DAILY PLAN
LessonTitle: Animal Masks Pt. 3 Grade Level: 1st grade

S & S Statements: This lesson is an extension to learning how to create a 3-D mask working from a
2-D design. The students will be given the freedom to choose different
colors of paint to incorporate into their paper plate and construction paper
animal masks.

Concepts and Skills:

Students will be able to work from their 2-D design to finish creating a 3-D mask portraying the visual
elements of a specific animal face. Students will make creative decisions about
what colors of paint they will use on their animal masks based on the animal
they are trying to portray. Students will carefully paint around their construction
paper shapes as to not cover up their previous work.

Vocabulary:

Purpose of Lesson (Overall Lesson Objective): Students will carefully finish a detailed animal mask
using geometric shapes cut out of construction paper and tempera paint while accurately incorporating
features from their chosen animal.

Objectives:
Given their 2-D designs, animal masks, and painting materials students will choose paint colors based
on their chosen animal to carefully apply paint to their animal masks. Students will be expected to use
their knowledge of their animal’s features to make an informed decision about the colors of paint they
use to complete their mask.

Assessment Criteria:
1. Successfully make informed decisions about paint colors being used according to animal
features.
2. Incorporate animal characteristics from their 2-D designs into their 3-D animal masks.
3. Careful use of paint as to not cover their construction paper work.

Teaching Resources Needed to Support the Lesson:

A PowerPoint presentation will be projecting images of both:
African masks; productive example of combining animal features with the human face

Physical examples of our own animal masks incorporating paint colors that were carefully chosen
according to our animal’s features.
