Dear Dr. Leslie Bruce,

When first entering this class I had set a goal for this semester, to improve my proficiency in
writing so it was more professional and put together. This was mainly conducted through
prewriting techniques learned throughout all that we have done this semester; from the rhetorical
triangle, introductory discussion, ethics activities, definition assignment, design principles,
review article, presentations and many other assignments, I have learned an abundance on how to
properly use the 6 SLO’s (student learning outcomes). This letter is to be used as a guide to
navigate through all that will be said, what has been learned, and what was improved upon.
The first item chosen to be added to the portfolio was the Rhetorical triangle, this was done in
order to write a definition essay. The rhetorical triangle was used to support claims that were to
be used in the essay. It helped peace ideas into actual concepts. This allowed for us to understand
how to write so people understood who and what we were writing about. Therefore, allowing us
to get in the heads of the audience, to be able to properly know what type of language and style
should be used. Thus, allowing the first SLO’s to be addressed, which was SLO1 and 5, the
rhetorical awareness. While it may not seem so, persuasion (SLO3) was used in order to attempt
to convince the editor of this book to choose my definition. While this was not the actual
definition assignment, it was the first step to understanding that this is what needed to be done.
This assignment required the understanding of how to properly use the organizational skills
(SLO 4) that showed the ideas provided in front of you in a clear, precise manner. Notice how
the boxes are neatly made with the phrasing never leaving the box.
The next selected item was the rhetorical function of citations. Where collaboration took place
(SLO 6) between the group where ethical research (SLO 2) took place. The group came together,
analyzed the articles found and picked out the citation functions. Then examples from each
article were chosen to be used in the assignment. (SLO 3 and 4)
The last and final assignment added was the annotated bibliography. This is the kind of
assignment that allowed for the demonstration of my understanding of language and design
(SLO 5) to show what I thought I knew then into what I have learned thus far. This
assignment allowed for the use of rhetorical awareness, persuasion, organization, and
collaboration (SLO 1, 3, 4, and 6) through all that was originally conducted in the paper to
what is now depicted.

Sincerely,

Katelin Delzeith
