GAJAH MADA UNIVERSITY

Talk about the hottest university in Indonesia especially in middle Java is all about Gajah Mada
University. The most prestigious university which has established on 1949 has become the best state
university in Yogyakarta Province even in this country for so many years. The 360-acre university comprises
of 18 faculties, 68 undergraduate study programs, 23 diploma study programs, 104 master and specialist
study program, and 43 Doctorate study programs. It has approximately 55,000 students, 1,187 foreign
students and 2,500 faculty members currently. One of the most unique feature in this university is that
implementing an educopolis area, a step taken by universities in creating conductive environment for the
continuity of the learning process. These efforts are pursued in the context of developing multidisciplinary
collaborations and responding to ecological issues in order to achieve the vision of the university.

One of the biggest faculties in Gajah Mada University since it has been established is Faculties of
Engineering, and DTSL (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering) has existed since then. Civil
engineering is arguably the oldest engineering discipline. It deals with the built environment and can be
dated to the first time someone placed a roof over his head or laid a tree trunk across a river to make it
easier to get across. The built environment encompasses much of what defines modern civilization.
Buildings and bridges are often the first constructions that come to mind, as they are the most conspicuous
creations of structural engineering, one of civil engineering's major sub-disciplines. That’s why Civil
engineering is very important for transforming and developing sciences in engineer especially in our
environment and civilization. Civil engineering is an exciting profession because at the end of the day you
can see the results of your work, whether this is a completed bridge, a high-rise building, a subway station,
or a hydroelectric dam.

Civil and Environmental engineers work in a range of sectors, particularly the construction sector,
on buildings of all kinds, transport and communications infrastructure. This includes bridges, roads, tunnels,
canals and other large structures. They also work for employers involved in the production, storage and
distribution of electricity, gas and water. Civil engineers are employed by a range of contractors and
consultancies and also work in-house for a variety of national and multinational organizations. There are
many opportunities in the public sector, with local authorities, government departments and
environmental organizations, where engineers are often involved in setting project specifications and
drafting tender documents.
