JUSTIFCATION FOR INTRODUCTION OF PROPOSED

DEPLOMA IN TELECOMMUNICATION
NEED FOR THE PROPOSED PROGRAM IN TELECOMMUNICATION

Justification

The current shortage in telecommunication personnel which began in 1998 when Ghana opted to
go into GSM still exists despite the many efforts to increase the supply of telecom personnel.
The shortage is interfering with the telecommunication quality of service (QOS) in Ghana

Within the next two decades, Ghana will face the challenge of replacing much of the
telecommunication workforce.

Employment Demand

The ongoing telecom personnel shortage in Ghana has made the employment picture for telecom
consistently strong into the foreseeable future. From statistics, the 2006 estimated employment
for telecom personnel was 1500 with a projected demand of 2500 or more. This represents an
increase of 1000 telecom personnel.

With the increase of IT firms, telecom providers, GSM providers, academics, more telecom
personnel need to be trained to take up these challenges.

Student Demand

Koforidua Polytechnic Department of Applied Mathematics is seeking to establish a

telecommunication program in an effort to attract a new cadre of well prepared students to the
institution and to continue to address its mission of service and contribution to the academic
progression of Ghana,

The student demand for this new program is primarily based on the natural demand for people
inclined in telecom

Although current student demand at the department has not been a major driving force for the
development of the program, informal inquiries about the program are already being received via
phone call and email.

Duplication

The proposed program is not duplicative of programs at other institutions

Program Satisfaction

Students will be surveyed during their final semester concerning the general satisfaction with the
program and their preparation for the world of practice.

The program will establish a benchmark of at least 90% of student expressed satisfaction with
their educational experience and preparation for the job market.

Employer Satisfaction

Employer satisfaction with the performance of Koforidua Polytechnic Diploma graduates will be
surveyed one year after the graduation with a benchmark that 90% of respondents will report that
they are satisfied with the performance of the graduates.

Accomplishment of Graduates

The outcome evaluation plan will also include surveying diploma graduates five years after
graduation to obtain data about career progression, certification status, certification study and
participation in professional organizations and activities such as research and scholarship.
