PGP – ABM (Special Form)

1. Exposure to rural area: Years Month

2. Nature of exposure to rural areas;(Specify whether it was your normal place of stay or
you were in connection with some duties/responsibility

I am working in NTPC Ltd at Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh. Area is rural with local economy
mostly dependent and coal and power generation. For new plant, I was associated with land
acquisition of nearby villages. Villagers were dependent on farming as only source of income, however
did not have any modern technology or awareness of government program. But Madhya Pradesh is
the leading district in organic farming. Farmers with only experience could sustain and those with
knowledge and latest technology could earn profit from agriculture. This arose my interest in
agriculture field.

3.Is/are your parents' occupation(s) anyway related to agriculture and allied

sector? Yes No

My grandfathers were directly link to agriculture. However currently my close uncles are engaged in
agriculture as primary source of income in my native village.

4.Please provide reasons (in descending order of importance) for your motivation and
interests for applying to this specialized programme (PGP-ABM)

a) Agriculture as profession - After graduating from renowned university and working in Maharatna
PSU, I have fulfilled all my basic needs of food, clothing and shelter. Beyond this when I look towards
society where I must contribute for its development are education, food, medicine, infrastructure. I
find myself inclined towards food sector. (agriculture). At post graduate level PGP-ABM would provide
me required platform for agriculture sector.

b) Selection of sector – In agriculture area such as farming, transportation, storage, post processing
needs to be revamped for better results. By joining PGP-ABM, I would get knowledge of each sector
and then could decide in which sector to venture in agriculture.

c) Future sector in demand will be agriculture – Currently digitalization is a sector which is witnessing
huge growth and providing vast opportunities. To feed this growing economy and population,
agriculture sector is not growing with same pace. This in future would create demand of professional
from agriculture field. PGP-ABM is the right course to meet the demand of future predicted in
agriculture.

d) Development of Jharkhand – Jharkhand is mineral state however 50% land is available for
cultivation but not use for agriculture due to water shortage. Further rice is grown most which signifies
that farmers are not aware of crops that could be grown in Jharkhand which are vegetables and
horticulture. PGP-ABM would provide knowledge and time to plan how I could contribute to
Jharkhand agriculture growth.

e) Agriculture as Manufacturing sector – Today agriculture is treated for those who are weak in
studies. Further it has been noticed that cultivator looks after every aspect from planning to selling of
crop to grown. So if each part of agriculture is divided into parts and specific group perform that task,
this would increase efficiency and reduce burden on one person. PGP-ABM would provide vision
required for management and planning of agriculture as manufacturing sector.

5. What are the constraints and possible solutions for the development of agribusiness
sector in India?

a) Constraint: Lack of modern technology/machineries

Solution: Cultivators due to lack of funds could not access to modern technology. Private players or
government should set up small groups and provide technology/machineries which would after
training would provide their services on chargeable basis to cultivators. This would reduce burden and
open new opportunities in services field of agriculture.

b) Constraint: Sale of crops in market.

Solution: Cultivators are always in suspense regarding sale of crop. So government should fix rate of
each crop and ensure that it is not sold below that price. This would ensure minimum fixed sale per
unit and accordingly plan how much to invest so that to earn profit.

c) Constraint: Linking with post processing sector

Solution: Crops grown have specific self-life and due to this a substantial percentage is could not sold
after that. Sale of crop in market and then to processing sector need to be changed. Private players
must set up small preliminary post processing units in villages as per soil condition and what they
produce. This would encourage to grow specific crop and reduce transit time.

d) Constraint: Land profiling for specific crop

Solution: Corporate farming is not successful in India due to mind-set of loss of land. Hence
government as per records must demarcate certain land for specific crop similar to SEZ. In this area
which could be called specific agriculture crop government would provide subsidy on inputs required,
post processing unit by private players and output must be exported.

e) Constraint: Effective use of available resources like water and soil

Solution: Use of drip irrigation to be promoted by providing preferential sale of crop of cultivator who
uses it. Also group farming i.e. sowing of same kind of seed by each cultivator must be promoted and
