HARDMEAD BRIDGE STRENGTHENING & REFURBISHMENT WORKS

Hardmead Bridge

LOCATION PLAN

DESCRIPTION OF WORKS:
Hardmead Bridge is located at A422, Newport Road, (MK16 9JR), over Chicheley Brook. The bridge
deck is simply supported on mass concrete abutments and comprises of two forms of construction. On
the south side, form of construction is steel troughing infilled with concrete. The north side, form is
reinforced concrete deck extension. The north side has failed the structural assessment and a new
reinforced concrete slab is being built to comply with current traffic loading.
The bridge has a single span of 3.70 metres and is 17.8 metres wide between masonry parapets.

This scheme forms part of Milton Keynes Council ongoing commitment to upgrading and improving the
bridge stock and road network.

Additional activities are being undertaken to upgrade the structure to ensure the bridges future integrity.
These are listed below:
 Installation of a new waterproofing system over the decks.
 Temporary supporting of Statutory Undertakers (apparatus) over the deck.
 Installation of a temporary safety barrier.
 Temporary widening the road to the north side.
 Installation of permanent inboard safety barriers.
 Removal and rebuilding of the north masonry parapet.
 Temporary damming of the watercourse to facilitate shot blasting and painting.
 Shot blasting and painting underside of the trough deck (South Side).
 Resurfacing of the carriageway.

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT
By employing traffic lights at the bridge site to carry out the works safely the traffic movement has been
restricted. This will have a knock-on effects to the surrounding road network and can increase journey
times causing localised congestion.
A temporary 30mph speed restriction has been introduced for safety reasons over the bridge site until the
completion of the works.
Additionally, Thames Valley Police & Hampshire Constabulary will be deploying one of their camera
operators in the vicinity of the site to act as a deterrent.
