Value of Using Primary Sources

Primary sources are firsthand account of an event that are produced at the time of the

event takes place. Documents, diaries, artifacts, paintings, photographs, maps, films,

manuscripts, an autobiography, recordings, court testimony, laws, newspapers, memoirs

correspondence or any other source of firsthand information are considered as primary sources.

Primary sources interpret the past in different angle. They are very helpful to make a final

conclusion for researchers. Primary sources provide an access to the record of historical, artistic,

social, scientific and political thought and achievement during the specific period under study.

Primary sources help to narrate a personal way to events of the past and promote a greater

understanding of history. They encourage to seek additional evidence through research. They

make history more real and promote active reading and response. Primary sources help to

achieve critical and analytical knowledge of history because they are based on real observations

and facts. They help to construct knowledge as they form reasoned conclusions. They are helpful

for compare what someone learn from research with what he/she already know.
