Educational Philosophy

I believe that students learn best when the students get the opportunity to be hands on

with the curriculum. I believe this because students who get their hands on are likely to

understand better and have better chances of remembering what is being taught. Students also

have the opportunity of demonstrating their knowledge and skills to their peers. Hands on

experience will also give the students skills they can use to perform in other sports. This is

evidenced in my teaching by creating lessons that will involve having all participants engaged. I

will try creating a classroom in which all students are comfortable and will give them the

opportunity to learn new things each day. The lessons I will make will be lessons that each

student can relate to individually by learning about the different sports within each culture.

Professional Development Plan

Growing up I have established goals that I want to accomplish throughout my life as well

as in my career. Establishing goals for myself have helped me get to where I am today. Having

goals can help get to the big picture, which in my situation is becoming a Physical Education

teacher.

As of right now, one of my short term goals is to pass the New Mexico state tests to get

into the teaching program here at Eastern. After accomplishing that goal I plan on achieving

another short term goal which will be graduation from college. Following graduation my short

term goals are down the line of working in my career. I will apply for a teaching position back

home or in one of the surrounding towns. I want to go home in order to save money to achieve a

long term goal I have had for a while.

Long term goals are the following going to cosmetology school, moving to a bigger city,

and building a family. Those goals will be achieved with lots of hard work and dedication. While

achieving those goals I plan to work on the other small goals that will appear throughout my

career. Such as helping those that need my help as well as getting my student/athletes to be the

best they can be. I want to have be the best I can be and give back to everyone who has helped

me throughout my life.

Lesson Sequence
13

Introduction (estimated time) – a statement telling the learners what you will be doing and what you
expect them to be able to do or believe when you are finished

Physical activity is an important aspect to living a healthy life. During this lesson we will be talking about
the importance, benefits, and the things that might slow the progress downs. We will also be setting
goals which can be attainable.

Developmental Section – may be several pages long

Activity #1 (15)

Description: PowerPoint- I will provided the students with information as to why physical
activity is important, the benefits, and different kind of activities. I will also provide them with
information on how to set a goal. After the PowerPoint we will watch a video, giving more
information about the importance.

Activity #2 (10)

Description: Individually each student will get a goal sheet, where they will state small goals
they want to accomplish within the next month. Along with describing the goal they will list
ways to achieve the goal.

Activity #3 (10)

Description: Individually they will be given a poster board in which they will express what
physical activity means to them and what activities they would like to try. Also state how they
will show or give examples as to how they will get to their goal.

Closure (5) –

During this time we will go over the main points about physical activity. I will also answer any questions
that the students have during this time. Will also remind them about their project coming up and the
deadline.

Anticipated Problems/Safety Considerations/Adaptations

14

While giving the lesson, ones should be alert and aware of students who may feel uncomfortable with
the subject. Another thing that might be difficult for the students is setting a goal. The goal that will be
set does not necessarily have to be related to physical activity, it can go under personal health.

Assessment/Evaluation –

 Find a time to go over goals individually.

 Have them turn in the poster board which they complete, stating information about physical
activity.
 After a few weeks I will give back the poster board and goal sheet, so they can see how much
progress they have done.

Written Report
I got the opportunity to observe Ms. Iturralde teach at a Dual Language classroom at

Valencia Elementary here in Portales. The school is big with many halls, first time there I

actually got lost. The entrance is big, there is a big window to the right where the office is

located and to the left there is a door that leads to the gym/cafeteria. Straight ahead there is two

green double doors that lead to classrooms.

First thing I noticed when I walked into the classroom was that the room was small. The

tables the children sit in are really closed together not leaving enough room to walk around.

Another thing that caught my attention was the fact that the lockers are in the classroom. Last

time I saw that was when I worked at the primary school back home. Throughout the classroom I

saw vocabulary in both English and Spanish, an example was the math decimals. One thing I did

not see anywhere in the classroom was rules. I did hear the teacher mention a contract that she

had with the students a couple of times. Being in a Dual Language meant that there were students

in there who only knew Spanish and others who only knew English. Their parents placed them in

a classroom like this one so they could learn Spanish. I would like for my children to attend a

school that does has Dual Language classrooms.

16

While observing this classroom I saw many things I had never seen before such as the

class being taught in both languages. When I was in school we had to go to a different room for

bilingual help and they usually just worked on reading. On one of the days I was there they

worked on math all in Spanish and the next in English. Something that was surprising to me was

that they were both different lessons not the same one. During the course of the time I was there

the teacher read a book out loud to the students in Spanish, all the students were really engaged

in the book. This is when the young girl I observed was the most engaged, the reason for that

was that she only understands Spanish. When she is asked questions in English she has the help

of other students, they translate for her making it easier for her. During my last observations I

overheard students talking about texting each other and who had a Facebook. When I was in

fourth grade that was definitely the last thing I was thinking about.

I chose to observe a small light brown headed girl, I choose her for the reason that she

reminded me of myself when I went to a school and did not understand the language. The young

girl is the smallest out of all the students in class, she is in the process of learning English. When

the lessons were in Spanish she was alert and paying attention, while if the lesson was in English

she would easily get distracted. Each time I saw here she always had a big smile on her face,

which to me showed she liked what she was doing and enjoyed school. When I interviewed her

she was not shy at all, she was ready for me to ask her all the questions. Before coming to school

here in Portales she attended school in Delicias, Chihuahua. She described her school in Mexico,

as a small school with only one classroom for all grade levels. With a big smiled she answered

one of my questions by saying, “The specials.” That is what she likes best about the school she

now attends. When I asked about her family she did not say much besides the fact that she has
17

two older siblings. One of the things that impressed be about her was the fact that she is not

afraid to make mistakes when trying to translate sentences out load.

I also got the chance to interview Ms. Iturralde, everything she told me during my

observations I plan on using in my own classroom. She decided to become a Bilingual teacher

after she saw her peers going to bilingual classes, she saw them struggle. Noticed that there was

not much programs to meet their needs, she wanted those students to have the same opportunities

as everyone else. When I asked her to tell me about the students I observed, she pointed out the

fact that this was her first year in a school in the United States. She has been doing this for 23

years, and you can tell that she enjoys and loves what she does. “Good teaching,” is the advice

she gave me when I asked her how I can help English learners be successful.

During the time I spent in the classroom I saw things that I could potentially use in my

classroom if I have Bilingual students. Just like Ms. Iturralde did, giving the students the option

of writing in their diary in either Spanish or English. I have also been thinking about perhaps

making my minor Spanish. That would help me, help those who struggle just as she does in her

classroom.

Communication Investigation

Eastern New Mexico University

Communication Investigation

I had never thought about how much communication played a big role between parents

and teachers. When assigned this assignment, I had no idea where to begin or interview first.

Each student had to interview a total of six people, three parents and three teachers. I began by

interviewing the following parents, Daisy Delgadillo, Elaine Tapia and Bertha Adame. Once I

had them done, I interviewed the teachers Coach Coleman, Mrs. Aragon and Mrs. Barnett. Each

person had their own view of things and listening to all the different answers was great.

I decided to interview three parents with students in different grade levels. In order, get

different perspectives. I began by interviewing Daisy Delgadillo a parent of a fourth and second

grader. Then I interviewed Elaine Tapia parent of a college student and sophomore. Finally yet

importantly, I interviewed Bertha Adame, my mother, parent of college student and a senior.

Since all three of my interviewees had two children in school I made sure each one was focused

on one child. I asked each parent a set of six questions from the bank of questions provided to us

in class. Question 6, “How do you communicate with your child’s teacher?” was one of the

questions in which all three parents had a common answer. All three responded with, “face to

face,” making the communication between them two way. I also noticed that the younger the

child the more technology being used by the teacher. One said she would get text reminders

when important things would be coming up such as picture day. When asked, if improvement
20

needed to be done each parent had something different. Daisy said, “No improvement needed.”

Elaine had to think about her response and said, “More availability on teacher’s part.” Bertha

quickly responded, “From my part asking more questions.” While I interviewed each parent I

also noticed that the younger the child is, the more communication there is between the teacher

and parent. I would think the communication between them would slowly stop because the

teacher expects the student to inform their parents a lot more.

When it came time to interview the teachers I chose a teacher from different grade levels.

I also decided that interviewing a coach would be a good idea since that is what I want to

become. I interviewed Mrs. Aragon she is a first grade teacher. Mrs. Barnett a high school

Spanish teacher. Both Mrs. Aragon and Mrs. Barnett teach in Friona, TX. Mr. Coleman Eastern

New Mexico University track and field coach. As well as with the parent interviews I asked each

teacher/coach a set of six questions. All three teachers answered that face-to-face communication

was the most effective way to communicate with the parents. The following question was my

favorite; do you believe that communication is important in forming parent/teacher relationship?

I liked this question because each time I asked each teacher began his or her response with a big

smile. Also showed that the teachers cared for the students and wanted the same as their parents,

to see the student succeed. Communication will not be always easy because different barriers can

get in the way. A common answer amongst them was that parents at times could be the barrier,

parents who do not listen or do not seem to care. Question 15 is something I want to remember

when I become a teacher/coach, what advice would you offer to a new teacher about parent

communications. Mrs. Aragon responded with, “Be patient and always continue to

communicate.” Coach Coleman said, “Honestly do your part, communicate with them as much

as possible.” Mrs. Barnett with a serious face replied, “Parent communication can be tough,
21

never quit trying.” After those responses, I could not help but think that parent communication is

something I would have to encounter and would not be easy at all.

I learned a lot from both parents and teachers during this interview, I am glad I had the

opportunity to interview each person. Not each teacher communicates the same way; it will take

time to find the best way to communicate. In all six interviews face-to-face seemed to be the

most effective, meaning that two-way communication would be best to use. I am looking

forward to the parents I will interact with and the way we will communicate.
