THE GENERAL EPISTLE OF

BARNABAS
Bar nabas was a companion and fellow- pr eacher with Paul. This Epistle lays a gr eater claim to
canonical authority than most others. It has been cited by Clemens, Alexandrinus, Origen, Eu -
sebius, and Jer ome, and many ancient Fathers. Cotelerius af fir ms that Origen and Jer ome es -
teemed it genuine and canonical; but Cotelerius himself did not believe it to be either one or
the other; on the contrar y, he supposes it was written for the benefit of the Ebionites, (the
christianiz ed Jews,) who w er e tenacious of rites and cer emonies. Bishop Fell fear ed to own ex -
pr essly what he seemed to be persuaded of, that it ought to be tr eated with the same r espect as
several of the books of the pr esent canon. Dr. Ber nard, Sa vilian pr ofessor at Oxford, not only
believed it to be genuine, but that it was r ead thr oughout in the churches of Alexandria, as the
canonical Scriptur es wer e. Dodwell supposed it to ha ve been published befor e the Epistle of
Jude, and the writings of both the Johns. Vossius, Dupuis, Dr. Cane, Dr. Mill, Dr, S . Clark,
W hitson, and Archbishop Wake also esteemed it genuine: Menardus, Archbishop Land, Span -
heim, and others deemed it apocr yphal.
