Forum 3

The forum on Thursday February 15th was a presentation about S.A.R.A which stands

for Sexual Assault Response Advocates. The presentation was to inform students about consent

versus non consent and when a student is drunk they cannot consent to any sexual activities.

After introducing themselves they showed a short film about consenting to a kiss from the

opposite sex. The program director for S.A.R.A asked the audience about statistics on sexual

assaults on campus which was 1 out of 3 whole and she also posed the question, “Do you think

men get sexual assaulted too?” The statistic for men was 1 out of 6 which shocked the audience.

The students passed out brochures and papers with numbers the students can call in order to get

help if they are sexually assaulted.

The members of S.A.R.A said that they can provide them with assistance if they need

help and the information will remain confidential without the parent’s knowledge. S.A.R.A

assured the audience that the victims would be well taken care of and provided sexual assault

counseling if they want it. Towards the end of the presentation, the members instructed us to go

to their Instagram page and take the quiz to see if we were paying attention. I received a 100%

quiz and the average for the quiz was around 80%. The director also asked us to look out for

each other when we are at parties both on and off campus. The director urged us to be safe and

treat the other students as your family because if a bystander steps in they could potentially help

that person. The director provided a scenario saying, “If you see a girl being choked and
smacked around, are you going to help? I said no because if the guy is bold enough to smack her

in public then what makes you think he’s not going to hit me too. I will call someone to help her

but I am not going to try to be a hero and put myself at risk
