4-2 Leadership, Participation, and Collaboration

The candidate seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility
for student learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school
professionals, support staff, and community members to ensure learner growth, and to
advance the profession.

Throughout both student teaching and college, I have sought out opportunities to

seek leadership roles to help in the daily function of the school and program outside of

daily rehearsals. During my time at K-State I collaborated with a community Catholic

School to have a mock solo and ensemble festival for their middle schoolers. I created the

event myself from the ground up, and now it’s an annual occurrence at K-State. The festival

gave the opportunity for these middle schoolers to play their solo or small ensemble and

receive a rating and comments before their actual festival.

At my elementary school, I helped often with hallway supervision before school.

Twice a week, I assisted in supervising the kindergarten hallway before they were let into

their rooms. While walking the hall way, asking students to make sure they’re sitting, I got

to interact with students outside the classroom. I got to talk to them about their basketball

practice last night, or what they had for breakfast. Getting to know the students outside

class drastically impacted the connectedness we felt in class.

During my time at the high school, the leadership roles I got to take on were given to

me in preparation of becoming a director of bands. The band traveled to East High School

to perform in State Large Group Festival, and I was in charge of supervising my own bus.

Something that seems so easy actually made me very nervous to do just because I’ve

always had my CT with me. Other leadership opportunities included coaching a flute trio

for solo and small ensemble festival. The girls asked me if I would help them, and I was

more than thrilled to. I facilitated their rehearsals and allowed them to make their own
musical decisions and talk things out before I offered my suggestions. My goal with this

group was to allow the independence to make their own choices as an ensemble with my

assistance to lead them in the right direction. The group received a I at regionals and a II at

state.
