Allen, Elisa. "When Will the Government Take the Violence of Hunting with Hounds.." The

Independent (Daily Edition), 12 Jan, 2018, pp. 34, SIRS Issues Researcher,

https://sks.sirs.com.

The article “When the Government Take the Violence of Hunting with Hounds."

discusses the brutality and events due to fox hunting in the Uk. The people of the UK are

pressing the government to enforce the fox hunting law with more force and effort.

I plan to use this article as an example of how people take advantage of the lackluster

behavior presented by law enforcement when it comes to protecting animals or anything

outside humans.

Bachmann, Helena. "In a World First, Switzerland Deems it Illegal to Boil a Lobster." USA

Today (Online), 17 Feb, 2018, SIRS Issues Researcher, https://sks.sirs.com.

The article "In a World First, Switzerland Deems it Illegal to Boil a Lobster" talks about

law that went into effect March 1, 2018. The law banned the cooking method of tossing

live lobsters into a pot boiling water. This practice is being outlawed by Switzerland as

they have stated the “it's cruel and lobsters can sense pain.”.

This news article is a perfect way to show how steps are being put in place to change the

way we view animals. The fact that this is an actual law that is being placed shows real

impact. Within this article they also talk about other laws they have in place as well as

research which will be of great use for my paper.

Borgonjan, David X. "The Art of Destroying an Artwork.", 25 Oct, 2017, https://sks.sirs.com.

The article "The Art of Destroying an Artwork." discusses the controversy involving the

.Guggenheim Museum. The museum has added three new pieces that used live animals to

create art. One of them included dogs that were leashed onto wooden treadmills as they

were attempting to attack each other. Because they were pressured by online petitions

and on-site protests the pieces were withdrawn.

With this article it connects animal rights with other issues of the world. It show how the

mistreatment of animal sparked a debate of something bigger. Essentially raising the

question whether or not controversial art pieces should be altered or removed from

museums.

Dale, Christopher. "Animals Deserve Protection from Abuse." TCA News Service, 17 Apr,

2018.

SIRS Issues Researcher, https://sks.sirs.com.

The article "Animals Deserve Protection from Abuse." discusses how the state to state

laws are too lax inflicting punishment for animal cruelty. They talk about a number of

cases where offenders got a mere slap on the wrist for such a crime.

I will use this article to complement another article where it discusses law enforcement.

This article points out a weakness in the punishment of committing animal cruelty. Using

this will help me prove lackluster attitude the law enforcement system has towards

animal rights.

Johnson, Quintibius. “Animal Rights” Survey. 10 apr.2018.

This survey is asks the opinions of 26 high school students. It asks them questions such

as how they feel about animals having their own rights.

I will use this article to show how others feel about animal rights. The source was

anonymous so it was completely unbiased meaning all of the answers are real.

McCartney, Scott. "On Your Next Trip, Leave the Pets at Home." Wall Street Journal, 21 Mar,

2018, pp. A.11. SIRS Issues Researcher, https://sks.sirs.com.

"On Your Next Trip, Leave the Pets at Home." is about the unsafe pet travel in the United

Airlines. It basically says that dozens of pets are killed or injured during plane travel.

Because they are labeled “cargo” there aren’t any precautions taken place in order to keep

them safe.

This article exposes United Airlines’ ignorance toward animal safety which shows how

much humans value animal life.

Michaels, Jim. "How Cuddly Olympics Mascot Became Controversial." USA TODAY, 19 Feb,

2018, pp. D.6, SIRS Issues Researcher, https://sks.sirs.com.

The article "How Cuddly Olympics Mascot Became Controversial." helps show how it's

possible to protect the animals. In the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics Korea's mascot

has caused a lot of controversy similar to the dog meat trade. The mascot is a black bear

which can also be called moon bears and about 1,000 of this species are being kept on

bear farms. The bears are usually kept to about age 10 where they are then killed for their

gallbladder to make bile.

This article is great because it is somewhat of an extension to another article I referenced.

With it I will be able to connected the to pieces to create and perspective.

Nuwer, Rachel. "Elephants as Trophies? an Endless Debate." New York Times, 05 Dec, 2017

pp. D.1, SIRS Issues Researcher, https://sks.sirs.com.

The article “ Elephants as Trophies? an Endless Debate?” talks about the about the debate

on whether or not revenue from big game hunting should be used to protect endangered

species.

I plan to use this article to show both sides of the issue. In the article there are some

arguments that both parties commonly use against each other. The article can strengthen

my paper being that it leans more on the pro animal rights side of the argument. It’s also

good because it also states opinions and viewpoints from the opposing side.

Pynn, Larry. "Province Puts Ban on Hunting Grizzly Bears.", 19 Dec, 2017, pp. A.3,

https://sks.sirs.com.

The article "Province Puts Ban on Hunting Grizzly Bears." talks about the immediate ban

of legal hunting grizzly bears for trophy and food with the exception of first nations that,

who can hunt for food, ceremonial uses.

I can use this article just as I did with the article about the law passed in Switzerland. In

order to show others the importance of animal right I have to show that i’m no the only
Johnson 6

one who cares about this issue. By bringing these types of laws out into the light that the

average person would overlook is extremely important to my cause.

Rogers, Martin. "Winter Olympics Shine Light on Korean Dog Meat Trade." USA TODAY, 07

Feb, 2018, pp. C.1, SIRS Issues Researcher, https://sks.sirs.com.

The news article “Winter Olympics Shine Light on Korean Dog Meat Trade” discusses

the dog and cat meat trade going on in Korea. This year Korea is hosting the 2018 Winter

Olympics and many plan to use the spotlight around the event to create awareness for cat

and dog meat being eaten in korea. For foreigners this is seen as horrible but in Korea it’s

apart of their culture although for the Olympics the Korean government is encouraging

restaurants to hide menus and stop serving meals containing dog or cat meat.

I will use this particular article as an example showing that animal rights is a real issue

that is taken seriously. If people are planning to use a stage as big as the Winter

Olympics, then it means that this is an important matter and gives you a good estimate of

how many people are against the mistreatment of animals. This article will help me

highlight events that are related to my topic and strengthen my argument.

Samuel, Henry. "Norway Sparks Outcry by Raising Whaling Quota." Telegraph.co.uk., 07 Mar,

2018, SIRS Issues Researcher,https://sks.sirs.com.

The article “ Norway Sparks Outcry by Raising Whaling Quota” discusses Norway’s reasoning
Johnson 7

for rising the whaling quota. Because Of their announcement many other countries and animal

rights activists are trying to convince them not to raise the quota 28%.

I plan to use this article as a gateway to bring up the horrendous methods of hunting whales.

Doing this will show why whale hunting should not exist. The inhumane practices of whale

hunting will paint a vivid picture of the terrible acts done by mankind to these beautiful.

Schuetze, Christopher F. "Law and Order: Dutch Animal Welfare Unit." New York Times, 30

Jan, 2018, pp. A.10, SIRS Issues Researcher,https://sks.sirs.com.

The article "Law and Order: Dutch Animal Welfare Unit." discusses the story about a member

of the animal police force after he rescued a puppy from freezing to death from a snowstorm on a

terrace. Sergeant Smit is a 39-year veteran of the national police force and a full time member of

the animal force in the Netherlands. The officer rescued the dog from the terrace with a 22-ton

fire truck with a crane and platform. The entire rescue added up to 500 euros which is about 620

dollars. When the owner had returned he was charge 150 euros for animal neglect.

This article gives an example of how animal rights are being enforced in other countries. The

story of the Netherland police officer is a strongly supports my topic. It shows how important

animal neglect is. By using this article it emphasizes the enforcement part of the animal rights

protest.
