1992: The Fab Five Scandal

The Fab Five of Michigan University was one of college basketball’s most entertaining team around the
early 1990s. The team had one of the best recruiting classes in recent memory which included Jalen
Rose, Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson. Four of them would suit up for the
NBA with Jimmy King the only one not playing in any games after his tenure at Michigan. The team won
many games under Michigan Coach Steve Fisher who won 56 games in the team’s 2 years together.
However, their legacy at Michigan would be tarnished forever due to the scandal that would eventually
rescind their wins as a team and their banner. The scandal revolved around Ed Martin who was giving
out money to players “illegally”, breaking the rules in the process. He developed relationships with the
players, giving them money for food or even high priced items such as a car. The NCAA took a deep look
into Michigan and eventually punished the program for their involvement in the situation. Their
punishments included rescinding wins in the 1992 and 1993 seasons, the removal of head coach Steve
Fisher,
2006: The Main Event, the Reggie Bush
Scandal

The Reggie Bush scandal took place in 2005 and 2006. Reggie Bush was having an amazing
season while playing football for USC. He even was awarded the Heisman trophy that year for
his season. However, Reggie Bush was caught receiving improper benefits while playing for USC
and even after. As a result, Reggie Bush forfeited his Heisman award and USC was given
punishment for the following years.
2008: The O.J Mayo improper benefit and
violation.

Around May 11, 2008, A former confidant of O.J Mayo named Louis
Johnson told sources that Mayo have received “illegal benefits”
before and after his tenure at USC. The person giving Mayo these
benefits was Rodney Guilroy. Guilroy was receiving money from Bill
Duffy Associates Sports Management (BDA) to give to Mayo as
“gifts” during his tenure at USC. The NCAA punished USC and Mayo
by vacating games from the 2007-2008 season ultimately making the
Men’s Basketball team 0-12 after the punishment.
2010: The A.J. Green Jersey Incident.

A.J. Green is a professional wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals in the NFL. He attended
college and played college football at Georgia University. However, at his time at Georgia, he
was suspended for four games because he sold his jersey for $1,000 from the previous year’s
Independence Bowl. According to the NCAA rules, athletes are not supposed to receive
“payment” off their name or talent during their time with the NCAA.
