one on one help and intervention when needed.
-Tier 1 students will be able to use maniplulatives while solving their math problems. Using manipulatives will allow the
students to actually see that three cubes are less than ten cubes.
-Tier 2 students will be given an activity to do on their own, but I will still be there for the students if they may need support.
-Tier 3 students will be given higher order thinking questions, and allowed to explore this entire standard in depth.

ENGAGEMENT (18 points):

Activity 1: After the math lesson I would review by showing a clip from youtube. It is a fun upbeat song about the “number
gator” and the students would learn hand motions and be able to “chomp” the bigger numbers.

Activity 2: During this activity students will be viewing the smartboard for an interactive video. During this video there will be
gator puppets passed out to each student. As a class we will practice chomping side to side. During the video students will be
able to chomp and show which side the gator would eat. To view the video please click the link provided:

EXPLORATION (18 points):

Activity 1: Students will have individual tablets or devices at their tables. They will go to education.com and play the
educational activity provided for them. They will click and drag the correct sign to tell which number is greater than, less than,
or equal to. If students pick the wrong answer they will be guided to select a different gator.
By click the link provided you may access this learning activity: https://www.education.com/game/less-than-greater-than/

Activity 2:

Activity 2: Group 2 will be seated in desks, bean bag chairs, or anywhere they feel comfortable learning. Each student will have
their own tablet or device. The students will be diving into an application called AdaptedMind. Within this application you can
specify which grade, and which math activity will be taught. The students are able to create their own charater and earn coins
and different insentives. If the student is confused and does not know the answer they may click on the dragon at the top right
corner and a screen pops up. The screen then walks the student through the problem and allows the student another chance.
The specific activity can be found by clicking this link: http://www.adaptedmind.com/p.php?tagId=10 .
Students will be given two questions to answer outloud.
1. How can you prove your answer?
2. How can you check your answer?

ELABORATION (18 points):

Asignment #1: Induvidually the students will create real life examples of how to compare numbers using less than, greater than,
and equal to. Each student will create a picture using Microsoft Word with two groups of real life items. They will be asked to
pick two numbers, and given the question, “Can you draw a picture to prove your answer?”. Once they have picked what they
will be using the students will separate their items into two spate groups. Then they will have to correctly place the correct sign
showing their value. Each student will be given the freedom to make their project their own, if they would like gator signs will
be provided. You may see an example of this assignment below:

Asignment #2: Students will be working in groups of two for the next assignment. The class will be taken to the computer lab
and asked to pair up in sets of two. They will go to a website called, “Sketch Pad 4.1”. To acsess this website please click here:
https://sketch.io/sketchpad/ . Students will be able to select pictures, add text, or draw their own intrupretation of comparing
numbers. They will be asked to come up with any two numbers and correctly compare, illustrate, and write a sentence telling
the outcome. Example of the finished product is provided below:

EVALUATION (18 points):
Group Project Rubric:

Approved January, 2013

My students scored a 20/20
of this activity.

Individual Project Rubric:

Approved January, 2013

My student did a great
job earning a total of
16/20 on her
assignment. She scored
a 4 on every catergory
but the explanation
category. They reason
she scored a 3 on the
catergory tap is
because she did not
correctly draw the
gator mouth.

Formative Assessment: During this assessment students would need some type of hand held device or tablet. You could
have students inivdually play at their table. The link below is a Kahoot game where the students would be timed and have

to answer using their devices. It is fun and exciting because not only is it timed, but the score board keeps score of the
students who answer the quickest. This would motivate student participation, and have to students excited and engaged.
