The client’s instructions include documents
given to them by the police.
2. Retainer letter to the Client 13 March
Analyse the client’s instructions, and write
to the client to:
- confirm you act and in relation to what
(the retainer)
- acknowledge instructions (brief summary)
- identify the charges with a brief
explanation of them
- give simple explanation of an indictable
offence triable summarily
- indicate the range of penalties that could
be imposed if the client is found guilty
- state that you will seek further
information from the police and then advise
the client more fully
- advise on costs and enclose a completed
Costs Disclosure.

and copy of required police documents

4. Seek consent to adjourn the first court 19 March


date
The date on the summons is the 1stmention
of the matter, and will need to be
adjourned. Seek client’s consent to adjourn
to a further mention so you have time to
prepare.

5. Obtain client’s consent to adjourn 23 March

to your client.

9. Memorandum to Counsel 19 April


Prepare the Memorandum to Counsel to
appear on behalf of the client on the
contested date, and to give advice in
conference.

The Brief fee is $800.00 (plus GST).

10. Letter to Client (about Conference) 23 April


Write to the client advising he is to attend a
conference with counsel.

A pre-court conference is an interview by
