Goal: Strengthen student understanding of the order of operations using a hands-on activity.

LESSON NAME: Order of Operations Week 2

Procedure Time
I: Introduce Lesson 2 minutes

1. Students will be reviewing concepts of


using order of operations to evaluate
and solve numerical expressions.
2. Students will play a math game using
order of operations.
3. Students will complete a worksheet to
test for understanding after the game is
completed.

II: Review 5 minutes

1. Review the concept of PEMDAS


(Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally).
o Ask students to help you
identify the meaning of each
letter.
P: Parentheses
E: Exponents
M: Multiplication
D: Division
A: Addition
S: Subtraction
2. Complete an order of operations
problem with students.
o Problem: 3 × 7 + (12 - 2) = 31
o Encourage student participation
by asking them to help solve the
problem.

III: Introduce Game 3 minutes

1. Split students into groups of 2-3


2. Each group will be given manipulatives
that include: 3-7-12-2 number strip &
game pieces (operations & parentheses)
3. Explain the game to students
o Teacher will give students the
answer to an order of operations
problem on the board.
o Students will place the game
pieces on the number strips to
make equation that equals the
answer.
o Students will be given a hint for
each problem.

IV: Play the Game 5 minutes

1. Answer: 60
2. Problem: (3 + 7) × 12 ÷ 2
3. Hint: The problem includes
parentheses.

V: Worksheet Assignment 15 minutes

1. Students will be asked to complete a


worksheet on the order of operations to
check for understanding for the
remainder of class time.
